2007 Player Spotlight Series

Over the course of the offseason, we will be evaluating a multitude of players at every fantasy position. One such way we go about that is through the Player Spotlight series. Think of the Spotlights as a permanent record on some of the more intriguing players for the upcoming season. Each Spotlight will be featured in an article on the main website.

Thread Topic: Arnaz Battle & Ashley Lelie, WRs, San Francisco 49ers

Focus commentary on the player in question, and your expectations for said player
Back up your expectations in whatever manner you deem appropriate; avoid posts that simply say "I hate him" or "He's the best"
To be included in the final synopsis and consensus outlook, you MUST provide projections for the playerProjections should include (at a minimum):

For QBs: Passing Yards, Passing TDs, Ints, Rush Yards, Rush TDs
For RBs: Rushes, Rushing Yards, Rush TDs, Receptions, Receiving Yards, Receiving TDs
For WRs & TEs: Receptions, Receiving Yards, Receiving TDsBest of Luck and ENJOY!

I like Battle as an NFL WR but he isnt worth much as a fantasy WR. He will come up with a bunch of big 3rd down receptions and will have 1 big 2 TD game but otherwise I dont see him being rosterworthy. Lelie has the potential to bust out but I just dont see it. Hes always dinged, runs bad routes, drops everything, and doesnt seem to work hard enough. Basically he thinks hes better than he is. I dont think hes draftworthy either. If Jackson gets hurt (which many expect) then I think Battle becomes more valuable as Lelie is nothing but a deep threat.

Battle:

45 rec, 700 yds, 4 tds

Lelie:

32 rec, 600 yds, 2 tds

San Francisco's WRs had major changes following the 06 season. Antonio Bryant was excused and Darrell Jackson and Ashley Lelie have arrived. DJax brings a lot of optimism with his recent performancs, but a touch of pessimism with his injury issues. DJax has performed well recently, except wheh he was hurt, finishing 9th, 14th, 63rd, and 13th last year even as he missed three games. If healthy, he will be the obvious WR #1 and with Gore a nice receiver out of the backfield and V Davis in his second year at TE, whoever is next will not be that productive. The opportunity for Battle, Lelie, Gilmore, or rookie Jason Hill will only come with injuries to one or more of the top three. And if its Gore, then all bets are off as the 49ers will lose their offensive balance.

Among these two I much prefer Battle, who is in his 5th season in Frisco and comes off his best season with 87 targets 59 catches, 686 yds and 3 TDs. I think his familiarity in the system and with Alex Smith trumps Lelie's speed which is all he has. Lelie has a career reception percentage of 50.4% and had 47.7% in 05 and a dismal 41.2% last year in Atlanta. I give Gilmore and the rookie Hill a better chance at production than Lelie.

Battle 70 targets 47 catches 550 yards (11.7 ypc) and 3 TDs

Lelie 45 targets 23 catches 373 yards (16.2 ypc) and 2 TDs
