Picking a K by matchup... (1 Viewer)

I really think this time of the year is where K's and D's can be huge for your playoff team. I won last year by grabbing TB D a couple weeks before the playoffs and they were big down the stretch.

What do you consider when picking a K? Obviously weather is big. What about matchup? Do you like heavy favorites and hope for an offense to lay back after they get a large lead (Bironas vs. Lions on Thanksgiving)? Teams at home? Teams in shootouts?

Now's the time! every extra point (no pun intended) and leg up (pun intended) on your opponent could mean trophies and $$$$$

I use a rather pseudo-scientific combination of stats, matchups, my gut, and Kickermania. Namely, I try to identify teams that give up a lot of FGs, then I try to identify waiver wire kickers that get a lot of attempts, and determine whether the offense is capable, but not stellar. Then I check my gut and Kickermania to see if they 'jive'.

Initially, I picked up Vinatieri this week (against the Lions is always a good play), but I think he may not get anything put PATs. Dan Carpenter is looking good this week to me.

I agree. Vinatieri is probably a lock for 5 or 6 pts, but that could be it depending on how early Indy calls off the dogs. Carpenter is a great play this week (faces the team giving up the 2nd most pts to kickers this season (49ers) and with their defense playing better of late, you might expect many FGs in this game). In response to the OP, you should take a look at this link to see which teams have given up the most points to kickers.

My thought process in trying to decide between Akers and Elam this week. Just to give an example.

Elam is in a dome and is on a good but not stellar offense going against a team that until last monday night didnt give up a lot of TD's. Atlanta is at home and are fighting for a wildcard spot so I dont think they will get shut down but I do think they will get slowed down by Tampa which to me means plenty of 3 pointers for Elam and possibly a couple long one toward the end of the game

Akers is on a team that gets a lot of TD's going against a vunerable Browns defense that may make some stops but will give up a bunch of TD's I see a whole lot of 1 pt conversions and maybe a field goal or two.

In my league scoring is Field Goal(FG) 0-49 yards = 3 points, 50+ yards = 5 points, Extra Point(XP) 1 point

based on that I project 12 pts for Elam and 10 pts for Akers this week

Dome friendly is always a plus this time of year, its one thing you can mark off that wont hinder your kickers production(since we really cant predict FG attempts). For as long as I am alive I will roll the dice with a kicker indoors.

I see your thinking but it doesn't always turn out that way. Rob Bironas had a field day against the Lions on Thanksgiving. He had four field goals. We give bonus points in our league for longer fieldgoals and he put up 22.8 points. (including the PAT's)

any given Sunday happens and there is no way to predict it.

I check Kickermania regularly, but that's just a tool that I use with other considerations. The first is obviously weather. At this time of the year it's much more crucial than the early part of he season. I also look at how the defense sits as far as points allowed per game, and how the kicker's offense ranks in points scored per game. Attempts are big, too IMO. If a team isn't getting their kicker many opportunities, I don't want to take the chance that he'll turn it around the week I take him off the waiver wire.

If you think it's going to be that close...I factor in these:

Weather (obviously...outdoor NE/Midwest is bad)

Dome vs. open stadium

beyond environmental factors...

Does the team have a chance to make the playoffs or not. If not...sometimes the coach will just simply run some plays because they have nothing to lose...less likely to attempt the 49-50+ yarders giving up field position on a miss. Teams just borderline making the playoffs or not...in a dome...decent offense facing non-Pitt/Ravens defense are ideal. You want the defense your kicker is facing to be decent in the redzone...but not so good as to keep his team from crossing the 50 yard line once or twice in the entire game.

Historically kickers on winning teams score more than kickers on losing teams.

It is a simple way of looking at it but I would start the kicker on the team that you expect to win. If you expect both kickers to win I would look at favorable weather and which offense averages more points on the season.

Trying to predict which defense is going to stop which offense in FG range is a much more difficult proposition.

I just go by the Vegas line for the week..whichever kicker has the higher O/U line, thats usually the guy I go with..

I'd rather have a guy in a game where the O/U is 51 pts, vs a guy in a game where the O/u is just 33 pts.
