Perry to be an every down back (2 Viewers)

Despite having a lot of Perry threads, I think this is significant enough news to have a separate thread.

Q: Will Chris have more of an opportunity to shine, with Rudi not here?

ML: He's never had that opportunity, so this is his chance. This is what he's asked for and wanted. He's worked extremely hard to return from his injury to have this (opportunity), and he's made good on it. Now it's time, so he has everything to play for. It ought to be exciting to him..

Q: Is Perry the bell cow?

ML: Right now he'll be our starting back. We have felt very comfortable keeping him in there on third down, so I think he'll log more playing time than anyone we've had back there for a while.

He hardly held up as a change of pace back. Guy has 73 carries in 3 years. Now I should expect to see him in on 40-50 plays a game? Come on.

Prove me wrong Chris.

Let the Perry hype continue. I'm sitting patiently on the Kenny Watson bandwagon, where I've been for 2 or 3 years now. When Christyl gets hurt again, Kenny will take us to the promised land.

If true I'd think he's a viable RB2, even with the expected trouble in Cincy (at least I expect it). He catches a lot of passes and there's really no one else on the roster to punch it in - so he's going to score some points even if it's Lendale White style.

I know it's not college, but Perry was a workhorse at Mich.

In fact, he holds a couple of school records attesting to his durability.

From wiki:

Michigan Rushing Records

*Most rushing attempts, season: 338, Chris Perry (2003)

*Mst rushing attempts, game: 51, Chris Perry (November 1, 2003 at Michigan State)

No real surprise to see him to be put in the every down role. That's not the issue IMO as far as his value (because the guy had/has the skill set to play all 3 downs) -- it all comes down to can the guy stay healthy for any length of time.

Wow, snagged him off waivers in 2 leagues (1 keeper/cap, 1 redraft) about 2 weeks ago and I can't believe I ended up with a 3-down back. I sure hope the injuries are behind him for a while.

I just got him in my homey league but I really can't see him doing much with the schedule Cincy has. It's pretty rough.

if you are in ppr, i would think schedule or not, hasn't perry proven he can catch the ball, which will help even if the bengals are behind?

couple years ago he caught 50 balls while only logging 60 carries.

project that out to 240 carries, and that's 200 catches.

not that anyone cares, but i am as high on perry as anyone (was mocked for taking him in the sixth round of a draft earlier this week, which now seems reasonable) and despite my enthusiasm, i think i am going to try to trade him ASAP. dorsey, watson, injuries, imploding team potentially....it is very possible he will never be more valuable than right now!

Incredibly frustrating that I felt like the head of his bandwagon for years when everyone else was down on him and said he sucked, and last year I finally hit my breaking point and gave up on him, and now he's getting the shot on everyone else's teams.

I stand by what I've been saying for years, that if he can remain healthy he will be a stud.

I had all 3 of my drafts earlier this week and got Perry in all of them:

10 team: round 10 (pick 91)

12 team: round 11 (pick 122)

14 team: round 8 (pick 109)

All leagues are PPR. He's no better than a RB 4/5 at this point for any of my teams.

Any production I get for that kind of value is pure gravy.

i look for cincy to sign another back and i think it will be s.alexanderhe was there for a couple of visits early on.
The Scouts' Buzz: Why Alexander should make himself comfortable Story Highlights Shaun Alexander hasn't found much room to run the past two seasons, averaging 3.5 yards per carry over that span.Brad Mangin/SIOne of the biggest offseason surprises has been the lack of interest in former league MVP Shaun Alexander. The nine-year veteran continues to sit on the sidelines despite boasting a Hall of Fame résumé that includes 9,429 rushing yards and 112 career touchdowns. Although Alexander had immediate visits with the Bengals and Saints after his release, he has yet to receive a solid offer from either team and hasn't made any other visits at this point. Critics point to his age and recent spate of injuries as concerns, but his career production suggests a team eventually will take a flyer on Alexander at the right price. However, several scouts attribute Alexander's astounding production to an ultra-talented Seahawks' offensive line that featured two Pro Bowlers (Walter Jones and Steve Hutchinson) and many pointed out that he has "lost a step" in the two seasons following his MVP campaign. "He is a good player, but you wonder how many other runners could've had success behind that line," said a NFC personnel executive. "He never displayed great toughness between the tackles, so you naturally assume that a tough, hard-nosed runner would've been more productive." Alexander's finesse running style has drawn the ire of Seahawks' coaches in the past and his inability to pick up tough yards in various short yardage situations has led to questions about his toughness. As a poor blocker and a marginal receiver, Alexander offers little as a complementary player. Thus, he is viewed throughout the league as a "stop-gap" solution for a team that suffers from a catastrophic injury or has a roster full of underperforming runners during the preseason. Alexander is going to be 31 years old, clearly best days behind him. I don't see Cinni making a play for him. The have five RB/FB on their roster, I think they keep/stay with the ones they have, as they are better then any FA out their now.

what are you trying to get/give for perry in dynasties? ppr and non? got him and watson in a couple of leagues and somehow everyone wants to trade for him .. just don't want to open another thread but would be great to have some other opinions about his trade value

Do you realize that Watson is a 30 years old pedestrian carreer back up .
How many pro bowls has Chris Perry been too? How many seasons has Perry lasted the entire 16 games while being a backup rb? Watson had more rushing yds last yr than Perry has combined yds in his entire career.

Means nothing at all , Jessy Chatman also had more yards last season then Perrys entire carreer and he is out of a job today ( Actually Chatman is probably more talented then Watson ) . Its only a queation of health ( Perry has been very unlucky wtih injuries but it has nt been chronical "correct me if i am wrong " so its not that bad ) a healthy Perry is a way way better RB then the 30years old serviceable at best Watson.

Despite that, if both are healthy as they are right now, Perry >>>>>> Watson.

I have zero faith that Perry can stay healthy. So by end of the year Watson>>>>>>>>Perry.

Can you believe we are arguing over Kenny Watson .Kenny Watson = Artose Pinner , Jessy Chatman , Aaron Stecker, Nick Goings who had a 800 yards rushing season a few years back in the same kind of situation as Watson and he aint no starter .Just to name a few.

The best job a backup rb can have is being number 2 on the depth chart behind a player like Perry who has shown he cannot stay healthy even in a backup role.

Chris Perry was the Bengals First Round Pick in 2004.

Watson went undrafted and is 30 yrs old.

Bengals prob have little shot at making the playoffs.

Guess who they want to put more time into?

That is not in question. Perry's ability to stay on the field is.

The guy who gets it done. I don't mean that as an endorsement of Watson at all. I just mean that the Bengals give no thought whatsoever to Perry's first rounder status. That's ancient history.

No offense but I will take the starter over the backup everytime. Enjoy watson.
Ah the typical guppy move. Can't see the forest thru the trees.

 How is taking a starting RB on a team with a great passing offense who will be an every down RB a guppy move?
