Phone Interview; Surprise! (1 Viewer)

I got laid of on May. Got a call from an HR person who found me on Monster . We talked briefly, and a day later she contacted me to set up a phone interview with the hiring manager. This was scheduled for last week and rescheduled for yesterday at 9:30 am.

So I set up for the interview by having my resume, the job description, the company website, our email thread, all on screen for quick referral. The phone rings after 9:30. Turns out they sent me an email about 15 minutes before the scheduled interview with a link for a video conference app (Blue Jean) and code to get into the web conference. OH CRAP! While downloading/installing  Blue Jean, I run to the bedroom to grab a collared shirt, run my fingers through my hair and ##### about not having showered or shaved. As we start the interview I see my image on screen and wonder if the guys sitting at the conference room table are impressed by my Disney University pennant on the wall behind me.

Next time I have a phone interview scheduled I'll prepare a little differently, just in case.

That's not cool. They should have clarified between phone interview or video/Skype interview.
Agreed. Although, with their accents (interviewers are in Rome), I think the visibility helped me to understand what they were saying a little better.

Yeah, on the phone you don't get to see them waving their hands around (Italians).

When you need a job, a job is a job, but that would be a red flag to me. Not making it clear from the beginning that it was a video conference interview and then sending an email telling you that you needed to download software 15 minutes beforehand (and not immediately following up with a phone call) is really unprofessional and disorganized.

What if you had been somewhere not at home without a laptop or without WiFi?

Afterwards, I thought maybe it might have been wise to use that as an excuse to postpone. I could have made sure I felt presentable and maybe even printed out a map of Italy and their company logo to put on the wall behind me!

Or it's just Italian.
