An option?:

Georgia cornerback Paul Oliver will be one of the top players available in July's supplemental draft, and he's someone the Titans might consider.

Oliver, who would have been a fifth-year senior, did not meet NCAA academic-eligibility requirements for the 2007 season. He started every game for the Bulldogs last season, and limited Georgia Tech's Calvin Johnson, the No. 2 pick in the NFL draft, to just 2 catches for 13 yards.

Oliver was projected to be a late-second-round or third-round pick last month if he had declared for the regular draft, but he decided to stay in school. If a team makes a selection in the supplemental draft, it must forfeit its pick in that same round in the '08 draft.

"With those guys, we always investigate them and look at them," Titans General Manager Mike Reinfeldt said. "The whole supplemental process is another way to add to your team, and sometimes you find players who can really help you."

We discussed this a bit in the IDP forum when his academic issues drove him into the supplemental draft.Oliver was considering coming out early, but he was handed a 4th round/day two evaluation from the NFLPA's Draft Advisory Board. I'm not sure what the late second early 3rd stuff above is based on. I think it's a given he would have fallen below Hughes who was late 3rd, and I suspect the NFLPA had it about right and he would have been a fourth rounder.

Several of us FBGs were watching and commenting on the game against Calvin here or in the FFA. You really cannot credit Oliver too much for Calvin's bad numbers. Most of that was on Reggie Ball just having a horrific performance, then you would have to credit Charles Johnson, who was unstoppable rushing the QB, and finally Oliver had a double and triple coverage help in that game.

All that said, I think he is a top five CB for next season. He has nice size and plays physical. His ball skills are NFL quality. If he could stay at Georgia and turn in another quality season, he is certainly a candidate for late 1st and early 2nd round next year, so grabbing him with a 2nd in the supp makes sense.

I haven't seen much of his play, but if this is the case then I hope the Giants target him in the supplemental draft. They have one of the worst, if not the worst, CB situation in the NFL.

I've read that the Cowboys could be interested in him with their 1st round pick.

Scott Wright of NFL Draft Countdown has him at #7 overall.

Pete Prisco has him at #19.

CNNSI has him in the top 20.

I'd be very disappointed if Dallas did that. Scott Wright is just goofy having him that high. The others are probably high also, but there is a reasonable argument for Oliver being the #2 corner in next year's draft. It is also reasonable to believe three underclassman corners will grade higher and declare, making Oliver the #5 corner... possibly lower. It's hard to say considering he cannot play out his senior season. I do feel comfortable saying he was not a first day pick this year.

Im already hearing that Brandon Flowers (va tech) is thinking about jumping... He might have snuck into the late 3rd but being graded around McCauley and Hughes seems about right to me.

Malcolm Jenkins and Justin King being the other two underclassmen I would quickly grade higher than Oliver. I happily listen to Construx re his Nittany Lions, but not on King. I don't care what his opinion is and I don't know. The kid is amazing. I have him neck and neck with Cason with higher (much higher) upside. Jenkins has Buckeye-can't-miss-corner written all over him. Thus, Dallas should have a little patience with this extra 1st round pick, imo.

Oliver will have his pro day on June 20th.
Done
Oliver did not dazzle scouts in the 40-yard dash, where most scouts contacted by ESPN.com clocked him in the mid- to high-4.5s, and one timed him at 4.62. But speed has never been a strong suit for Oliver, who possesses excellent natural coverage abilities, solid "ball" skills, and good football instincts.

...

Most scouts acknowledged that Oliver, who registered a 33 ½-inch vertical jump and a time of just under 7.3 seconds in the three-cone change of direction drill during the one-hour session, is better on game day than in a workout environment. Toward that end, Oliver demonstrated good range, hands and burst to the football in individual position-type drills.

"You always feel like you can do better," Oliver said. "But what's done is done. You've got to make the best of it. All I can do is keep working hard, get into [an NFL training] camp, and show that I belong at that level. I feel like I'll have an opportunity."
I'm hearing 4.55 is sort of the official unofficial 40 number scouts are giving him. I'm sure he gets a little break for not being as keenly prepared for drills and sprints as his 07 draft peers... but.We can forget about anyone using a first on him. 2nd rounders next year are looking pretty juicy too. I can't see a team justifying one. Without looking at any notes, I can think of 5 very talented underclassmen corners who probably grade even or better than Oliver. Cason is nearly a lock for top senior CB. There's a freak coming back from injury (Bowman), Lowery looking like the real deal at SJSU... Tribble is good, Castille is all-SEC 1st team, Jackson from LSU is probably better, USC has Thomas who should grade very high. It's nice to get Oliver a year ahead of any of these guys with a headstart developing him, but I'm guessing a 3rd rounder is the max he'll go for, or should go for, imo.
