And tortillas really are being so disrespected. I think they might be #2 behind rice.

In our house, we could run out of potatoes, bread, and maybe pasta for weeks and months at a time, it's not a problem. RIce and tortillas are a must to have at all times.
Part of that could be that potatoes and bread go bad so much faster.

But you got rice or tortillas, you got a meal no matter what else you got on hand.

One over looked benefit too, with tortillas, is the chips aspect. Most carbs in this pole don't provide much crunch. That's where potatoes shine. But tortillas provide all the wonderful things they do, and still provide you with the option for crunchy chips.
sheez, get a room with your tortillas.

Hard to decide between bread and potatoes. Pasta could disappear from the earth today and it wouldnt affect my life one bit.

I guess I'll go with potatoes. Love them any way other than scalloped.

Bread wins just by virtue of pizza being in there. Doughnuts, rolls, bear claws, sandwiches are just there to enjoy the victory lap.
Bread also includes multiple varieties of cheese breads, from Brazil, pan de Bono from Colombia, and others from almost every county in Latin America. Indian subcontinent breads include multiple types of Flatbread, Naan, roti, etc. My Indian neighbor said every wife was supposed to make Naan daily. European breads include Mekitsa deep fried from Bulgaria, focaccias and ciabatta from Italy, pan de Barra from Spain, crumpets from the UK, pumpernickel from Germany, baguettes from France, plus hundreds more. Give me good sliced bread, a toaster, and butter and I'm a happy camper.

Beer is pretty much liquid bread: I went with option A.
With more meal prep time I could easily go without simple carbs as long as I'm not in a marathon training cycle, so this answer was very easy - the one that makes alcohol.

My wife, the South American born rice lover, wants to introduce you to the concept of "cucayo", which is Venezuelan slang for the crispy, kinda fried, kinda toasted rice that gets stuck to the bottom of the rice pot. It's amazing... you can have crunchy rice.

She adds that there's obviously far too few latins and asains on this board.

My first ex-wife is Cuban born. They call the toasted rice raspa or raspita. In Bolivia and Peru, where my 2nd ex and current roommate are from they call it cocolon. There's a wiki entry for scorched rice, apparently rice gets inadvertently or purposely burnt in every country, lol. BTW, there are a bunch of guys on this board married to Hispanic women.

Surprised for all the bread enthusiasm. I guess living in a place where rice is eaten nearly every meal taints my perspective.

But I don’t like rice much, either.

Give me pasta. And pizza with cauliflower crust.

Rice can be mixed with many food items. But how many different types of rice are there? Bread is man-made, so the options are in the thousands as I posted above. Maybe it's not fair to compare rice with bread.

This is why rice really shines when you cook a lot.
I essentially don't go out to eat or get take out (less than 10 times since 2018), and I work too much to have a lot of time devoted to cooking.

So, my answer to the question is what sets me up best to prepare a lot of great meals with minimal effort? For me, that answer is clearly rice.

We rotate 20-25lb bags for basmati and jasmine. A lot of nights, I'll just start some rice and then go digging though the fridge/freezer/pantry. Rice's versatility between cuisines is really great.

It also basically doesn't go bad, which is a big bonus. I can't be alone in having thrown out an embarrassing amount of bread and potatoes over the years.

And for anybody that just doesn't like rice that much, I'd highly recommend a rice cooker and using the pilaf method more. I never liked rice much growing up. My general exposure to it was poorly prepared rice. Not very appetizing, and certainly not something I'd want to eat regularly.

But quality rice properly cooked with great texture with good flavors imparted done with minimal effort? It's a real game-changer, particularly for cooking a lot.
