Pierre Garcon to Start ** (1 Viewer)

According to the Indy Football Report, wide receiver Pierre Garcon is expected to start on Monday night against the Dolphins.

Our View: With number-two receiver Anthony Gonzalez out up to eight weeks with a knee injury, Garcon is being called upon to pick up the slack. He'll get outside duties and Austin Collie will work in the slot. This is the second-year man's first career start and while he's not a great fantasy play, he'll get some looks on Monday and can be useful if you're light at receiver.

**Edited to add that after I followed the link to the actual article, I would guess it is not a lock he starts - more of Reggie Wayne's impression (that he will start).

The article:

Pierre Garcon likely will get his first NFL start Monday.

That’s Indianapolis Colts three-time Pro Bowl WR Reggie Wayne’s impression, at least, and if Garcon — a second-year receiver from Mount Union — indeed does start in his return to his native South Florida, Wayne said he is confident the younger player will perform well.

Wayne said he feels the same about rookie WR Austin Collie, who likely will play an extensive role as a slot receiver for a second consecutive week.

“You what’s funny? Since I’ve been here, this might be the best group as far as taking notes in the meetings,” Wayne said Saturday as the AFC South-leading Colts (1-0) prepared to play the Miami Dolphins (0-1) at Land Shark Stadium in Miami Gardens, Fla., Monday at 8:30 p.m. “If you look at them, when they’re writing in their notebooks, they’re in the back of their notebooks. That means all the pages in the front are used. The guys are really focused, taking notes.

“This is not Pop Warner. They’ll step up and make plays when they get the opportunity.”

Wayne, who caught 10 passes for 162 yards and a touchdown in 14-12 season-opening victory last Sunday, was asked if he figured defensive coordinators would focus on him with WR Anthony Gonzalez out 2-to-8 weeks with a knee injury.

“You’d better,” Wayne said with a smile. “That’s kind of how it is. Pretty much every team in the league in some form or fashion has a go-to guy. . . . If not, I’m standing here licking my chops. That comes with it. I need those young guys to step up and make some plays to take the pressure off me.”

Colts Saturday news and notes:

* Practice-squad running back Mike Hart has been running the Wildcat offense in practice this week. He had been competing for the third RB position in training camp before an ankle injury kept him out three preseason games. “He’s played the role of (Dolphins RB Ronnie) Brown for us,” Colts Head Coach Jim Caldwell said. “He’s done a nice job.”

* It’s uncertain how much WR Hank Baskett will play Monday, Colts Head Coach Jim Caldwell said. Baskett signed with the Colts Thursday to provide depth with Anthony Gonzalez out 2-to-8 weeks. “He catches on quickly,” Caldwell said. “That helps. How much you’ll see from him, I’m not certain, but maybe he will play for us in some phase.”

* Colts S Jamie Silva returned to practice Friday after missing the season opener with an abdomen injury. “We’ll see what happens at the end of the day,” Caldwell said of Silva’s chances of playing Monday.

* The Colts on Saturday released their final injury report of the week, with WR Anthony Gonzalez (knee), S Bob Sanders (knee) and TE Tom Santi (ankle) out and OT Charlie Johnson (back), CB Jerraud Powers (groin), OG Jamey Richard (shoulder), TE Gijon Robinson (back) and S Jamie Silva (abdomen) listed as questionable. Powers and Robinson were added to the report Saturday after missing practice for the first time this week. CB Marlin Jackson (Not Injury Related-Rested) and LT Tony Ugoh (NIR-Rested) missed practice Friday, but are expected to play. If Powers can’t play, Jackson likely will start at corner.

Everything points to Garcon getting the start on the outside, but this article was pretty much fluff.

No real scoop.

I don't think I would call it fluff. I mean, I respect Reggie Wayne. He is a proven product in the Indy system. It sounds as if Garcon/Collie are taking their professional responsibilities seriously. While that might not mean fantasy production immediately, it is a good sign for both Garcon and Collie. I think it will take time to find out who is more productive while Gonzalez is out, but it is a good sign that they are "already at the end of their notebooks."

Thanks SleeperPix for the post. It's cool when you hear that young players understand at least part of what it takes to be successful.

:lmao: 'Fluff' was a poor word choice on my part.It is cool for all the reasons you stated.Just doesn't really clear up/support the title of this thread.

So what's the consensus on Garcon tonight? Anybody rolling with him or do you think Peyton leans even more on Wayne and Clark? Not sure the Colts will run the ball all that well on the Dolphins so Manning might have to sling it a lot.

I got him going in 2 high stakes auction leagues. My 3rd WR's on those teams are not great, so I figured that Garcon as Indy's #2 will get his chances. I assume Miami will double R. Wayne, leaving more opportunties for the others.

Mort on ESPN just now, paraphrasing:"The Colts think the rookie, Austin Collie, can be the next Brandon Stokely, but not this year. The guy they're excited about is Pierre Garcon. They see Garcon as a bigger, more powerful Reggie Wayne."

it's not really a big deal WHO is starting . . .

last year, the Colts (as usual) let the league with 3WR formations (83 %) . . .

NOW, tonight, I expect that Clark lines up (even more than usual) as a WR, but regardless, in the Colts base package, both receivers will get plenty of snaps . . .

what an insane statement to make - and this is coming from a Colts fan - if he develops, fine, but Mort - chill with the hyperbole - and if the Colts really said it (which I doubt) then they have issues . . .

I forget if he was quoting Polian, but he was definitely quoting the Colts - he sounded surprised himself.

Looking at the numbers on Pro Football Focus.com, it looked like the Colts went almost exclusively with 3 WRs after Gonzalez was hurt with Garcon and Collie both on the field. Unless I'm not looking at the numbers correctly.

Nice little sentimental angle to Garcon's performance tonight: He's from West Palm Beach, so tonight was a homecoming that ended on a very high note.
