Philly Homers... what the lastest word on Trotter... (1 Viewer)

(Rotoworld) Newsday reports there's an "outside chance" Jeremiah Trotter's troublesome knees may force him to retire this offseason.

Impact: He didn't miss a game all last year, but Eagles defensive coordinator Jim Johnson says Trotter won't be an every-down player in 2007. He's also getting plenty of the blame for Philly's struggles against the run. Omar Gaither appears likely to see more snaps at MLB this upcoming season.

(Rotoworld) Eagles.com disputes a Newsday report that middle linebacker Jeremiah Trotter may be forced to retire because of his balky knees.

Impact: The report is called "completely off base," and Trotter is reportedly already working out in an effort to be better than he was in 2006. Trotter is still not expected to be an every-down player this coming season.

Since Jan 30th.. there has been no news article about him. The guys been a good IDP player so far in his career.

Hes 30 this season.

Hes posted 90 or more solos in 5 season and 88 last seaon. Hes only had 2 season in his starting career where he didn't post 90 or more. (2006 - 16 games - 88 solos; 2002 - 12 games - 58 solos)

He was only a 2 down player last year. More of the same. I haven't heard any of the reports of him retiring locally. Gaither will replace him but probably not this year.

The Philadelphia Inquirer reported a few weeks back that J. Trotter will be returning for 2007. I agree, expect him to be a 2 down LB for the most part. O. Gaither should eventually replace him in the middle, but until then, we can just enjoy the stats he puts up at the WLB spot :lmao:

Will Gaither be a three down backer in the future? Jim Johnson used everyone but the starters on third downs. He created a nickel LB role for Dawkins, then gave it to M.Lewis, and he used Barber some as well.

Everyone is hoping that they address LB on Day 1 of the draft.

It's a serious problem.

Trotter is on his last legs, literally. He'll play this year, and it'll be limited.

Dhani Jones is likely back at SAM with Gaither at WILL. He'll move over to be the MLB when it's 3rd down, with possibly Gocong or ( :lmao: ) McCoy in at Will. Shaun Barber is a spot guy.

The depth and skill are limited. They may even drop a safety into the box and play more nickel if everyone is healthy, going 4-2-5, but that's my supposition.

I'm hoping Willis falls to them. Popolszny (Sp?) is the next hope, but I'd settle for Beason.

Look for a heavily defensive draft.

(Also - they lost Ryan Fowler today, a guy they thought they had, to TEN. He would have been a spot guy but possibly the future MLB).

Agree on most counts. There was a lot of speculation early in the off-season that Dhani Jones was likely to be released, though. His play had fallen off significantly in 2005 and he was barely involved in the nickel packages in 2006 after being an important part of that unit in the past. The Eagles are hoping Gocong can complete the transition and start at SLB this year. Shawn Barber is done and unlikely to be re-signed unless the Eagles completely ignore LB during the draft. McCoy continued to be a mess despite his "impressive" off-season last year.It really looks like Omar Gaither is the only sure starter for now and he's proven himself capable as a three down player. Gocong would probably be next in line if he's able as a pass rush threat on passing downs. McCoy has no shot at a three down role. It's probably much more likely that Jim Johnson continues dropping a safety down than keeping Trotter in an expanded role, even with Michael Lewis out of the picture. A first day linebacker has excellent IDP potential here. Whether or not the Eagles take one will show just how worried about Trotter they are especially if they don't get/pass on Willis, as the crop of ILB look pretty similar after him. If they ignore the more heralded LB prospects altogether, it's worth keeping an eye on Torrance Daniels who got some playing time late in the season. Not much talk about him in the local post-mortems on the 2006 season, but the coaching staff had some nice things to say about him earlier in the year.

LBs are a mess :D Oustside of Gaither they have no 3 down guys. trotter will start in the middle. I think the staff wants Gocong to take over at the other OLB rplacing Jones and leaving him as a nickle LB.I don't see how they can use a 4-2-5 after losing Lewis. They don't have enough depth in the secondary to do it. (Maybe if they use W. James as the 5th guy and move Dawk up?_I would love Willis to fall to them but that won't happen. I expect Pozluszny to go before they pick at 26 but he could be there. However I doubt the Eagles would take a LB in the 1st. Its just not their style to take a guy who weighs less than 300 pounds in the first round though safety may be an option at 26.

Some good LB's should be there in later rounds. Timmons? Rufus Alexander?

I don't disagree about there being some interesting linebackers available late but I doubt that Timmons will make it out of the first round. Alexander will be a first day pick and could come off the board in the late second.

Given how bleak the LB picture looks right now for the Eagles, might they make a play for Briggs or June?

Doubtful. Briggs wants too much $$$ and the Eagles just don't pay the LB position.June may be possible if his price comes down and it looks like it is since there is so litle interest. But I have heard nothing of the Eagles even wanting an interview with him. So probably no to bothAnd I don't like the LB situation here in Philly but bleak may overstating it. Trotter is still a good MLB, Gaither is coming along and hopfully Gocong takes over for Bow-Tie and Speedbump at OLB. Drab maybe but not bleak :towelwave:
