Player Spotlight: Carson Palmer (1 Viewer)

2008 Player Spotlight Series

One of Footballguys best assets is our message board community. The Shark Pool is, in our view, the best place on the internet to discuss, debate and analyze all things fantasy football. In what's become an annual tradition, the Player Spotlight series is a key part of the preseason efforts. As many of you know, we consider the Player Spotlight threads the permanent record for analyzing the fantasy prospects of the player in question. Last year, we published more than 140 offensive spotlights covering the vast majority of expected skill position starters. This year will be no different.

Each week we will post a list of players to be discussed. Those threads will remain open for the entire preseason, and should be a central point to discussion expectations for the player in question. Importantly, analysis done in the first week of posting will be part of the permanent record in two ways. 1) At the end of the week, we will tally the projections into a consensus. 2) We will select a number of pull quotes from forum contributors who make a compelling statement or observation. Both the projections and pull quotes will be part of a published article on the main website.

Thread Topic: Carson Palmer, QB, Cincinnati Bengals

Player Page Link: Carson Palmer Player Page

Each article will include:

Detailed viewpoint from a Footballguys staff member
Highlighted member commentary from the message board threads
FBG Projections
Consensus Member ProjectionsThe Rules

In order for this thread to provide maximum value, we ask that you follow a few simple guidelines:

Focus commentary on the player in question, and your expectations for said player
Back up your expectations in whatever manner you deem appropriate; avoid posts that simply say "I hate him" or "He's the best"
To be included in the final synopsis and consensus outlook, you MUST provide projections for the playerProjections should include (at a minimum):

For QBs: Passing Yards, Passing TDs, Ints, Rush Yards, Rush TDs
For RBs: Rushes, Rushing Yards, Rush TDs, Receptions, Receiving Yards, Receiving TDs
For WRs & TEs: Receptions, Receiving Yards, Receiving TDsNow let's get on with the conversation! We look forward to your contributions and let me offer a personal thanks in anticipation of the great debate and analysis.

ugh...

Carson Palmer is a special talent at QB. He has two special receivers with Chad Johnson and Houshmandzadeh. So, why am I down on Palmer? Character issues just seem to be imploding the Bengals organization. Buyer beware...

Carson Palmer is an elite NFL QB. He has finished 1st, 4th, and 9th in the most recent three seasons. His ints climbed last season and this year, there have been many discussions on the upcoming Bengal implosion. I don't think that will happen. I think that one of the two rookie WRs will fill in adequately for the loss of Chris Henry. I think that TJH and Chad will both have their typical stellar fantasy seasons. I also think that the OL will be improved from last year. Cincinatti will rebound offensively, but their defense will continue to struggle.

Carson Palmer has averaged right at 7.5 ypa over those same three seasons and his attempts have gone up each year. I think that the atttempts will drop slightly, but the effectiveness will improve.

Carson Palmer 368 comp 530 att 68% 4050 yds 7.5 ypa 28 TDs 14 ints 40 yds rush 0 TDs

Two years ago Palmer entered the season a little dinged up, started off slow and ended the season better than how he started it. Heading into last season, I noted the slight improvement over the course of the season and figured he'd be in for a big season last year. Although his passing yardage was up, his Td's were down and his INT's were up.

I ask my why? Did his skills deteriorate? Was he possibly hurt, what was the difference?

The difference wasn't that he was hurt, but other key players on the Cincinnati team hurt their chances of being a better football team. For one, the loss of Rudi Johnson early on hurt the Bengals offense. Without the threat of Rudi, defenses didn't respect the running game of Cinci.

Further injuries to the Cinci defense, specifically the linebackers allowed teams to pick that defense apart. The Bengals found themselves in a lot of holes and although you'd think that could translate into a lot of high scoring games, it wasn't as high as you'd think for the amount of points they gave up. Palmer was forced into throwing interceptions as defenses could just rush the QB in most of their games.

I am finding myself less than confident with the Cinci coaching staff. It bothers me that he built his name on having one of the greatest defenses in Baltimore and all these years in Cinci he's got a defense that's less than average and last year downright poor. I expect a few more Td's this season but Palmer again may not live up to his usually high ADP.

4075 yards, 28 td's and 20 int's

Stewie will show up with his 'Garrard is better than Palmer' rant in 3...2...1...

Palmer is an elite QB, he's consistently the 3rd/4th QB taken in every fantasy draft, intermingled with Manning/Brady/Romo..

you have to think that one of these seasons, Cincy is going to finally put it all together and win 10/11 games..Chad Johnson should be on fire , forging his way to a new contract or an off-season trade..either way, it could be a Pro Bowl season for CJ..TJ is probably the best #2 WR in the NFL, and there's no reason to think that will stop this season, esp if Cincy struggles to run the ball with their hodge-podge collection of RBs..

IMO, Chris Henry was the cog in the Bengal's offensive machine that made it so explosive. His speed, height and leaping ability compare favorably to anyone this side of Randy Moss. As a WR3, he was lethal. Without him in the lineup, the offense just wasn't the same. Then, with only Chad and TJ as weapons (Rudi was injured as well) defenses could just play Cover 2 and contain the offense. I don't see any other receiver on our roster that can do what Henry did.

On the contrary, I like the addition of a pass-catching TE like Utecht. And if Chris Perry can get on the field with the same explosiveness from a couple years ago, there are 2 playmakers that can open up this offense and get them back to a top 5 offensive season. If these don't pan out, then I think the offense peters out with Palmer's #s suffering.

I think losing Rudi made more of a diff than losing a WR3, even a good one. CIN still has good weapons and I think (if they're smart anyway) they'll use Watson more, who IMO is extremely underrated and did VERY well when given the chance, running well and showing real receiving ability also. I like Palmer as a good "bargain" move this year - in auctions I'm seeing him go for low teens if that.

In terms of physical tools and passing ability Palmer is right on par with Peyton Manninig. He's got an elite receiver in Chad Johnson and another pro bowl calliber pass catcher in Houshmandzedah. The last 3 years, he's thrown at least 509 Passes, at least 3800 Yards and at least 26 TDs. He's averaged 4000 Yards, 28.7 TDs over that span. The opportunity is obviously going to be there, and he's delivered on it.

The running game can't be as bad as last year. Rudi's had the offseason to rest and recover. Perry will finally enter camp healthy, Watson and Dorsey provide some nice explosivness out of the backfield. The defense can't be as bad as last year either. At a point, they had no healthy linebackers on the team, this year they should have healthy ones that know their scheme. They won't have to pass as much, and defenses won't be able to key on the pass as they had been doing last year.

327/515

4018 Yards

30 TDs

13 INTs

I wouldn't be at all surprised to see him exceed these numbers and end up as QB1.

Their offense struggled for many reasons. Palmer faced more pressure, the running game was down, and Chad and Carson made more mistakes.

I'm bumping him down for now. Chad and TJ officially have me worried, and I think re-signing Henry was a mistake (I'm in the camp that he'll get busted again). Caldwell is hurt, Maxwell is hurt. None of the other guys had even made an impression fighting for the WR3 spot, let alone filling in for CJ and TJ.
