Pike....errrrr......St.Pierre has to be a upgrade for Steve Smith (1 Viewer)

I don't really understand why you'd start St. Pierre over Pike. At least see if you might have something with Pike, no? It's not like they're going to be respectable this season anyway, and it's doubtful St. Pierre will be there next season
Fox wants to play someone with veteran experience.. At least, that's the story I'm hearing in Charlotte
Fox is pretty much giving the franchise and the fans the finger with this move. Why not see what you have on your roster?

I am thinking that the Panthers starting qb in 2011 is either (hopefully) Luck or Locker.
Would be interesting. No doubt now that there will be a new HC and GM (I kind of thought that if they put up a run this year, they would be OK). Too bad, b/c Fox is not a bad coach, and Hurney has a nice eye for talent except when it comes to WR and drafting QBs (he did bring in Delhomme). They should have brought in a Fassel-type to work with these guys this year, but too late for that.
It goes to show you how important the backup QB is. The Panthers were 12-4 in 2008 before Delhomme just imploded in the playoffs against Arizona and he was never the same. Clearly the GM and HC were caught off-guard with no real backup plan and thats going to cost them their jobs. Anyway, I dropped smith in a 15-man roster TD heavy league too.

I'm really hoping Edwards gets some time. A crappy qb with wr eligibility would be awesome.
I am hoping the Panthers just lose out. This season has been a total cluster****. From free agency, to the draft and now the regular season its been one of the worst seasons to date. I am just praying we are in position to get Luck and then be done with the qb position for 10 years.

I'm guessing he'd rather try to win games then see what the Panthers 2011/2012 coach is going to have to work with..And I think the franchise has already given him the finger based on how the team has been managed this season.. He really hasn't had much to work with. Every move they've made (or lack of move made) has been a move to save money..

Good point, but I dont see how a journeyman qb that has been on the roster for 6 days is a better chance then someone who has been with the team since training camp. Dont get me wrong I hope they lose out but I think it is obvious what Fox is trying to do.

I agree with you. Jerry Richardson basically set Fox up to fail this season, and hasn't let him manage his players like he wants to.

He is trying to win games.
You think starting a QB who was literally a stay-at-home dad 10 days ago is trying to win games? To me, it looks like he's flipping the bird to the front office who will be showing him the door 6 weeks from now.
I don't know if Pike is ready for the job.. At least from what I hear, he isn't.... I'd think a guy who has been in the NFL a while is going to better understand the game (at NFL level) then a rookie.. Maybe Fox is just looking for a game manager so he can get back to running the ball.. I would think Pike is more apt to make mistakes then Pierre.. Based on experience..

Lot of silly things in this thread.

You guys really think Fox is entering Sunday trying to lose the game? If he is upset about the way things are going on behind the scenes then I am guessing he could just go and tell them with a few choice words what he really thinks.

It is ridiculous to think that starting St. Pierre over Pike is some sneaky move by Fox to stick it to the organization.

The Hurney comment was pure sarcasm. Of course Fox isn't trying to lose the game intentionally.

The argument that Fox is starting St.Pierre over Pike to stick it to the organization makes no sense. The organization is doing everything in its power to tank this season and get the first pick so if Fox was starting St.Pierre out of spite it would actually work right into their plans.

I think the problem with Pike is that he ran a spread offense in college and I don't think the Panthers want to go spread so the adjustment for him would be big. St.Pierre's talent is a unknown but appearently he is a smart guy who proabably has already picked up the Panthers less than extensive play book and he has been in the league for years so mentally he shouldn't get as flustered as Pike.

Remember the Jaguars used Todd Bouman off the streets a a few weeks ago and while he wasn't great he wasn't horrible either. Granted he had more NFL experience than St.Pierre but he had to learn the offense quickly as well.

Bouman had been with the Jaguars in 2007-2009.

Exactly. It makes no sense for Fox to do this move out of spite when he wants another HC job. What owner is going to want to hire a coach that intentionally torpedos his own team when things aren't going his way?

It doesnt get much worse then St Pierre.
Apparently Tony Pike would have been worse.I have a feeling Panther fans will be thinking Fox indirectly this time next year for finally allowing us to draft a franchise qb. I think with Luck the Panthers can win 8-9 games next year. The defense will still be solid, the running game will be good and the line should be full strength.

Nope.It doesnt get worse then St Pierre. It may get "more likely to get hurt" or even "needs more time to learn the game and get up to speed"... but it doesnt get worse. Not as a QB in the NFL. St Pierre doesnt belong on that field.

They're not going to draft a QB (unless it's in the middle-to-late rounds to develop a backup). The Panthers already have their QB of the future in Clausen. You can tell he's just at the beginning stages of getting his feet wet & relaxing a little bit. Clausen made tremendous strides last week & made some beautiful throws. Only the kind of throws a QB with his talent can make.

Just give the kid some time. Let him grow. At the end of next season, Carolina fans will be anxiously awaiting the 2012 season. Clausen is going to be a good NFL QB.

The Panthers are tanking this season.

Post Lockout I think the Panthers are going to make a big splash. I think Cowher is heading there and i wouldn't be surprised to see them as players in the Vick sweepstakes

I am too lazy to look it up but I would hardly be shocked if Panther fans said the same thing about Clausen last year.
Nope, not even close. Most Panther fans were not really thrilled to get Jimmy. I thought we could win 8-9 games with Moore but not too many fans I know were on cloud 9 to get Clausen. He only had one good year at ND and when you watch him play something just seems off. Plus the fact that every team passed on him once, some twice and he is/was injured. Luck and Clausen are not even in the same stratosphere.

That line doesnt even make sense. I know the bookies know more about this then we do but I think the Ravens easily score 30 on the Cats and I really cannot see the Panthers scoring more then 10.

I just dumped him for Jimmy Graham. FWIW.

I think he may go off for one or two games based on talent alone, but the opportunity/floor is so bad/low it's ridiculous. It's like Lee Evans on steroids, but with 1/2 the ceiling.

oof what a game yesterday.

My diabolical plan of the Panthers losing out and selecting Luck is coming together nicely. I cannot imagine Tony Pike being any worse the St Pierre was. There was a reason he only threw 5 passes in his career before yesterday. I dont see the panthers winning another one. Maybe the Cardinals at home, maybe.

Isnt Luck graded out as the highest prospect in like 20 years?

I dont think the Panthers will pay Cowher
No way. The local beat writers seem to think it is going to be Brian SChtoemier(sp?) or Leslie Frazier. But it most certainly will be an assistant. Cowhers tag probably starts around 7 million. Way too high, he is not worth that.

lucky if he's better than the top rookie QB last year.No way the Panthers take another QB after taking three in 2010 draft

They really only drafted 2 starters. Clausen and Pike. If Pike couldnt play yesterday that is not a good sign. I have heard from multiple people that Pike has no business being on a NFL roster. Clausen just doesnt have "it". Plus if what everyone is saying about Luck, being the best qb prospect since Elway, I dont see how they can pass on a franchise qb. Clausen just isnt very good. He had one above average year out of 3 at ND and most observers can watch him and see he is not a good qb. If what everyone is saying about Luck then they will draft him going away. Watching Luck play it is obvious he is light years ahead of Clausen. Just smoother, better arm, bigger size and just seems to have more control.

what does this mean?

Panthers have now signed Keith Null as a QB and depending on St. Pierre (sore arm) and Clausen (Concussion) he may be starting on Sunday. Pick up all defenses vs the Panthers because this is about to get uglier.

Why even draft Pike and keep him on the roster if you are picking up guys on Tuesday that could potentially start over him on the following Sunday?

On the positive side we are the lead horse in the Andrew Luck sweepstakes.

NFC South would be amazing if the Panthers got Luck. That would be Luck, Brees, Ryan and Freeman all in the same division.

I think he means that Luck will be Lucky if he is better than Sam Bradford.

Who knows but I am convinced he is better then anything we have on the roster as it stands. The talk radio guys are in love with Luck. I have watched him and he is good, but I also think Mallet and Locker are quite talented as well. Cowherd said today a package deal of Harbough and Luck will be going to the Panthers next year. That would be my ultimate football fantasy.

Any way Smith is startable this week vs. the 31st-ranked pass D (in fantasy points)?
I may actually start him in 2 leagues. 1st League

Start 3WR and a flex, have to choose from R. White, M. Thomas, S. Smith, Ford, Obomanu, Gibson and Bennett. (Bolded the 2 I'm starting for sure.)

2nd League

Start 3 WR, have to choose from Knox, Ford, S. Smith, Obomanu and B, White (This is a bad WR core)

I'm not looking for opinions, just listing who I'm likely starting Smith over.
