Jeff Garcia is a solid NFL QB. But he has no arm strength and plays in a piss poor offense with a below average receiving corps, below average OLine, and a still questionable RB. Garcia should go undrafted in most leagues IMO as he has no fantasy value. He was a stud in SF and was a good play in Philly but that was because of the systems. He was an absolute dud in Det & Cle and I expect the same here (fantasywise).

2900 yds, 13 tds, 9 ints, 100 yds rush, 2 tds

I look at the Tampa Bay team and I see opportunities, especially at QB. Jeff Garcia has been soundly criticized since he left San Francisco. Even last year, as he turned the Eagles around, most pundits were slow to give him any credit. I believe that he is poised for another season similar to last year and can be had for a bargain basement price.

Tampa's QB play has been pathetic for the past three years. In 04, they had three different starters, Brian Griese, Brad Johnson, and Chris Simms. Griese was fairly effective, but only played 11 games. They passed as a team for 3076 yards and 21 TDs. In 05, they started with Griese and switched to Simms. Neither was very effective, yet they passed for 3323 yards, but slipped to 15 TDs. Then in 06, they chose Simms as the starter. He went down in game three and Gradkowski struggled all season long. Even Rattay outperformed Gradkowski. As a team they still passed for 3247 yards and 15 TDs. The potential for a solid passing in there for Gruden's system.

Let's consider the WRs for Tampa Bay. Galloway finished as the #5 and #15 WR in the past two seasons even with the pathetic QB play. He could surprise in 07. Clayton, Hilliard, and Stovall all return from last year so there is continuity with the WRs and I expect improvement as well.

Now, let's look at Garcia. He has a career 6.9 ypa and if he starts all year in Tampa, they have averaged 511 attempts per year for the past three seasons. I see another potential bargain late in the QB drafting.

Jeff Garcia 314 completions 520 attempts (60.3%) for 3588 yards 22 TDs and 16 ints and add 140 yards rushing and 1 TD

Bump...this is one of a handful of QBs that could surprise this year. He's really an ideal fit for what Jon Gruden likes: Veteran experience, Moblity, West Coast mastery. Arm strength in this case is overrated. But what's not overrated is the offensive line. The last few seasons the O-line has been a struggle in Tampa; can the changes this offseason lead to much improvement? Without them, Garcia could struggle much as he did in Cleveland and Detroit; versus Philly where the larget offensive line in the league resides.

He's an old quarterback going to a team that's much worse than the one he played for last season. Brian Westbrook doesn't play for the Bucs. Neither do LJ Smith and Reggie Brown. Plus the differences between the Tampa and Philly's offensive lines are like night and day. I just don' t see Jeff Garcia as much of a factor in fantasy football this season. I can't call him a bust because I never expected anything from him anyway.

You're probably better off drafting a player like Jason Campbell or JP Losman a little earlier than having to settle for Jeff Garcia.

I think that Garcia shone in Philly last year because he had many external factors working in his favor:

Familiar, pass-happy offense

Very good skill position players (Westbrook, Stallworth, Brown)

Very good OL

Unchallenged starter

I don't know that he will have any of these things in Tampa Bay except for familiarity with the offense. He struggled in his prior to stops (Cle, Det) when his surrounding cast was mediocre and it's looking the same way in Tampa. He's also not getting any younger and Simms will be breathing down his neck. I'm staying away.

His current ADP is QB28. That's not bad. I could live with him as my 3rd QB but I'd rather have Leftwich (WB27), Grossman (24) or Campbell (22).

Gruden likes older experienced QBs (Rich Gannon anyone) and knows what he is getting when he pursued Garcia this offseason. Garcia is a good QB in the west coast offense and can still put up good fantasy numbers when an offense plays to his strengths (like what happened last year with the Eagles). Gruden will use Garcia correctly unlike what happened to him when he was with the Lions and Browns. While I would not count on him as an every week starter I think that he could be a good starter in a QBBC approach. I think his numbers next year will be close to what McNair did last year.

3000 Yards

17 TDs

8 INT

100 Rush

Simms is a long-shot at best to make the team.
