Phone questions (1 Viewer)

I am going to be in the market for a cellphone.

I will be leaving my job and will be forced to return the cellphone I have ... An iPhone 4 I believe.

I had a cheap phone a few years ago, but will be looking for something better this time.

I'd like to keep it to $100 or less/month. I'd like to have phone, texting, ability to play games, all the goodies.

Is $200 enough for a good new phone and is $100/month reasonable?

With a contract, $200 is plenty to get a good phone. A lot of the new year model phones are coming out in the coming weeks/months so last year's versions are often free with a contract. The new ones are typically $200 with a contract. $100/month shouldn't be an issue if it's just you on the plan.

If you're looking for an off contract, unsubsidized phone then $200 is going to be tougher. The Nexus 5 is probably the cheapest high-end unsubsidized phone at $350.

The only reason to buy a phone with a contract is if youd don't have the cash to buy one outright. When you sign a contract and buy the phone at a discount rate, over the term of the contract you pay wayyyy more then you would have if you buy the phone outright.

I suggest you take a look at Hulks thread, there's several phones you can buy for around $200 without being locked into a long term contract, and plans from all the carriers for much much less than $100/month.

The thread is almost 40 pages, but dont worry about reading through it...just post in it asking Hulk about it. Tell him your budget, zip code, preferred carrier and your plan needs. He will give you options that will save you big money. Believe it or not you can get plans for $30-60 a month and not be tied down to a contract, and you will have unlimited talk, text, and the data you need.
