Player Spotlight: Clinton Portis (1 Viewer)

When looking at Portis' numbers last year, something that jumped out at me.

In the first half of the season, Portis had 620 rushing yards (77.5 avg) and 4tds. In those same games, Brunell attempted 255 passes (avg of 31/game) for 1781 yards (222 per game) and 12 tds.

In the 2nd half of the season, Portis had 896 rushing yards (112 avg) and 7tds. In those same games, Brunell attempted 199 passes (avg of 24/game) for 1269 yards (158 per game) and 11 tds (4 in one game vs Dallas).

So, in the 2nd half of the season Brunell threw less and they relied on Portis more, and finished the season with 5 wins against STL, ARZ, DAL, NYG, and PHI.

Just wanted to put that out there for those that are tweaking projections and like this sort of info.

Skeptics will tell you that that was due to Brunell's decline over the course of the season, but I think you've hit the nail on the head. Portis asked to shoulder the load and Gibbs let him. The o-line, too, wanted things that way. Note that this was made even more effective by Moss's emergence during the first part of the year which forced defenses to account for him. Brunell did not wear down. He was at the top of his game in that second Philly game, ad libbing, scrambling when he needed to, zipping passes, etc. He was injured early in the subsequent Giants game with a knee hyperextension IIRC that he never fully recovered from, and as we saw in 2004, if Brunell has gimpy legs, then he simply can't throw the ball well at all.

320 - 325CAR / 1500 - 1550YD / 10 - 12TD rushing

40REC / 320YD / 1TD receivin

1-3COMP / 20YD / 1TD passing

320 carries, 1472 yards, 18 rushing TDs.

35 receptions, 420 yards, 3 receiving TDs.

Thats right, 21 TDs.

RB 2 1 this year, right behind ahead of LJ.

I realize that this might seem a bit bold for many of you, but Al Saunders isn't only designing Washington's offense this year, he's calling the plays too. And Al Saunders loves to get his star RB into the endzone. Portis is just as talented as any RB Saunders has worked with before, and this year will be just like every other year... the guys who own an Al Saunders' RB are real freakin happy.
Fixed. And I don't own Portis in any league....Never have....But I'm a believer that he is the #1 RB this year barring injury....

Yeah, my original post was before the Road retirement. I currently have Portis at the top of my cheat sheet.ETA: I don't own Portis in any league either, but will do what I can to acquire him.

I think you meant "at the top of his game in that second Dallas game". The Philly game was after the Giants game in which he was injured and Ramsey came in. Dec 4 @St. Louis Won 24-9 Dec 11 @Arizona Won 17-13 Dec 18 Dallas Won 35-7 Dec 24 N.Y. Giants Won 35-20 Jan 1 @Philadelphia Won 31-20

Everyones got their opinions and are entiltled to em...Anyone who would have said S Smith would end up the #1 WR last year would have got alot of  I for one think that Portis will finish top 3, and it wouldnt surprise me to see him finish as RB1. In his first 4 seasons he has finished RB4, RB5, RB11, and RB6. Two years ago in Washington, he hit what I believe is his floor, but has yet to reach his ceiling. He jumped from RB11 to RB6 last year, and theres good reason to believe that trend will continue with Saunders on board considering his past use of RBs and the amount of TDs they score.

Im firmly aboard the Portis train and may take him at pick 3 overall.

Why would a difference of one draft spot lead to a  ? In my book there's no obvious #1. Alexander lost his best o-lineman and losing Super Bowl teams don't have good track records; LJ has line problems and has a new coaching staff that replaced the offensive mind behind their offense; LT's got a brand new QB and has had injury problems for the first time in his career. Portis has just as much of a shot at #1 as do those guys, right?

I agree with ya. Portis is just as safe as the Big 3. Every one of them has slight question marks, so they all have a bit of risk. Portis has been consistant save for his 1st season with Washington 2 years ago. I dont see him falling off any - I see him improving over his last years numbers, especially his TDs.edit 8-28-06: my how things can change so quickly.

I'm on the Portis hype train. I drew the #4 pick in both of my local $ leagues, and was unhappy until getting deep into the research. Now, after doing my homework on all of the 1st round backs, I think the #4 slot is gold. I'll be grabbing Portis in both leagues, and then selecting Gates on the way back down, and hope to grab a Dunn/Bush/Rhodes in the early third.

Portis + Gates = Great start
