I was at an event this morning and ran into my friend Mickey Spagnola, Dallas Cowboys beat writer. He said some in the Dallas organization have stressed the need to add young depth at QB behind Tony Romo and the team is impressed with QB Colt Brennan, Hawaii and could be ready to select him as early as in the late 2nd round, most likely 3rd if he's still there. He mentioned they want to continue to develop him over the coming seasons but they feel his development as a passer rates at the top of their board already amongst all rookie QB's.

I think if they draft him, they keep Brad Johnson around one more year as the primary backup, develop Colt Brennan as the third QB, and Colt Brennan becomes Romo's primary backup QB by 2009. This seems like a Jerry Jones type pick, and they've realized through Romo the value of developing a young QB on the bench.

Aren't most observers saying that Colt Brennan is best suited for a West Coast offense with his questionable arm strength?

I thought he was not even supposed to be drafted at this point???? I don't think that will happen, but I did not think he would go before the 6th...

Well I have heard they are looking to get a QB in this draft before. I hope they do not use a 2cnd on one though. Maybe that will be done if/when they trade down from the 28 and pick up an extra 2cnd rounder. I doubt Colt will be the best available though at that time. Dallas may draft a QB, they need to groom a backup for sure but they need secondary/wr help more and the second round will be the targeted there. I think. 3rd maybe we will see tomorrow.

And that would be the first pick met with laughter at RCMH if he goes that high.
You've got that right.Sounds like somebody is leading somebody down a dark alley again.Dallas won't take a QB until the second day, if they do at all.I know it's been a consideration, although the right guy would have to be in the right place at the right time. They're not going to use a high draft pick on a "project".

If they like Brennan, and he was spectacular at the Combine, then it certainly appears they can afford to wait until late in the draft to pick him up. Fwiw, his quick release reminds me a lot of Romo's.

Colt Brennan has talent, although a great deal of time will be spent on adapting to a conventional passing offense. The offense he ran at Hawaii was very similar to a Mike Martz offense, in that it relies on sight adjustments "after the snap" that both the QB and WRs have to be in tandem with. Simply put, the QB is throwing to open space as opposed to a timed throw or by anticipation of when and where a WR comes out of his break.

So if he (Mickey) told you this this morning, why would he then post this just a few hours later (April 25, 2008 3:56 PM)?Randy Childs, Worcester, Mass.: Do you see any chance of the Cowboys drafting a quarterback in this year's draft? I love the job Tony Romo is doing and have no doubt that he can lead this team to a Super Bowl and will have success for many years to come. But we have an old backup and our third-stringer doesn't come with the pedigree of some of the quarterbacks that will likely be available in the middle rounds.

Mickey: I was sort of with you until you said "middle rounds," and to me that's like using a third, fourth or fifth rounder on a developmental quarterback. That might be a tad too high unless you have a veritable steal on your hands. Now I understand the logic, and it would be great to find a guy worthy of being groomed, but here is what happens with those guys generally. They are signed to no more than a three-year deal. They sit the first year, totally. They might get some significant snaps in training camp and preseason games the second year. By the third year they might actually show you something. But after that, they become restricted free agents and you are paying a lot to reserve the rights to a guy who likely hasn't been on the field all that much. You might have just groomed the quarterback for another team. Kind of a Catch 22 situation with quarterbacks these days.

Wasn't it Mike Martz at the Senior Bowl who began tinkering with Brennan's mechanics and it was then that his spiral downwards began?? Not sure if anything/one named "Mike Martz" will be good for Colt.

I was only referring to Martz's offensive design, not his schooling or coaching skills.
