Player Spotlight: Dallas Clark (1 Viewer)

2008 Player Spotlight Series

One of Footballguys best assets is our message board community. The Shark Pool is, in our view, the best place on the internet to discuss, debate and analyze all things fantasy football. In what's become an annual tradition, the Player Spotlight series is a key part of the preseason efforts. As many of you know, we consider the Player Spotlight threads the permanent record for analyzing the fantasy prospects of the player in question. Last year, we published more than 140 offensive spotlights covering the vast majority of expected skill position starters. This year will be no different.

Each week we will post a list of players to be discussed. Those threads will remain open for the entire preseason, and should be a central point to discussion expectations for the player in question. Importantly, analysis done in the first week of posting will be part of the permanent record in two ways. 1) At the end of the week, we will tally the projections into a consensus. 2) We will select a number of pull quotes from forum contributors who make a compelling statement or observation. Both the projections and pull quotes will be part of a published article on the main website.

Thread Topic: Dallas Clark, TE, Indianapolis Colts

Player Page Link: Dallas Clark Player Page

Each article will include:

Detailed viewpoint from a Footballguys staff member
Highlighted member commentary from the message board threads
FBG Projections
Consensus Member ProjectionsThe Rules

In order for this thread to provide maximum value, we ask that you follow a few simple guidelines:

Focus commentary on the player in question, and your expectations for said player
Back up your expectations in whatever manner you deem appropriate; avoid posts that simply say "I hate him" or "He's the best"
To be included in the final synopsis and consensus outlook, you MUST provide projections for the playerProjections should include (at a minimum):

For QBs: Passing Yards, Passing TDs, Ints, Rush Yards, Rush TDs
For RBs: Rushes, Rushing Yards, Rush TDs, Receptions, Receiving Yards, Receiving TDs
For WRs & TEs: Receptions, Receiving Yards, Receiving TDsNow let's get on with the conversation! We look forward to your contributions and let me offer a personal thanks in anticipation of the great debate and analysis.

No way will he repeat the TD totals of a year ago. He likely will be drafted 2-3 rounds ahead of where his actual value should be at.

48 rec, 550 yds, 7 TD

I think Clark is a very risky pick this year. Only Reggie Wayne is a sure thing among Colts receivers. What the pecking order after Wayne will be is a complete mystery because no one know what Marvin Harrison will be this year, and no one knows about who really will step up at the #4 WR spot or really the #2 TE spot (though Tamme is the most likely in terms of receptions - but since blocking is a big weakness...how much would he play).

Dallas Clark seemed to gain the most opportunity with Marvin Harrison's injury. He had by far the most targets of his career last season. If Harrison is diminished again or finished he should still play more of a role for the Colts offense. He probably won't get 11 touchdowns next season but considering who his qb is he should still get plenty.

I believe I read that Tamme blocks well enough to play in 2 TE sets. I  Tamme, but I'm also a huge UK fan :goodposting:I agree with Clark being a risky pick, but there is no doubt about how much Manning trusts him. To me that lessens the risk.

Dallas Clark prior to 07 had been a playoff stud that always failed to live up to the promise of this big post-season games. He definitely grabbed a bigger slice of the pie in Marvin's absense, but will that continue into 08. His ADP currently is TE6 and 69 overall, immediately after Cooley at 67 and well before Heap at 88 and Davis at 92. Let's look at his career stats. Notice that he has never played all 16 games.

03 - 10 gms 42 targets 29 catches (69%) for 340 yds 11.7 ypc and 1 TD TE25

04 - 15 gms 36 targets 25 catches (69%) for 423 yds 16.9 ypc and 5 TD TE11

05 - 15 gms 52 targets 37 catches (71%) for 488 yds 13.2 ypc and 4 TD TE13

06 - 12 gms 58 targets 30 catches (52%) for 367 yds 12.2 ypc and 4 TD TE15

07 - 15 gms 101 targets 58 catches (53%) for 616 yds 10.6 ypc and 11 TD TE5

Those last two percentage catch don't look so good. The outlook sure looks risky for the TE6 that he has only had over 60 targets once, only had over 500 yards once and only had over 5 TDs once. If the younger Colts WR catch on or if Marvin returns, does he lose opportunities? Will Domanick Rhodes be given a lot of those dump off routes instead of Clark? I think that is very likely.

Dallas Clark 78 targets 44 catches (56%) for 528 yards 12.0 ypc and 5 TDs

Clark has failed to live up to his lofty status when he was drafted..He looked like he was going to be the next big thing at TE, but he's been nothing but mediocre.

48/576/3

I guess you were asleep last yr... when Clark turned into TE/Slot WR.50+ / about 600 / 7 TDs

My major concern is Clarks injuries... head injuries are very bad in the NFL; shorterns the career.

It is hard to blame Clark for the low # of catches in light of the Colts having had Marvin (one of the best WR's in all of football over the past 5 years) and Wayne (like Housh, with #1 production in a #2 position), Edge (great pass catching back, now Addai and AGonz to compete with. Marvin has "hit the wall" so his 100+ catches (how many passes thrown to him in total?) are now up for grabs. I think Marv will get some, AGonz will get some, and Clark will continue to get "his".

I don't expect 11 TD catches again this year, but 700 yards and 8 TD catches seem like a real possibility with Manning slinging the ball.

Clark is super talented, and on a great offense, but they've never used him before last year. Once Harrison went down, he was called upon and stepped up. He knew the offense, and was able to perform. Now, Eiteher Harrison returns, or Gonzalez steps into the WR2 role with a year of the offense under his belt. It certainly seems reasonable Clark returns to the guy from 2 years back.

44 Receptions

541 Yards

6 TDs
