Peter Liang Guilty of Manslaughter for Death of Akai Gurley (1 Viewer)

Several thoughts...

-Why is a rookie cop doing that job? Maybe that is rookie work.

-I'm sure at some point the police were begged by the law abiding citizens stuck in these homes to please help them and encouraged the police to patrol their buildings. The police should have a new policy of not patrolling these buildings unless called for an emergency. I would bet that will start to happen and then they will be blamed for increases in crime.

-If people were law abiding citizens we wouldn't need police officers so let's not try and act like all citizens are angels because they are not.

-Lot of jewelry on daddy there, what line of work was he in to be able to afford all that gold while raising a 2 year old in government housing? I must have been doing it wrong all these years.

-This guy should have never been a police officer. Not sure what part of NY this guy is from but he looks weak and incapable of that job.

-They shouldn't let anyone under 30 be an actual police officer. Desk work for the guys and gal in their 20s until they learn what it is really all about.
WTF? This has nothing to do with anything, how do you know the value of said jewelry?
Cost or no cost he is projecting an image, glad someone found that buried in there.

:lmao: :lmao: what does this have to do with a bullet ricocheting off a wall and killing him?

:wall: fml, I got hooked

Most people who become cops in NYC are because they cant hack it as anything else. They are the dumb jocks in school that cant bully anybody anymore so they go out and get a license to carry a gun.
I can't speak of NYC cops but in Chicago and LA I have met a number of cops and I would not describe them in that way at all.
One of the bigger bullies in my younger brother's high school class went on to be a cop. We all kinda expected the worst, but more than a decade later and he's actually a pretty decent human being from all accounts. It turns out we don't all stay like we were in high school, who knew?

I only know of two kids that became cops. Both were good to great people as teenagers. I cant speak of how they conduct themselves 20 years later.

Some of the reactions seem strange to me. An incompetent cop screwed up and killed someone accidentally. Don't see why anything about the victim is relevant.

It shouldn't but, the political climate right now shines a bright light on the race and color of all involved for whatever agenda ppl may have...

Very rare for a cop to be found guilty on manslaughter.... I'm pretty confident if the races are switched, this becomes more of a routine case.

Had the victim an affinity for body armor instead of jewelry he might still be alive today. When oh when will body armor become the new bling.

I think Jared's needs to get to work on their next slogan. With valentine's day right around the corner they are missing an opportunity. They just have to convince folks that purchase of body armor for a loved one makes every bit the sense that purchasing them a clear rock expresses that love and passion.

Jared's your fine jewelry and body armor store.

I thought they claimed they didn't even know he had shot somebody- gun went off, IIRC as he was trying to open a door, ricocheted off a wall in a stair well and hit the poor kid who happened to be there and who they couldn't see.

I don't know the the law for 2nd degree manslaughter- so this is purely my knee-jerk reaction: terrible accident, rookie cop should never have had his gun out, and should be guilty for the ramifications of it's accidental discharge. somebody is dead because he was a dumb-### with a lethal weapon.

eta: I didn't finish FC's post where he brings up the victim's arrest record- but wtf is the point of bringing up his arrest record unless it's to somehow justify this. I'll hang up and listen...

It was a follow-up to someones question how the cop "was the good guy"... I was just comparing the two people, nothing to justify being dead, you should just finish the post.

You realize the cop was not white, correct?

Correct.

If a black cop accidentally shot a Chinese guy under the same circumstances, I'm confident he does not get Manslaughter.

A Daily News investigation found that at least 179 people were killed by on-duty NYPD officers over the past 15 years. Just three of the deaths have led to an indictment in state court. In another case, a judge threw out the indictment on technical grounds and it was not reinstated.

Only one officer who killed someone while on duty has been convicted, but he was not sentenced to jail time.

Not sure how that contradicts what Reaper said.

I would think accidentally firing a shot that ends up killing someone is manslaughter every time, cop or no cop. I am not an expert in law by any stretch of the imagination, though. Is my thought off base?

The difference between cop or no cop here (ESPECIALLY A COP PATROLLING ONE OF THE WORST PROJECTS IN AMERICA) is that the cop routinely needs said gun in his hand, compared to Joe Citizen who does not.

You were generalizing all cops based off of some people you knew growing up, I was stating factual evidence based on the backgrounds of two individuals.

Obviously bullets are attracted to precious metals.

Does the difference impact whether or not an accidental discharge killing someone is manslaughter?

If my responsibilities include driving a car all day and you have no license, the likelihood I'll be an accident is far greater than yours.

His actions are far from justifiable, but he shouldn't be facing 15 years in jail right now.

Just look at the guy's picture, he was destined to die at the end of a police barrel, was just a matter of time. If it wasn't Jimmy Wong it would have been Jimmy Smith or Jimmy Jenkins or Jimmy Jihadi that put him down, the media and most of you are making this into a race issue.

So are you saying manslaughter should have lesser penalties for cops than non-cops?
No, I'm saying this wasn't manslaughter, this was an accident with an inexperienced cop. I blame the system as much as I blame the individual here.
I'd be curious as to how you'd craft a manslaughter definition that doesn't include accidentally discharging a firearm that directly leads to a death. But as I said earlier, I am far from being a legal expert.
