Philadelphia Eagles draft thread (1 Viewer)

Vikings got Artis Hicks for a sixth (and switching some fourths)...good pickup for the Vikings?
I always liked Hicks because he came out of nowhere and basically held his own no matter what position on the OL we asked him to play. But with the additions of Herremans, Andrews, Jean-Gilles and Justice these last few years, he simply was going to have a great deal of difficulty making the roster.Childress knows his capabilities and he'll either start inside or be their 6th OL for sure.

And they even got the phenom - Jeremy Bloom!
:X Not happy with Bloom's selection AT ALL...but plenty of folks around here insist I'll come to love the kid when he starts returning kicks for big yardage

You'll definitely like him as a return man over Reno "Fair Catch" Mahe...
Good point...although I would've taken just about anyone in lieu of Mahe as our returner. Bloom is just this mighty mite of a guy, with a pretty decent sized ego to boot. Hopefully he realizes he's not going to play WR for us.

I hated having to see Reno Mahe play, he no way deserved to play in th NFL, look forward to Bloom replacing him. He'll also kick a## in the mogul competition at the NFL superstars show :P

What I like about Bloom is that he seems hungry. He may not make the roster, but I think its a great idea to give him a shot. Decent upside.

Omar Gaither

OLB | (6'1", 234, 4.82) | TENNESSEE

Scouts Grade: 56

Strengths: An athletically gifted OLB that played out of position at SLB in college. Is at his best in space. Possesses decent speed but is quicker than fast and moves well laterally. Is quicker than fast. Shows fluid hips and very good COD skills. Is a playmaker with a nose for the ball. Has a powerful upper body. Uses his hands well to keep blockers from reaching his body. Takes solid angles in pursuit and shows excellent closing burst. Is instinctive and always seems to be in on big plays. He has good hip explosion and upper body power as a tackler, especially for his size. He will wrap up in space and does a good job of bringing down bigger runners. Shows good initial burst and can be disruptive in the backfield when turned loose upfield. Is instinctive and athletic in coverage, and his recognition skills continue to improve.

Weaknesses: He's undersized and does not fit playing head-up over the TE. Lacks bulk and plays with a narrow base. Gets rag-dolled at the POA too often and needs to be on the move in order to be effective. He's aggressive but not necessarily physical. He lacks lower body strength to stand his ground in the phone booth. He's a fluid athlete but lacks ideal top-end speed for a WLB prospect.

Overall: Gaither played mostly on special teams as a true freshman in 2002 and as a sophomore in 2003. He stepped into the starting lineup at the SLB position for the final 11 games of the 2004 season, when he finished with 92 tackles, 12.5 tackles for loss and two sacks. Gaither started all 11 games as a senior in 2005 and finished with 78 tackles, 7.5 TFL, four sacks and four forced fumbles. Gaither has been an ascending prospect the last two years. He played mostly at the SLB position in college but projects as a WLB in the NFL. He is undersized and must continue to improve his bulk and lower body strength. Gaither may need a couple of years as a reserve in the NFL in order to develop physically and polish his skills, but he possesses enough natural talent to eventually push for a starting job. In the meantime, he can contribute as a nickel linebacker and on special teams. Gaither currently grades out as a mid-round prospect in the 2006 class.

At first I wasn't thrilled about trading up for Avant over Demetrius Williams, but after reading some grades I can see the point. DW could easily be the next Pinkston, and we know we don't need that. Avant looked good at the combine.

BTW - NFL network is kicking the #### of ESPN in the coverage with all the NFL Combine footage. The comparison of Leinart to Cutler was remarkable (Cutler sharper).

One more pick to go - and if it is RB Cedrick Humes from Va Tech this is an A+ draft.

What about DJ Shockley ;)

Anyone know why Gilles went so late? He was projected as one of the better guards in the draft. Also any word on why Justice slipped so far? Was it due to the character concerns (toy gun, prostitute)?

Still haven't heard anything additional on the Justice slippage. Hopefully the year long suspension in 2004 forced him to grow up in a hurry. As for Max-Jean Gilles, I think most teams just assumed he was a hockey player. Maybe he can play goal for the Flyers..although Esche is looking pretty good today. Aside from that, sounds like he has problems with his weight. He and Andrews should get along well.

I want a big back - and Humes can be just that. He's solid.Shockley - while he's a good QB prospect, do we really need to waste our 6th on our 3rd string / practice squad guy?

I want RB more. If we had 2 picks I could see a QB prospect.

That was my hope too - oh well. Just another late round DT who will probably be cut.

Give the Eagles credit: GREAT draft this weekend. Wish my Bears had 1/4 the talent eval people you guys do. Giles and Avant are absolute steals day two (along with the steals they got rounds 1 and 2).

Well, they are all prospects. Im trying to look to the future with grooming a replacement for #5. Also, if he comes a long nicely, we can always trade him ala AJ Feely

I'll give you that. I believe Green Bay used to do the same thing (Brunell).Second day QB projects are always possibilities.

I just wanted Humes. He's going to excel in Pittsburgh.

Very happy with this draft.

I think Gilles starts immediately, and Justice gets a year to learn (assuming Thomas stays healthy)...Just a great job by the Eagles.

I like the Avant pick, not a fast guy, but a guy who seems to know how to get open, which is needed with that batch of WRs.

I like Bloom as a returner, I also like him in 4 WR sets ala Tim Dwight, get some dime corner on him 5-10 yards off and he'll get open. I also like what I hear from him about focusing on football..>Maybe it's his agent feeding him lines, but he's saying all the right things.

Not sure about Gaither or Kabong (that's his name...right?) at SLB, but if one of them can get bowties Mcguitar off the field (and play decent), it's an awesome draft.

I'm a little surprised the national media hasn't been more positive about the Eagles draft...Some are impressed with the Birds picks, some are wishy-washy,,,Maybe it's because they didn't take a WR in the top 3 rounds?

Either way, luck was on the Eagles side this time, and the Eagles made the moves to capitalize and maximize their resources (which is what Fantasy Football is all about too...hmmmm)
