Player Spotlight: D.J. Hackett (1 Viewer)

2008 Player Spotlight Series

One of Footballguys best assets is our message board community. The Shark Pool is, in our view, the best place on the internet to discuss, debate and analyze all things fantasy football. In what's become an annual tradition, the Player Spotlight series is a key part of the preseason efforts. As many of you know, we consider the Player Spotlight threads the permanent record for analyzing the fantasy prospects of the player in question. Last year, we published more than 140 offensive spotlights covering the vast majority of expected skill position starters. This year will be no different.

Each week we will post a list of players to be discussed. Those threads will remain open for the entire preseason, and should be a central point to discussion expectations for the player in question. Importantly, analysis done in the first week of posting will be part of the permanent record in two ways. 1) At the end of the week, we will tally the projections into a consensus. 2) We will select a number of pull quotes from forum contributors who make a compelling statement or observation. Both the projections and pull quotes will be part of a published article on the main website.

Thread Topic: D.J. Hackett, WR, Carolina Panthers

Player Page Link: D.J. Hackett Player Page

Each article will include:

Detailed viewpoint from a Footballguys staff member
Highlighted member commentary from the message board threads
FBG Projections
Consensus Member ProjectionsThe Rules

In order for this thread to provide maximum value, we ask that you follow a few simple guidelines:

Focus commentary on the player in question, and your expectations for said player
Back up your expectations in whatever manner you deem appropriate; avoid posts that simply say "I hate him" or "He's the best"
To be included in the final synopsis and consensus outlook, you MUST provide projections for the playerProjections should include (at a minimum):

For QBs: Passing Yards, Passing TDs, Ints, Rush Yards, Rush TDs
For RBs: Rushes, Rushing Yards, Rush TDs, Receptions, Receiving Yards, Receiving TDs
For WRs & TEs: Receptions, Receiving Yards, Receiving TDsNow let's get on with the conversation! We look forward to your contributions and let me offer a personal thanks in anticipation of the great debate and analysis.

hackett's a nice enough young talent, but i'm just not seeing where any noteworthy fantasy numbers for him are coming from this year.

as the 3rd WR option on what looks to be a miserable passing offense, i think he'll be very lucky to replicate his best season totals from 2 years ago.

40 catches for about 500 yards sounds about right to me. the absolue best case scenario i see would be, delhomme making a miraculous recovery, muhsin getting hurt, allowing hackett to do about what keyshawn did in '06 (70/800/4).

i don't imagine he'll be on any of my teams.

:blackdot: All reports so far regarding Delhomme and his recovery have been very positive. Also, Moose is not automatically WR #2. He and Hackett will compete for that spot. Training camp starts at the end of the week for the Panthers.

Carted off the field for a toe injury. Is there a bigger #### in the NFL?

The Rock Hill Herald reports it is unlikely that Carolina Panthers WR D.J. Hackett will play a full 16-game season. He's spent a lot of time on a bike this camp, and when he practiced Wednesday morning, he was hauled off on a cart with a toe injury.

8 games 34-420 2 TD's, fulltime slot on training room table.

I have to say that I found it interesting that the Redskins, who needed a WR before they drafted two, declined to sign Hackett despite his visit before the draft and despite the fact that Zorn was there and could have theoretically used a veteran WR already well-versed in his offense. It wasn't like Hackett was too expensive as a FA either. I just wonder whether Zorn declined to sign him because he knew that he wasn't tough or durable enough from their days in Seattle together.

The main roadblock between Hackett and the Redskins had to do with the role he was being offered in the Offense, which was similar to what he was doing in Seattle when everyone was healthy - a complementary role designed to 'create space' for Portis, Cooley, SMoss and Randle El in 3 WR sets. They didn't view him as a threat to challenge Randle El for a starting job. Carolina, with little else in the way of competition, offered him a chance to be the starter lined up opposite Steve Smith in 2 WR sets, and a bigger role in the overall offense, which he chose.

As with most things I post in regards to the Redskins, I apologise for not being able to provide either a link or a verifiable source. Bloom and some other folks around here who've known me for a while can vouch for the fact that I have friends working in both the Team and Business sides of the Redskins equation. I can only offer what I've heard firsthand - if folks choose to believe it or not, it's up to them.

:goodposting: nittanylion doesn't mess around. Ignore him at your own risk.

:confirmed:Thanks for the insight there, nl. I hadn't heard that explanation.

Hackett wasn't carted off the playing field. He was carted to the locker room from the sidelines, just like Lucas was carted to the locker room from the sidelines after having his nose broken. It's protocol. That article is misleading. Hackett has not spent a lot of time on a bike this camp. He hurt his toe on Wednesday, and Fox said he didn't think it was anything serious, but he was holding him out as a precaution. Before Wednesday, he had been having a very good camp. I don't know if he practiced today or not. He will be starting in Steve Smith's place to open the season, so there is no reason to push a sore toe for a preseason game.

*todays (friday) update:

Notes, observations from Friday morning's practice:

-- Coach John Fox wouldn't say how serious receiver D.J. Hackett's foot injury is, except that it was a "setback" and that Hackett was "day to day." Hackett hasn't practiced, in fact hasn't even been with the team on the field, the past three days. "He was having a real good camp," said Fox. "But this is something we can work through."

Anybody or homers have any up to date news with Hackett? Since Smith is suspended, will Jarrett be across from Muhammed, or will Hackett be ready to play with his toe/foot injury?

I heard he won't be travelling with the team to Pittsburgh for the last preseason game. Not a good sign, but they say he could still be ready for week 1.

Thanks, simey. It seems like, if guys stay healthy, this offense should be solid. Wimer mentioned the toe in the audible podcast, but didn't have any more to add really. Has he been out completely for the last 3 wks?

What happened to this guy?

I know Muhsin came in and took over the starting job...but absolutely no production?

What is his outlook for the future?

They also have Dwayne Jarrett...does that make him expendable?

Thanks

I dealt this guy in the offseason. My general rule is, if you can't make an impact in 3 years in the NFL, the odds of you ever busting out are pretty slim. Then I heard the redskins offered him the league min 1 year contract. So Zorn who knows him, tossed him an awful awful contract. All signs that were he was grossly overrated and pretty much a complete joke. No one wanted the guy, he signed for peanuts with the Panthers. I'll also say that I usually give guys at least 2-3 years, see Roddy White. But after that 3rd year, I pretty much dump them. (Did the same with Drew Carter, lots of hype, no production.) I just don't think Hackett is that good. Toss in lots of injuries, he's a WR3/4/5 on NFL teams probably the rest of his career.

I generally agree with you...I dealt Hackett + 2008 1st round pick for Randy Moss.....that one turned out very well.
