Since 2012 is officially the season of over analyzing Peyton Manning I'm throwing my hat in the ring. I re watched his 8 attempts this morning and here are the results
8 attempts (1 called back for offensive holding)
2 targets each
Tamme
Decker
Thomas
1 target
Stokley
Ball
1st and 10 from ~ Broncos 40.
Target- Tamme coming across the middle.
Result- excellent coverage- broken up.
Analysis- a decent, but not perfect, throw. Manning had room to lead Tamme slightly more and a short completion where Tamme has to break a tackle to make something happen. Dallas Clark turned quite a few of these drag routes into big plays when Manning would hit him in stride and allow Clark to just step out of a tackle and turn it up field.
1st and 10 from ~ midfield
Target- Tamme on a quick hitting play
Result- deflected by the LB, Tamme hauls it in and finds the first down marker.
Analysis- total defensive misread by Manning. He reads blitz from the linebacker who took one step in on a bluff and then was right there in the passing lane. Could have been a slightly tough INT or more likely a batted ball for an incompletion, lucked into a completion.
2nd and 7 ~ Bears 40
Target- Decker- 3rd or 4th read
Result- completion for a 1st down
Analysis- Halfhearted play action (Mcgahee didn't sell at all and just went for the block) with tons of time. Manning went 3-4 reads deep and probably could have gone 8 with that kind of time. Hits Decker on the opposite side of the field on a comeback route for a 1st down.
2nd and 10 ~ Bears 20
Target- Thomas
Result- completion for a 1st down called back for offensive holding
Analysis- Play action on the inside handoff, Thomas gains enough, but not a lot, of separation and Manning hits him with a nice pass with a little bit of pressure. Offensive holding could have been called on either the right or left tackle imo.
2nd and 20 ~ Bears 30
Target- Ball on a dumpoff
Result- complete for a 3 yard gain.
Analysis- Manning checked down pretty quickly as there was some pressure.
3rd and 17 ~ Bears 30
Target- Decker
Result- 20 yard completion, 1st down.
Analysis- Manning hit Decker in stride on a nice pass across the middle for a first down. Decker was where he was supposed to be in the zone and Manning finds him easily.
2nd and 8 ~ Bears 10
Target- Thomas on a fade
Result- incomplete
Analysis- On first watch it looks like Manning overthrows him but on rewatching I changed my mind. Thomas (6'3) is in man on the outside against Jennings (5'8). Thomas goes out and does a half a stutter step and then looks up for the ball as he drifts towards the back pylon. My read is that Manning is throwing to a spot and he just wants Thomas to head for that back cone and trust the ball will be there. This makes the most sense as a play call with the size differential and ball placement Thomas would have a great chance to win a jump ball especially. Manning's placement would have given him a good chance to come down in bounds.
3rd and 8 ~ Bears 10
Target- Stokley across the middle
Result- tipped up and INT
Analysis- I can't tell if the defensive back gets his hand on the ball or not or if Stokley just doesn't hang on but this is similar to the 1st attempt in that the completion is there if Manning gets the ball just a little bit further in front.
Overall conclusions- Manning had a pretty crappy series. 3 balls were either tipped or could have been and he could have had 2 INTs. Protection was great on 1 play but most of the passes were quick throws and Peyton was still under some pressure + 1 holding call.
