Paypal Fraud (1 Viewer)

Footballguy
I woke up this morning to emails saying I sent a total of $3,000 to three separate people through my paypal account.  I have already reported this as fraudulent activity and changed my passwords.  Has anybody been through paypal's resolution process?  Doing some googling it seems like they don't always refund this type of fraud.  If they don't refund I will contact my credit card company as all the transactions went through my CC since I don't maintain a paypal balance.

I have no idea how my account got compromised.  I never click on weird links or anything.  I'm thinking my email/password combo may have been leaked through one of the umpteen breaches over the internet over the years.

This did happen to me once (legit fraud, not a phishing scheme). The Chinese somehow gained access to my account and transferred $500 to themselves. It was caught while it was still pending and I got it reversed.

2 step verification is your friend.
This.  I had someone try to buy "ripple coin" on ebay with my paypal.  I reported it as fraud and got my money back and have had the 2 Step verification (they txt me a code to greenlight the transaction) and haven't had any issues with ebay or paypal since.

I was pretty impressed when I got the email.  Then I noticed the typos.  The other thing is I don’t have a PP account associated with the email I received it at.  It even showed an EBay user and had all transaction info which looked legit.  Very impressive.  I immediately checked my actual PP account and no activity.  Good times.

ETA: I can post it if anyone is interested.

I went through this 8 months ago. Not only was my PayPal hit but u had 43,000 dollars stolen from my savings account. They did it in small transactions over the course of 3 weeks and since I rarely check my savings I never noticed. Nor did the bank EVER alert me of anything (although they love shutting down my card when I'm overseas even when I've asked them not to).

PayPal has a pretty serious fraud dept.. Call them they will take care of it. They did for me.

43k from savings?  In small amounts? Like what? 300 transactions of 80 bucks or  something?

You had your PayPal account linked to a savings account?  One with more than 43K in it?

Somewhat surprised that PayPal didn't just say, "well that was dumb."   :lmao:

11 transactions of anywhere from 300 to 2000 dollars, finally they got greedy and did a 13,000 dollar payment.

And the bank STILL never alerted me.

No.  But it was probable it was the same folks who "hacked" both through online means.

BTW I switched banks immediately as well. Not excusable for the lack of alerts there
My experience with banks is they all suck. Worst is all the nickel & diming. I noticed recently my bank wants $7 if I want funds available in one business day on a mobile deposit. That used to be the standard, now it's 2 business days if I don't pay the fee. Doesn't really impact me, but this crap is a big deal for 20somethings just getting established and working folks struggling to pay their bills every month.

Technology makes these transactions cheaper than ever for the banks. They just want to bend you over because they can.

While we're at it, if you haven't set up 2 step verification for your email account (and any other important accounts), then you should.

Love having my AMEX tied to my iPhone, where they give me a note whenever a 'Card Not Present' transaction is made. I actually get two notices, one from the AMEX app and another is a text. I also get notices thru the app when a transaction when is made.

I have set my AMEX to be the prime account for PP.

2 step verification is your friend.
Just set this up... thanks.
How do you set that up on PP?

TIA!

Good luck trying to steal 43,000 from my savings account.

Over how long of a time period? I think savings accounts are limited to 6 withdrawals in a 30 day period due to regulations. PS - Hope you are doing well, GB!

Under settings and then I believe click on security.  Then something about two step.

I believe so.  You enter a phone number, then it sends you a code to validate.  From then on, anytime you log in they text you a code that you also have to enter.
This is right.  I had to do it from the site and not from the app on my phone.

Wait, so all I have to do is read the thread? WOW! :hangs head in shame:

It shows up on the Menu as 'Security Keys' - That threw me looking for '2-Step Verification.'

Thanks!!

All the Chinese? $500 doesn't seem like a big payday for a billion people.

@Cavalier  let's report those Crypto losses as fraud

I mean venmo wants to have your actual user id and password for your bank.  This seems extreme to me at least compared to paypal.

While we are here, is that something people are ok with?

I've given Venmo all my money and I ask them for an allowance when I want to buy something.  Seems ok.

It always bothered me when I called paypal. The person on the other end was on the other side of the world.... with my bank account data.

I turned on two step verification on just about everything after the Equifax hack. It can be a pain, but I sure sleep better at night. A big one is investment accounts as they don't have the same protections as bank accounts.

So my account was hacked by someone who must speak spanish. It was paypal's fault and they're in the process of rectifying it. They didn't provide any details, but from what I've gleaned they've been experiencing issues with hackers breaching accounts through a backdoor. I'm guessing that's what happened here.

But now all of my default settings are in spanish. I don't know spanish and I don't have a lot of patience. Do any of you have paypal and know spanish? Paypal doesn't take customer service phone calls and the only way to contact anything for help purposes is to login - but once I do I don't know where to go because spanish.

If you login on a normal browser (not the app) click the settings wheel in the top right corner

That will ring up the settings screen and right underneath your profile section (picture, name, join date) on the left is account options, first drop down is language, should be idomas in Spanish

I've had 4 paypal disputes this year. Have never had one in the past.  One was a legit item I bought from an ad on facebook that just wasn't coming. Once I disputed the charge 1 1/2 months later, it magically had tracking and was delivered before the resolution time window. I hate buying things I see on facebook and always google the company and do some research to find out if they are legit.  Two other transactions were from a "little tikes" sale. NOT a legit company. Total scam. Charges came through the next day in someone's name and much higher than what she "purchased". The site she followed was a total knock-off of the little tikes site. Apparently that is a decent size scam when I looked it up. And then last month she was like "I never got this table I ordered for the patio." When I asked her where she ordered it from the answer was of course "Facebook". Again.. Not a legit site. I disputed it and the "seller" replied to the inquiry on paypal with some bogus tracking. Should have resolution by tomorrow.

Luckily while my wife is making accounts on fake sites she isn't using the same passwords she uses for other stuff. I've moved on to auto generated long passwords using the lastpass.com generator. Use them as a password manager. Of course if they get hacked, I'm screwed. But it is impossible to have good passwords that are different for every site and have a way to access them easily. And of course 2 step verification should be turned on for EVERY ACCOUNT YOU HAVE THAT OFFERS IT. It is a pain, but totally worth that extra step.

MFA is the way to go
