PIT QB Roethlisberger Told He Was "Close To Dying" (1 Viewer)

From the Footballguys News Blogger:

Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger said during an interview (with Jim Rome) on Wednesday night that he was told during his rescue after a recent motorcycle accident that he was a minute or less away from dying. "They told me that I was literally seconds, maybe a minute away from dying because I slit a vein or artery in my mouth or my throat and it was draining blood right into my stomach and luckily the paramedic noticed it and stopped it or else I would have had too much blood in my stomach," Roethlisberger said.

Damn, and here I was thinking the Steelers were trading Big Toothless Ben away to the Buffalo Bills where he'd be near death for sure or would certainly wish he was ....

I saw Roethlisberger on the local Pittsburgh news doing an interview this morning and have to say he looks great. If you had not heard about his motorcycle accident you would never know it by looking at him.

Big Ben dodged a MAJOR bullet.

I would have thought he was close to death seconds before when the car hit him. Each are  so...lucky for him.

thanks for the info datonn

Yep, that was my first thought when seeing that headline as well (aka being "close to death" before hitting the car, riding without a helmet). I didn't know about the problem of blood in the stomach until I saw the Jim Rome interview article last night.....scary.

tahnk goodness for that alert paramedic! has anyonje else seen the video clips from the rome interview yet? he really does look different. not sure if it is just temp. swelling or the reconstruction.

If I were Big Ben, Id give that paramedic season tickets for him and his family for the rest of my career.

did you see how much makeup he's been wearing for the cameras to cover up all those scars and torn flesh. and he's still like amped to go get on a motorcycle with no helmet again. and he's bragging that none of his teammates told him to give it up. if i were troy polamalu i would beat the hell out him for being so #######ed stupid and almost costing that whole team a shot to get back to the playoffs. what a moron.

i'm sure as soon as PA state government gets a chance they'll pass a law that ben Roethlisberger has to wear a helmet on a motorcycle, when in a car, on a plane, walking, etc. The Big Ben 24/7 Helmet Law they'll call it. he's like a special ed kid on the short bus he needs a helmet on all the time.

also mark my words ravens sweep pittsburgh this year. count em 2 wins via the scrubby ole champs.

A real classy post. I dunno. I thought he looked pretty good for a guy that last month smashed his face up against a car and was a minute or so from death . He does not look to me like he has a ton of makeup here: ESPN link. And this interview was almost a week ago. He is playing in a charity golf outing at Lake Tahoe right now and according to local news, the blood in his right eye is completely gone.

He is expected to be ready when training camp opens 2 weeks from today. Sounds good to me...

Five guys I knew were involved in a pretty nasty accident back in high school. While a couple got messed up pretty good, effectively ending their sport careers, the one who died was the only one who literally walked away from the accident. He was able to give the EMTs and police names, etc.

It turned out that the impact had severed some artery and he bled out internally. By the time anyone noticed that it wasn't just shock from the accident he was experiencing he was a goner.

:(

RIP Ben.

edited to add that when I began this post I didn't even realize that this guys name was Ben, too...then I posted it and read it.

 he was asked this explicitly and his answer was clear. he also said that he sometimes did ride with a helmet.

Any opinions on Big Ben refusing to do any public safety ads for helmet wearing?

Seems pretty classless to me. Your life is spared in spite of your stupidity and now yuo refuse to do a few photos for preventing this in the future? :ptts:

Maybe he does not care to come off as a hypocrite.

I somewhat agree. As a fan I just want him to play football and appreciate it when NFLers are good guys. I don't care if they have a "cause" they support. Curtis Martin pro life? I don't want that BS in the NFL world

I actually applaud his statement on that issue. There is nothing worse than “the converted” trying to “preach” against a subject that they were guilty of doing.I hardly call it classless. What about the states that ALLOW this to even be an issue ? Are they not the ones that you/we should be questioning ?

Seatbelt laws are, to my knowledge, nationwide. Why then are Helmet laws not ? I am all for individual freedom, but to me, there is no reason there should be a state that allows people to ride without head protection. That is classless and more so, irresponsible.

Just my Onion

Aaaaand with that said ...

I think Ben looks damn good, considering this happened just under 2 months ago. The Docs did an amazing job. The only real issue I see is the nose is askew, and there is slight puffiness in his face ... which went down even more from the Rome interview ... I saw him in the golf tournament, and he looked even better than he did a couple days prior
