Player Spotlight: Adrian Peterson (1 Viewer)

I think the Vikings know 2007 is a rebuilding year, and I believe they will limit AD's carries as a result(To protect the investment, so to speak). Why burn out AD when you are paying CT #1 money?150 carries675 rushing yards6 rushing TD's10 receptions100 yards 1 TDGreat dynasty pick, wouldn't touch him before round 5 in a re-draft, however.
People need to realize that Chester is NOT getting #1 money!!
"Taylor, the backup in Baltimore to Jamal Lewis, signed a four-year, $14.1 million contract that includes $5.6 million in bonuses"From USA today....We can debate what "#1 money" is, but I think Chester is being compensated nicely, compared to most NFL RB's...In other words, most backup RB's make $350,000+ per, and Chester is obviously getting a tad bit more than that...

I think it is interesting that no one on staff has AD ranked higher than 20.I have not seen projections from other staff concerning this except for Dodds. He has the Vikings doing this:500 pass attempts 421 rushing attempts (including 5 "others") so that means 921 total plays. In 2006 the only teams to run 921 total plays or less were SF and the Bills. So I can only conclude that all of the staff see the Vikings offense being CRAP this year. And I can understand this position. However when one looks at the Viking offense from last year.. was it any good? Is this year really that much worse? To the tune of 104 total plays worse?I don't really think so. And I also think AD is going to end up much higher than RB 20 as well as there not being a 50/50 RBBC type situation between AD and Taylor.
First A.Peterson is a stud, no dispute with me. Breaking the Top 20 is going to be really tough. The Vikings Offense will be one of the lowest scoring in the league this year, there is no reason to believe they wont. The Running game usually requires either a Shut Down Defense or an credible air attack to keep the opposing D honest. Minni has neither one of these. The O-Line is pretty good and the D is average, the overall offense is down right basement. Throw in the fact he will split carries, his shoulder is iffy and well, Stud and All he is still just a rookie, adjusting to the NFL is a big task for any College player.. There are only a few rookie RB's who came in and smoked the league, the right situation, talent and oppertunity have to be there. So FBG's rankings are generous as is. If he studs out this year and you happend to be the guy in your league to have taken him in the later rounds, then good on ya.

With the way the salary cap has changed in the past year, that is a great salary for a backup running back, IMO. Bobby Wade just signed a 5 year, $15 million deal. You could also look at the deal Kevin Curtis got and what Burleson got last season (which he restructured this season). When WRs are making that type of change, I think having a proven RB locked up for a few years at that price isn't too bad - plus a bunch of it was paid him last season, so I don't believe he is being paid "starting RB money."

I'll be the first to admit that Chester Taylor isn't a great running back. He's a good running back though who averaged over 100 total yards a game last season. There are only a handful of rbs in the league who can lay claim to that distinction. He proved that he can handle the workload (he did complain of "body soreness" later in the season) by averaging over 20 carries a game. He played pretty well on a team that was just abysmal offensively.

While Adrian Peterson may have more raw talent than Chester Taylor (which remains to be seen to be honest) he doesn't necessarily have the skills and the experience of Taylor. NFL coaches are loyal to a fault when it comes to productive veteran players so I hardly see a scenario where Chester Taylor isn't a factor of all this season. If I had to bet on who the better fantasy player is this season in terms of value and overall production I have to go with Taylor.

I don't think that where a player was drafted matters as to how he will be utilized. If you remember in 2005 3 running backs were drafted with the 1st 5 picks (Carnell Williams, Ronnie Brown, Cedric Benson). Williams was the only one of the three to be the primary ball carrier for his team during his rookie season. What that means for Adrian Peterson is that he's going to have to earn his spot as the starting running back regardless of his draft position. It won't be given to him.
I watched those 3 RBs from 2005 extensively in college as well as AP. And for me AP is obviously better than all 3. Also, as far as learning to play at the NFL level there is no position where the transition can be made more rapidly than at RB. AP is a hard worker and has already improved his pass blocking and receiving. I've no doubt he'll continue to improve, he's just a high character guy. You don't bust your butt to return play in a bowl game when you're a surefire first round pick if you're not.

:bump:I am wondering if this still is the mindset. There has been some recent talk about taking AD @ 3.01?? I am having a hard time with that, but would consider him in the 4th now.

There really hasn't been a whole lot lately that's come out of training camp about AP. He missed a few practices with a hip pointer.Someone is swinging for the fences if they're taking him at 3.01. They may end up with a top 5 back (which he will be some day soon) or a guy that's in a true RBBC. I wish I could tell you something different, but there's just been no further indication of how the Vikes are going to split the carries this year. :goodposting:

where is AP going in semi keeper leagues?
Don't know about semi-keeper leagues but he's going in the 55-60 range in most of the drafts I've seen. So he's a fifth-round pick generally. The question would be for those who really like him: Would you take him in the fourth if you didn't think you'd get him in the fifth?

I don't want to turn this into an AC question, but for those in a keep 3 league for example and don't have to keep 3 and get that round's pick, where does he go? I have the first pick in the third.

Just wondering if you think the Vikings have an average defense still?

Peterson is the most talented runner I've ever seen in college. He's got incredible power and speed and great vision and balance. The only concern is health and the pathetic players at the skill positions in Minnesota. For those reasons, I think his TD total will be a bit low relative to his production, but he's gonna rack up the yards. He's just a special talent. Before training camp closes, he'll be able to do everything Chester Taylor can do, but he'll do it better and he'll be able to do things no other back in the league can do.304 carries1459 yards (4.8 ypc)10 TD30 receptions228 yards (7.6 ypr)1 TD
Awesome job! What's scary is that you BY FAR had the highest projections for him, and that still will likely be way too low.

Hard to project any higher for a rookie really, but yeah, he looks to be smashing the projections I had for him. I knew he was special, but so far its been truely impressive.
