Player Spotlight: Ladell Betts (1 Viewer)

The lead Redskin RB in both 04 and 05 was Clinton Portis. In 06, Ladell Betts was the leading RB for the season as Portis missed several games with injuries. A closer look at 04 reveals that Portis had 343 carries for 1315 yards and 5 TDs with Betts running the ball 90 times for 371 and 1 TD. The percentage split in 04 was Portis 79.2% and 20.8%.

In 05, Portis had 352 carries for 1516 yards and 11 TDs while Betts had 89 for 338 and 1 TD. Percentage split in Portis' second season had him with 79.8% and Betts with 20.2%. Very similar to the previous year.

In the early games of 06, even as Portis was recovering from injury, he had 121 carries to 51 by Betts in the games that both played last year. That was a percentage split of 70.3% for Portis and 29.7% by Betts.

I drafted Portis in the second round last year and did not handcuff him because I wasn't sure whether I should take Duckett or Betts. I don't think the Redskins trusted Betts and that is why they grabbed Duckett, just in case. I know that there will be others out there that disagree, but I just don't think that Ladell Betts is the player that Portis is. I do think that he is (along with Turner) one of the top handcuffs this year as you know that if Portis goes down, Betts can perform. But, without that Portis injury, I see the Redskins returning to form from 04 and 05, with Betts possibly getting a slight increase in carries.

I'll nudge Betts up to 25% rather than the 20.5% he averaged in 04 and 05. I do not predict a Portis injury, but i do believe that the Redskin rushing game will produce this year regardless. Not sure if I will be able to afford the handcuff at the draft though.

Ladell Betts 108 carries for 464 yards (4.3 ypc) and 2 TDs with 30 catches 202 yards and 1 TD
