Player Safety idea - Blow the play dead on offensive holding penalties (1 Viewer)

What percentage of the time are offensive holding penalties on a run play accepted? 95%? How bout on a pass? Pretty much the only time they aren't is if the defense gets a sack or an INT. And on sacks, they sometimes take them any way due to game situation. Not sure what the injury rate is, but seems like you could blow the play dead and save some unnecessary injuries.

Can't rule out the possibility that as the play progresses the defense may also commit a penalty (Pass Interference, Hands to the Face, Illegal Contact, Face Mask, Horse Collar, Roughing the Passer, ETC ETC) thus offsetting the original holding penalty that you're suggesting could render the play dead at the point it occurs. This would seem to give an unfair advantage to the defense in my opinion.

Interesting thought ... but I don't see it being viable.

Never thought of this, but I happen to agree with the OP. To the idea that the defense doesn't have a chance to commit a penalty themselves, I think that concern is trumped by (1) player safety and (2) the play may not have gone forward to that point without the holding.

i know they have penalties that blow the play dead pre snap but are there any penalties that blow the play dead after the snap? I don't think that happens.

Yes. Offsides on the defense when unabated to the QB (stopped for player safety reasons)
