Patriots Release Gabriel (1 Viewer)

RC94,

try again-

Clayton said they cut Gabriel for a DT or TE replacement. NFL official transactions show it was for a DB.

(Like I originally replied) maybe later in the week they'll sign one but apparently it wasn't for Gabriel's spot. Who do you have them cutting then?

BTW Gus Scott only lasted 6 days with Mangini, for all we know they cut the same guy but....

Jabar Gaffney's been quietly stepping up over the past few weeks
There's a phrase I thought I'd never hear. BTW, Gaffney was my 18th-round draft pick.......in 2002.
Gaffney was good a few weeks back when Gabriel fumbled. IIRC He had about 60 yards in a half that week. He started the next week but only had a catch or two. He didn't do much since but Brady didn't exactly give the WRs much chance to do so last week.

First of all, "try again"???? Why??? I don't care that much about this. All I did was quote what I saw Clayton, a respected national sports writer, write about it. I really don't care about the name of the practice squad player they signed or if he was a TE, DT or DB. Why do you care so much about this to do all this research? Some people around here really need to get a life. :goodposting:

Wow. The Raiders better be on the horn right NOW with his agent!!That was their worst move of the year.
Wow.And I thought hiring the coaching staff they did was..........my :2cents: Gabriel had to have done something that directly affected a game. Getting the boot means you can't be trusted.Home movies anyone? Dolphins? Thats just speculation, but........... :boxing:

Dude yesterday had a thread saying NE would make a surprise move today.

I think his name was something like GreekGeek?

Maybe he can shed some light on this.

He's a decent backup receiver and NE will be in the playoffs. I can see someone picking him up just for the information.

Hey Bri, why don't you read your own post? The Patriots still have the open spot on the active roster that was created by the release of Gabriel. Scott and Phinisee were signed to the practice squad. Thus, it is possible that they could fill a hole at DT, TE, or DB with that open roster slot.

John Clayton has speculated that it could be DT Santonio Thomas, depending on Wilfork's injury status. However, if Wilfork looks better, tthen it could just as well mean that Guss Scott will be joining the team.

Gabriel would be a nice addition as the #3 WR in Green Bay. They would still need to add a WR next year, but that would make them a little less desperate.

NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS-Released WR Doug Gabriel. Signed DB Justin Phinisee and S Guss Scott to the practice squad. Released CB James Patrick from the practice squad.
Did you read the part of the link that pertains to Gabriel? Here is what he says:The Patriots released wide receiver Doug Gabriel because you sense they are worried about the injuries of tight end Ben Watson and defensive tackle Vince Wilfolk. Though the team isn't saying, both players could miss a couple of weeks. Needing the roster space to bring players off the practice squad, the Patriots cut Gabriel.
Clayton's speculating. Facts are that they signed Gus Scott and Phinisee. He mentions they need roster space to bring players off the practice squad but they just filled up a roster spot with Scott.
Read it again -- they signed Scott to the practice squad, not to the roster from the practice squad. Patriots.com confirms.

How many players are here?http://www.patriots.com/team/index.cfm?ac=...s&Print=yes

• Eligibility: Only players under contract on the 53-man active roster, which is cut to 45 (plus a third quarterback) 90 minutes before kickoff on game day, can play.
Did they cut Gabriel to sign a DT or would they have to cut another to sign a DT?

Do they?http://www.patriots.com/team/index.cfm?ac=...s&Print=yes

Scott and Phinisee were signed to the practice squad.
I realize that the two were but as I mentioned earlier I'm not sure if Scott is eligible. It HAS happenned before that a team has mistaken whether a player is eligible for it or not. PS is players under 2 years in the NFL. Scott has 3.

One year he sat due to injury. That would probably be acceptable as 2 instead of 3 seasons.

He's been a starter with both the Texans and the Pats and...that whole accrued seasons thing.

Regardless, he'd cause another cut if he weren't eligible.

I was going by the News page -- roster pages are not usually updated with any regularity.

BTW, I don't think a season on the IR counts as playing time for PS purposes, so I doubt that the news articles are all mistaken.

so I doubt that the news articles are all mistaken.
they're notthe Pats sign him and submit that contract to the NFL. (what they reported)NFL then barksthen they either sign him to active roster or say "see ya"If it's "off" it usually takes a day to find outIn the transaction log ya just usually see signed to PS one day and signed to actvie roster the next.

Pats keep making moves

They moved Pass to IR

signed OJ Santiago and G/C Gene Mu-jkdfgkfhgkf-ski

TE Rod Trafford was also signed to PS.

Looking at their current WR unit isn't pretty. Jax maybe done for the year. That leaves Caldwell who's solid but in over his head as a #1. Troy is Troy. After that you have a very mediocre Jabar Gaffney. To be cutting Gabriel right now says whatever they don't like about him is pretty bad because they're basically saying they'd rather have a street free agent than him because that's about their only option right about now (outside of Bam Childress). Also, if Jax is done and they get an injury to Caldwell or Troy you're talking about going into the playoffs with about as bad a WR unit as you could possibly have.
They signed WR Kelvin Kight last week as they go for an all Florida receiving corps.I believe he was in Minny and GB this summer.

Sounds to me like they're running out of active players to put as Questionable on the injury report.
