Player Spotlight: Jeremy Shockey (1 Viewer)

Zoo York
2008 Player Spotlight Series

One of Footballguys best assets is our message board community. The Shark Pool is, in our view, the best place on the internet to discuss, debate and analyze all things fantasy football. In what's become an annual tradition, the Player Spotlight series is a key part of the preseason efforts. As many of you know, we consider the Player Spotlight threads the permanent record for analyzing the fantasy prospects of the player in question. Last year, we published more than 140 offensive spotlights covering the vast majority of expected skill position starters. This year will be no different.

Each week we will post a list of players to be discussed. Those threads will remain open for the entire preseason, and should be a central point to discussion expectations for the player in question. Importantly, analysis done in the first week of posting will be part of the permanent record in two ways. 1) At the end of the week, we will tally the projections into a consensus. 2) We will select a number of pull quotes from forum contributors who make a compelling statement or observation. Both the projections and pull quotes will be part of a published article on the main website.

Thread Topic: Jeremy Shockey, TE, New Orleans Saints

Player Page Link: Jeremy Shockey Player Page

Each article will include:

Detailed viewpoint from a Footballguys staff member

Highlighted member commentary from the message board threads
FBG Projections
Consensus Member ProjectionsThe Rules

In order for this thread to provide maximum value, we ask that you follow a few simple guidelines:

Focus commentary on the player in question, and your expectations for said player
Back up your expectations in whatever manner you deem appropriate; avoid posts that simply say "I hate him" or "He's the best"
To be included in the final synopsis and consensus outlook, you MUST provide projections for the playerProjections should include (at a minimum):

For QBs: Passing Yards, Passing TDs, Ints, Rush Yards, Rush TDs
For RBs: Rushes, Rushing Yards, Rush TDs, Receptions, Receiving Yards, Receiving TDs
For WRs & TEs: Receptions, Receiving Yards, Receiving TDsNow let's get on with the conversation! We look forward to your contributions and let me offer a personal thanks in anticipation of the great debate and analysis.

I thought it was a little odd to see him drinking screwdrivers up in a box during the superbowl and not on the sideline somewhere. Not sure if the rest of the team wants him there or not. but here's what I got.........

13 games played

56 catches

661 yard

5 TDs

He appears to be a great value play at first, but given he always gets nicked up and you basically can trust this putz about as far as you can throw him (and you'd think NY might finally smell the coffee and use Boss a lot more) - so he's probably going about where he should. Pairing him with another guy who won't cost too much eg Daniels or Watson or Olsen (etc) might be a great move, but I sure as hell don't want him as my TE1.

Now with the Saints I think Shockey's value should remain where it is or even go up a little going to a better offense.

Even though Brees has grown since his days in SD, and is in a completely new offense, we've seen what he can do with a capable TE (Gates). I'm not predicting Gates-like numbers, but I don't think he's going to take a hit by any means. Manning seemed to lean on his TE a bit as he was going through growing pains just as Brees did with Gates. Brees doesn't need the "TE crutch" anymore, but with Shockey's talent I see no reason he wouldn't post similar numbers to NY. Health is a major concern, so as long as he's on the field I can't see any reason he wouldn't post 58/630/6

Can I just say how happy I am to have intentionally waited until the final week of Spotlights before posting Shockey!

The Saints offense had a down year last year and became awfully one-dimensional after a great 2006. I think their production this coming year more closely matches that of 2006 rather than 2007 if they can avoid injuries, and Shockey will help that. In particular, the running game will be improved.

The Saints have a good FB who they like to have on the field, so operating on the assumption that Shockey will more or less be a fixture in the game as a good blocking TE, the person who figures to lose the most by Shockey's presence will be the 3rd and 4th WR's.

Shockey also figures to get the lion's share of the TE production, and if anything will eat into a little bit of Reggie Bush's receiving targets as well.

The irony, however, is this: by stealing from the only modestly productive receivers (outside of Bush) on the team, and improving the running game, Shockey doesn't really have a lot of opportunity to improve his own receiving numbers from what he was contributing in New York with the Giants. My initial impression is that he hauls in:

65/680/7

Projections of Henderson, Copper, Meachem and Bush all should drop a little, and the other TE's production should drop off to fantasy irrelevance.

BTW, I think the timing of this trade likely means that Shockey's ADP will be inflated higher than his end-of-year TE ranking. He may push guys like Heap and Cooley down a spot or two in some leagues while people hyperventilate about him being with Brees, making those players better bargains.

Shockey has had his best seasons when he's had good-great quarterback play. That's most likely the case with Drew Brees so I expect a top TE season from him.

Most of the top TEs this year have injury issues includeing Shockey. I think he's a great fit in NO where the undersized Drew Brees loves tall targets. It might not be 2008, but my gut says a monster season is in his future.

Let's not forget that Drew Brees knows how to make use of a great TE (see his earlier years with SD and Gates). I don't see Shockey's upside as high as Gates' numbers because there are more weapons on the NO offense, but the NO offense is also much more high octane, at least in terms of passing, than the SD offense ever was. That means that there should be more to go around. Outside of Colston and Bush, are there really any serious threats to keep Shockey's numbers down??? I don't think so.

70 catches, 800 yards, 9 TDs

If healthy all 16 which is a longshot. I see numbers similiar to what the two tight ends for the Saints put up last year. Eric Johnson and Miller put up 75 catches for 700 yards and 4 TDs. Think Shock's YPC will be a bit higher and he'll have a couple more TDs. So put me down for 75 catches 750 yards and 6 TDs.

Surprised there isn't more buzz on this one........do people really put him in league with the "top 4?"

On his career, Shockey has averaged over 11 yards per catch and about 51 yards per game.

I think a better QB will help his ypc and number of overall opportunities.

15 games, 120 targets, 72 catches, 864 yards (12 ypc), 7 TDs.

Last season, that would have put him at TE6 on a ppg basis. Shockey has a shot at passing Dallas Clark (11 TDs without Marvin around), Cooley (8 TDs is again attainable, but 5-6 is more likely), and Gates (due to injury). Crumpler, Heap, Scheffler and the overrated Vernon Davis have a shot at being in the top 5, but it's unlikely, IMO.

I see Shockey as top 4-5, behind Gonzo, Witten, and Winslow, but not too far behind those guys.

Do you all think Shockey can have a career year in NO? I have a feeling shockey will get like 70 rec for 850 yds and like 7tds.
