Player Spotlight: Deuce McAllister (1 Viewer)

2008 Player Spotlight Series

One of Footballguys best assets is our message board community. The Shark Pool is, in our view, the best place on the internet to discuss, debate and analyze all things fantasy football. In what's become an annual tradition, the Player Spotlight series is a key part of the preseason efforts. As many of you know, we consider the Player Spotlight threads the permanent record for analyzing the fantasy prospects of the player in question. Last year, we published more than 140 offensive spotlights covering the vast majority of expected skill position starters. This year will be no different.

Each week we will post a list of players to be discussed. Those threads will remain open for the entire preseason, and should be a central point to discussion expectations for the player in question. Importantly, analysis done in the first week of posting will be part of the permanent record in two ways. 1) At the end of the week, we will tally the projections into a consensus. 2) We will select a number of pull quotes from forum contributors who make a compelling statement or observation. Both the projections and pull quotes will be part of a published article on the main website.

Thread Topic: Deuce McAllister, RB, New Orleans Saints

Player Page Link: Deuce McAllister Player Page

Each article will include:

Detailed viewpoint from a Footballguys staff member
Highlighted member commentary from the message board threads
FBG Projections
Consensus Member ProjectionsThe Rules

In order for this thread to provide maximum value, we ask that you follow a few simple guidelines:

Focus commentary on the player in question, and your expectations for said player
Back up your expectations in whatever manner you deem appropriate; avoid posts that simply say "I hate him" or "He's the best"
To be included in the final synopsis and consensus outlook, you MUST provide projections for the playerProjections should include (at a minimum):

For QBs: Passing Yards, Passing TDs, Ints, Rush Yards, Rush TDs
For RBs: Rushes, Rushing Yards, Rush TDs, Receptions, Receiving Yards, Receiving TDs
For WRs & TEs: Receptions, Receiving Yards, Receiving TDsNow let's get on with the conversation! We look forward to your contributions and let me offer a personal thanks in anticipation of the great debate and analysis.

Hasn't completed a full 16-game schedule since 2003. Doesn't appear to have much value at all.

Thomas is the likely candidate to be the main ball carrier for the Saints this season..

McAllister:

80/304/1

Deuce hasn't been able to muster up playing an entire season in about 5 years. He's a tough guy but his bruising running style has taken a toll on his body and it's hard at 30 years of age to think he's going to ever be the kind of player he was 3 or 4 years ago, especially with the other talent they have at RB on the same team. During the right situations he can be effective and when healthy, he'll still be given the opportunities to get goaline Td's.

500 yards and 6 td's with 10 receptions for 100 yards

What's to be confused about? Deuce is 30 and running on a bionic knee, Bush has proven he is incapable of being an effective between the tackles runner. Enter, Pierre.
Stranger things have happened, but I wouldn't exactly hold your breath. A good deep sleeper, but no more. I think McAllister is done so I could see an RBBC between Bush and him, which is far, far more likely.

Deuce McAllister is one of my favorite players over the years. Stand up guy who does things the right way without much talk and he is a solid community guy. He was awesome in his 2nd and 3rd seasons finishing as RB6 and RB7. Slipped to RB 17 in his 4th year and had severe injuries in two of the last three seasons, but finished as RB 13 in 06, the year the Saints were the surprise of the NFL.

You read absolutely nothing positive on the boards this summer regarding Deuce and so I was surprised to see his ADP at RB37 and 93 overall. I was suspecting it to be much lower. I would not advise him being drafted that highly unless he shows in the preseason that he is recovered and ready to go in game one. However, regardless of how he shows in preseason, hewould be a guy that I would target very late. If he plays, he will be effective and he is VER IMPORTANT to the Saints, because he provides them power in the running game down the middle. That helps Brees and the passing game greatly. Hard to project until you see if he can go though. I'll project him as if he is ready to go in game one.

Deuce McAllister 200 carries 800 yards 4.0 ypc 20 catches 140 yards and 10 TDs

Pierre Thomas has one heck of a game, but it's hard to know if Deuce or Bush wouldn't have had that same game in that spot. I'm not convinced by 1 game that Thomas is going to take on a significant role in this offense. The saints bring one of the best offenses in the league, 2 years ago, Deuce brought toughness to a very finesse team. If his knee is right, he can do the same again this year. The offense started off slow last year because he wasn't there to pound the ball up the middle to keep defenses from stacking for the pass, I think they'll start off this year pounding it with him, provided he's healthy.

182 Rushes

728 Yards

7 TDs

27 Receptions

182 Yards

Going in the 8th or 9th round, he could represent great value as a 4th RB

Obviously everything depends on coming back again from a torn up knee. If he does what he did in 2006 he will be a huge steal. So he is worth a late round flier no question.

Based on 16 games and coming back at least 90% from his second knee injury:

200 carries

800 yards

9 TD's

Surprised no mention of this yet but I'm not even sure he's guaranteed a roster spot at this point. I'm a big fan of his and as a Saint's fan wish he could come back and play at his previous levels but I just don't see that as possible. He's just not someone I'll end up with unless he drops WAY WAY down.

I thought he restructured his deal to stay with the team.Would be pretty crappy to restructure and then still say see ya.As it goes though, business is business.

This is from rotoworld:"Deuce McAllister took a $2.2 million cut in pay to stay with New Orleans. He'll make $2.4 million if he's on the Week 1 roster and possibly another $1 million through incentives. McAllister also restructured his contract for the 2009 season. He now has a $2 million roster bonus due next offseason, forcing the Saints to make a decision on him again in 2009."From what I understood, the paycut he took was to avoid being cut back then as he was due a roster signing bonus some time in April and the Saints weren't going to pay it. But, I think all it did was buy him time and show what he could still do through the offseason and training camp. But, there's nothing that would keep him from being cut by week 1 if they felt he wasn't going to be any help this year AFAIK.

Also, he's not just coming back from his 2nd ACL injury/surgery, but he had microfracture surgery that he's recovering from as well.
