PICK-UP ALERT: Carlos Gomez, OF, NY Mets (1 Viewer)

Yesterday was his first game after being called up and this was Rotoworld's write-up:

Carlos Gomez-OF- Mets May. 13 - 6:38 pm et

Carlos Gomez had two hits, two runs scored and a stolen base Sunday in his major league debut.

Gomez doubled in his first major league at-bat. He'll start against lefties for as long as he's up, and today's showing might earn him some time versus righties.

Word is that he steals a lot of bases and is even faster than Jose Reyes. There's no telling how long he'll be up, but if he produces, I think he'll stay.

The kid looked good in his first game.

He will only be up in the majors until Alou returns. If Alou hits the DL Gomez will get some time over the next 2 weeks. As soon as Alou comes back Gomez will be sent back down. The Mets wanted to get him a taste.

Pretty soon (2008-2009) the Mets OF will look like this . . .

LF - Carlos Gomez

CF - Carlos Beltran

RF - Fernando Martinez/Lastings Milledge

I love the kid and it was a nice debut but unless he's one of those guys that plays up to the competition, he's going to be exposed badly at the MLB level.

He's improved his plate discipline so far this year and he has ridiculous speed (faster than Reyes according to even Reyes) but his power hasn't really developed yet and he had a sub .800 OPS in AAA.

My guess is that this is just a short-term thing to reward him for his play so far. Had Milledge or Johnson been healthy, either of them would have gotten the call over Gomez. Johnson just came off the DL on Friday so he wasn't a great option.

That said, if Alou goes on the DL between now and Thursday, when they need to call up a starter, he may stick for at least a few weeks.

Gomez would probably play RF in that scenario since he has the best arm but that's a small gripe. What Martinez is doing as an 18 year old in AA is awesome.

:goodposting: They are set up very nicely with the bats for the next few years. It's a nice core.Omar needs to spend $$$ on SP's over the next few seasons and this team will be around and in contention for a very long time.

Anyone in the pipeline to replace Delgado?

ETA - Imagine if they hadn't traded Kazmir

Mike Carp is currenlty being groomed to replace Delgado. Ugh - That Kazmir trade will always hurt.On a more positive note - the Mets did John Maine and El Duque (in a round about way) for Kris Benson.

anybody had their FAAB this week? If so, how much is Gomez going for? (be sure to indicate what your total budgets are)
