Peterson wins offensive ROY (1 Viewer)

It may seem like a no brainer, but I thought Joe Thomas deserved serious consideration. Of course I thought he didn't have much of a shot seeing as how glorified Peterson has been and how unglorified offensive lineman usually are.

Really? A rookie RB averages 5.6 yds/carry, 13 total TD's, 1341 yds rushing, and broke the NFL record for most rushing yards in a game, and you think an offensive lineman should have won? Joe Thomas is a very solid lineman and should be a future pro bowler, but I don't think he deserved serious consideration

Look at the Browns Oline from last year, and then this year. Thomas led that O-Line and stepped in impressively. Peterson deserves the award, but Joe Thomeas should be in the conversation as well.

No knock on ADP. However he got those yards behind a fine offensive line and he did miss significant time to injuries. I count that as a mark against him, not for him. His 296 yard effort was crazy good.On the other hand, Joe Thomas jumped right into the left tackle role for Cleveland and anchored the offensive line for 16 games. Other top OL picks like Gallery never mastered the position and DBrickashaw Ferguson was never more than mediocre for the Jets. Its hard to judge linemen since they are part of the unit. Hard to tell what the impact of Seth McKinney and Eric Steinbach was, but neither were considered stars with their previous teams (Miami and Cincy). The turnaround for the Cleveland offensive Line was nothing short of amazing. In Chris Smith's pre-deadon rankings, he had them at 20. My guess is that if he were making that ranking now, Cleveland would be in the top 10. Offensive rushing yards and Rushing TDs increased by more than 40% from 1335 yds and 7 TDs respectively. Sacks went down form 1 in 9.5 attempts to 1 in 19.5. They made millions for Derek Anderson who will get a nice payday somewhere and rejuvenated the career of Jamal Lewis. I could argue that his 216 yd effort in week 2 was even more improbable than ADP's 296 yard rushing record.

Since I'm built more like a lineman than a running back, my bias is obvious. However, its clear that you don't have a good football team without a great offensive line. Just ask Tom Brady or Larry Johnson. Anyway, thats why I don't feel embarassed to vote for Joe Thomas over ADP.

Picking up the RB position is much easier than picking up an OL position. These awards are geared towards offensive productivity. A good comparison would be to compare what Minnesota did rushing last year to this year as well as Cleveland's productivity. Who helped the team more? With that criteria the nod goes to Thomas.

Yes, he did.And Peter King thought so too.

Offensive Rookie: Joe Thomas, T, Cleveland. No disrespect to Adrian Peterson, but for 16 games, Thomas was more impactful on the Browns than Peterson was on Minnesota.
He knows a little bit about the NFL.

In the story you will see out of 50 votes (nationwide panel of 50 media members), ADP got 46.5 and Joe got 3.5. Joe did get some recognition, albeit quite small.

Joe really had no chance according to history, btw. Sort of like the Heisman. Despite the "Offensive" Rookie of the Year name, it really should be named QB, RB or WR Rookie of the Year just based on past winners. Only winner not listed as a QB/RB/WR was an Outside End in 1968.

I think it was a no brainer for Thomas. You can make a statistical arguement that he was the best Left Tackle in the NFL this year.

According to Football Outsiders, Cleveland's OLine Ranked 3rd in Rushing this year, and 5th in Pass blocking. Last year, they ranked 31st in Run Blocking and 26th in pass blocking. Last year they gave up 54 sacks, this year, they gave up 19.

For run blocking, they also list the stats based on the direction of the Run. Last year Cleveland Ranked 31st running toward the Left End, and 18th running towards left tackle. This year they ranked 1st running toward Left End, and 3rd running toward Left Tackle.

Peterson had a great season, but he missed two games and he had 5 fumbles. Additionally, the position he plays is not as valuable as Left Tackle. Here are the Salary #s from the NFL.

Offensive Line (Which Really means Left Tackle. No one Franchises a Center) - $9,556,000

Running Back - $6,999,000

To everyone’s shock and awe, Vikings RB Adrian Peterson was named the Associated Press NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year today. Peterson is the fifth Vikings player to win that honor; WR Randy Moss was the last, in 1998.

Peterson and the rest his teammates are having their final team meeting this morning and will be available for interviews afterwards.

Peterson received 46.5 of 50 votes in balloting conducted by the Associated Press. Cleveland tackle Joe Thomas was the only other player who received votes.

Peterson finished second in the NFL to San Diego’s LaDainian Tomlinson with 1,341 yards and set a league record with 296 rushing yards in a game against the Chargers.

Bonus time: Peterson will earn a $250,000 incentive for winning the Associated Press award.

AP was the runaway winner. No doubt AP did more for his team then any other Rookie in the 2007 draft.
