Pats talking with Stallworth... (1 Viewer)

This is somewhat of a surprise coming on the heels of the Welker offer. Yet, it does mesh with my thoughts that the Pats know that with Brady turning 30 this year they probably have a five year window where they have an excellent opportunity to win more championships. They have made some very tough decisions the past few years which have put them in a position to be big players in free agency and the draft this year. As a Pats fan this is real exciting stuff.

hm. i actually wouldn't be crazy about this signing. all depends on the $ of course, but he wasn't a guy i was pulling for them to go after.

I have a feeling Stallworth isn't going anywhere this FA signing period. He will probably wait for a team that didn't get a wr in the draft, and still has money to spend.

That's pretty much what happened with Plaxico.

Where are the Pats finding this cash.
Well... they didnt sign Givens. Got rid Branch. Cut ways with Dillon. And Let Graham walk away. That leaves Brady getting paid on offense. Damn near everyone else is on a rookie contract still (sans MLight or KFaulk) or a low-money barely moderate player. Which is how the extra room came about to sign some players. Most of what cap they used is on defense.

The Pats were millions of dollars under the cap last year and through creative accounting restructured contracts to go against last year's cap number. So they started this calendar year $30+ million under the cap--and that's before they cut Dillon.

There's a report in the Philly papers that Stallworth might already have his first strike in the substance program:

Stallworth in NFL substance programThe status, reported by league sources with no details, could become costly baggage on the free-agent market.By Bob BrookoverInquirer Staff WriterDonté Stallworth, the Eagles' free-agent receiver, brought some baggage with him when he hit the NFL's open market Friday.According to league sources, Stallworth is a participant in the NFL's substance-abuse program, which could subject him to a league suspension if he were to violate the terms of the program again. The circumstances and time frame that led to Stallworth's admittance to the program have not been disclosed, and the receiver's agent, Drew Rosenhaus, did not return phone calls last night.NFL players can enter the substance-abuse program in a variety of ways, including voluntarily. Players also can be entered in the program for failing drug tests or for drug- and alcohol-related law violations away from the field, according to the collective-bargaining agreement. An Eagles spokesman said last night that the team had no comment, citing the confidentiality rules that are in place regarding the league's substance-abuse program. According to the NFL Players Association's Web site, a breach of confidentiality can be subject to fines ranging from $10,000 to $500,000.The Web site, quoting the collective-bargaining agreement, said that teams interested in signing a player via free agency are entitled to know whether a player is subject to a suspension the next time he fails to comply with any terms of the NFL's intervention program.Stallworth, of course, is trying to land the best deal he can as an unrestricted free agent after spending last season as the Eagles' top speed receiver following a trade from the New Orleans Saints. He has said numerous times that he'd love to rejoin the Eagles, but there were no negotiations between the team and Rosenhaus before the free-agent period started Friday. As of last night, there were no reports of Stallworth's visiting another NFL team, a ritual for free agents when the market opens. That doesn't mean interest in Stallworth's services is nonexistent, but it could mean that Rosenhaus' initial asking price might be considered too expensive, especially if the receiver is in a position in which he could be suspended if he violates the league's intervention program.Stallworth was a well-liked player in the Eagles' locker room who made some major contributions, particularly in the two postseason games when he caught six passes for 141 yards and two touchdowns. During the regular season, he caught 38 passes for 725 yards and five touchdowns. He also missed four games with a hamstring injury, but those were the first games he missed because of injury in the last three seasons. The Eagles have said that they would like to have Stallworth back, but they do not want to overpay for his services. The belief within the organization has been that Stallworth would probably get a lucrative contract from another NFL team."Obviously, we never want to overpay for players, but I think there's a common ground you can come to and you can say you're willing to go this high," Eagles general manager Tom Heckert said before the start of free agency. "But after that, you have to have your options open and move on if you think it's just too out of the price range."Because Stallworth hit the free-agent market, the Eagles only have to surrender a fourth-round pick to the Saints as part of the trade the teams made shortly before the start of the 2006 season. Had Stallworth signed with the Eagles before the start of free agency, the team would have had to relinquish a third-round pick. The trade also sent linebacker Mark Simoneau to the Saints.Stallworth, 26, is one of seven Eagles still on the free-agent market. The others are Rod Hood, Correll Buckhalter, Will James, Shawn Barber, Reno Mahe and Koy Detmer. According to league sources, Hood has a visit scheduled this week with the Cleveland Browns, and Buckhalter is scheduled to visit the Denver Broncos. The Eagles have not announced any scheduled visits by free agents to the NovaCare Complex.Contact staff writer Bob Brookover at 215-854-2577 or bbrookover@phillynews.com.

I dont think the money would be worth the 9 or 10 games he plays in
Stallworth has played in 85% of the games he could have played in over his career. That's close to 14 games per season on average. He's never missed more than 5 games.Compare that to Deion Branch who played in 82% of the regular season games in his 4 years with the Patriots.

Just a FYI, this reporter is talking out of his ###.

Stallworth has had a grand total of ZERO face to face meetings with teams thus far. This is purely Rosenhaus trying to stir up a market for Stallworth by 'leaking' rumors.

the hamstring problems make me a little nervous. I think he's a hard guy to count on. Also how many of those games did he play in and get hurt, or play in at less than 100% because of those hamstring issues? Just my opinion of him. I wouldnt want to sign him to the contract I think he will get

Basically, we have a reporter saying he is talking with New England.Do you have a link to a reporter saying he is NOT talking with New England ?Because, if you don't , I'm going to have to go with WHDH on this one. :lmao:

I guess you've got nothing, just as I thought.

Stallworth dynasty owners should be holding their breath and pray that the Eagles resign him. McNabb & Stallworth looked very potent before Donovan went down. The Eagles have the offensive weapons to allow Stallworth to get single coverage. From a fantasy perspective, I would hate to see him go to the Pats.

Check the Eagles threads the past few years. I think you'll find I know a good bit about the team. As to where I get my info, well, just be happy I get it....

 Stallworth's got loads of talent ... but you gotta think Mickey Loomis and Sean Payton are wiping their brows in relief about how well the Stallworth release is going to end up for them.

Maybe Bill Belichick is visiting Stallworth in rehab; he has the sideline wardrobe to fit right in there...

Id

:bye: Pats WR's = :X :hangover:

Apparently, Stallworth is in Foxborough tonight meeting with the Patriots, per Schefter.

He says that it's down to the Eagles and the Pats.

Shefter has been very impressive this offseason. With the Pats being active he's been on local radio a few times and has been dead on. He doesn't take himself too seriously either which makes him fun to listen to.

If the Pats get Stallworth, they'd all of a sudden become VERY deep at WR.

Stallworth

Welker

Caldwell

Gaffney

That's a nice stable of wideouts right there. Certainly a major upgrade over last year. And they could afford to bring Chad Jackson along slowly from the knee injury.

The Pats get Wlker and Gaffney and Caldwell were actually doing pretty good at the end of the season. This will surprise me if they sign him. I hope he resignes with the Eagles where his value will be worth the most.

Stallworth will be meeting with Patriots brass today,

per WEEI.

I'm looking forward to an afternoon signing.

How often do you hear reports of players/agents not talking with teams?

Word is Eagles formally made an offer to Stallworth. I hope he resigns with them so New Orleans gets a third
Since the Eagles didn't sign him before FA, they only owe a 4th even if they resign him now.

Stallworth only has the greater value with the Eagles if McNabb stays healthy and probably if Westbrook stays healthy as well to keep defenses honest. The Eagles are truly a snakebitten team who I don't trust anymore to stay healthy. Furthermore, Stallworth has not proven he can stay healthy himself for the Saints or the Eagles. Perhaps his injury fortunes would change with a different team.
