Patriots WR's - Brandon Tate vs. Taylor Price (1 Viewer)

What's the take on these guys? Tate is obviously very talented and great in the return game, but the Pats drafted Taylor Price in the 3rd (high for them to take a WR). Price was the second fastest WR at the combine but lacks the return skills of Tate and didn't put up great numbers in college (mainly blamed on poor QB'ing). Does this signal that Pats think Price is more in line for a starting job than Tate who is a huge asset on returns?

I don't think it means anything.

you don't roll into camp with one guy at each position and then draft another one when that guy leaves.

you fill your roster with depth at all positions so you've got guys to cover for injuries, but more importantly you've got guys in the pipeline to develop for tomorrow.

welker is hurt, and you're looking at moss and holt --- another young wr isn't such a bad idea.

I don't think they draft rookie wr's looking for starters.

A healthy Tate "should" be more talented than Price. Tate was thought of as first round potential before the injury and drug test. He's also had a year in the system that should give him a leg up in being mentally ready for camp.

Tate was a 3rd round pick last year I believe, so there's no reason to think Price is going to jump ahead of Tate just because he's a 3rd rounder. However, I will be interested to see how they get used. Factor in the addition of Gronk and Hernandez, and there are now several mouths to feed. Once Welker comes back...there may only be room for one of Price and Tate next season. I do think the two of them will be competing directly with each other, and the loser may end up with a lot of bench time.

I tend to agree but I had read rumors that the reason Tate was put on IR late last year was because he had trouble learning the plays. Granted, it's a complicated system so it does take time to learn for a rookie.

Just a guess but I'd say Price was selected with the departure of Moss next season in mind. Tate and Aiken know the system and both are strong special teams players so I'd think they have a huge advantage on making the active roster next year. Edelman figures to take the Welker role while Moss does his thing. I believe this will leave Holt and Price fighting for the last active roster spot. Price will make the team but if Holt shows anything I see Price maybe not being active most weeks. If they like what they see from Price in terms of playing right now I think they release Holt. Even if Holt can hold off price he might not be able to make the return of Welker. See a Joey Galloway type ending for Holt.

If I had to guess I would predict the 53 would open with

Moss

Holt

Edelman

Tate

Price

Patten

Welker (PUP)

Aiken and Stanback Cut

Crumpler

Gronkowski

Hernandez

9 rostered WR/TE likely spells the end for at least one RB (Morris-BJGE)

I don't think anyone can begin to guess what the deal with these two are until camp is well under way...they are unknown quanties as far as the NFL is concerned. They both obviously have physical skills...enough to both be drafted in the third round. Yet, right now Tate has been damaged goods to date and you never know what you have (good or bad) with a small school guy like Price.

The other thing is Brady and the Patriot system in general. You never really know what guys click in this system until they get here. Donald Hayes, Doug Gabriel and Joey Galloway were all seasoned vets and were absolutely clueless with the Pats O. Chad Jackson was a freakish athletic talent the Pats traded up for and he was nothing but luggage with the Pats. On the flipside David Givens and Julian Edelman were seventh rounders who fit in seamlessly...Givens was a very productive starter on a Super Bowl team and Edelman looks like he's on the verge of a productive careeer. Jabar Gaffney was a street free agent and he showed up in Foxboro and fit right in.

One thing is for sure with these two...if Brady does not trust them they will not have a chance to contribute. That means these two need to be more than talented...they need to be hard-workers who know where they are supposed to be on every play. To guess where either fits in is a pure mystery because you're just not gonna know until we see how they look in camp and whether #12 is comfortable with them.

Very good chance the Pats are starting Tate AND Price on the outside to open 2011, the job is Tate's to lose for 2010.

Aiken was never signed to be a relevant part of the WR corp. He is a Special Teamer through and through and a captain of the squad; I doubt he is cut.

I don't see how they keep Patten for more than training camp. And I also think Moss will be back if he performs well this season. As for Price and Tate, neither one of them has even had a training camp for evaluation purposes, so I don't think one is considered better than the other internally.

I agree. It all depends on how well he plays and doesn't show lapses in effort like he did last year, but the team also need to sign Brady who I believe wouldn't be happy if the team decides to let Moss walk.

 If Moss puts up a Moss year then he will be with the Pats in 2011. Patten will likely not make the team. The Pats most likely will keep 6 WR's.Welker will start on PUP and depending on whether anyone gets hurt I could see Holt getting cut late in the year. Moss, Edelman, Welker, Tate and Price will be the mainstays once Welker returns. Sam Aiken will be on the team as a STer.
