With Bruschi out this season and Ted Johnson now having retired, does this situation now lend itself to Beisel and/or Chad Brown being viable ILB starters?I don't know enough about either, but was hoping some people who know could chime in.
Chad Brown is virtually a lock to start on the inside. Beisel may face some competition from Vrabel (if he's moved from OLB) or maybe even Pfifer (if he doesn't retire).
The boston Globe reported this morning that Vrabel got a lot of snaps at ILB yesterday. Pfifer's locker is still intact in the locker room - I believe he will be back.
I'm not disagreeing with you, but can you tell me why you think this? I always had Brown down as an outside guy with pass-rush skills going back to his days in Pittsburgh.

I believe Brown will be playing ILB for the following reasons:1.) Three ILB's have retired or semi-retired (Bruschi, Johnson, Pfifer).
2.) Klecko has...again...been moved. He's no longer practicing as an ILB.
3.) Colvin, McGinest, and Banta-Cain have absolutely no experience playing ILB.
4.) Brown practiced ILB in mini-camps and is currently playing ILB in training camp.
5.) Brown has experience playing every LB position.
To further elaborate on #5, I attached a link from an interview from a few months ago. In the interview, Brown is explaining his ability and, more importantly, his willingness to play any position necessary for his team to win.
"... (I have) played every LB spot possible and in every single defense I had, I had eight different defensive coordinators in 12 years. So, I doubt that there isn't anything they'd throw at me that I couldn't play."
Who ever ends up inside, will have some value. Brown may very well be the best candidate, but way to early to tell. My main concern with Brown is his health, he has had a difficult time staying on the field.
Count on Chad Brown to be the benefactor of Johnson's retirement. That being said, I think the the Pats will play their LBs all over the place and may confuse fantasy owners (as well as opposing teams). Nobody on the team will reproduce Bruschi's stats from last season. I think that Brown and Vrabel both have good LB3 value.
Patriots | C. Brown, Vrabel Taking Reps at ILBMon, 1 Aug 2005 21:21:13 -0700Andy Hart, of Patriots Football Weekly, reports New England Patriots LBs Chad Brown and Mike Vrabel took the first-team reps at the inside linebacker positions Monday, Aug. 1.
Has Beisel even practiced since last Friday? He "tightened up" after the first day and has been held out since, IIRC. Every day he sits makes Vrabel look a little better. Which makes sense since I picked Beisel up on waivers this spring.

-- Patriots LB Update --Tue Aug 2, 2005 --from FFMastermind.comThe New England Patriots' official website reports that with Patriots OLB Willie McGinest and ILB Chad Brown sitting out Tuesday morning's practice, Mike Vrabel and Monty Beisel worked with the ones at inside linebacker with Tully Banta-Cain and Rosevelt Colvin at outside linebacker. The second team linebackers were Matt Chatham and Wesly Mallard inside and Andre Torrey and Grant Steen outside.
