Player Spotlight: Larry Fitzgerald (1 Viewer)

2009 Player Spotlight Series

One of Footballguys best assets is our message board community. The Shark Pool is, in our view, the best place on the internet to discuss, debate and analyze all things fantasy football. In what's become an annual tradition, the Player Spotlight series is a key part of the preseason efforts. As many of you know, we consider the Player Spotlight threads the permanent record for analyzing the fantasy prospects of the player in question. Last year, we published more than 120 offensive spotlights covering the vast majority of expected skill position starters. This year will be no different.

Each week we will post a list of players to be discussed. Those threads will remain open for the entire preseason, and should be a central point to discussion expectations for the player in question. Importantly, analysis done in the first week of posting will be part of the permanent record in two ways. 1) At the end of the week, we will tally the projections into a consensus. 2) We will select a number of pull quotes from forum contributors who make a compelling statement or observation. Both the projections and pull quotes will be part of a published article on the main website.

Thread Topic: Larry Fitzgerald, WR, Arizona Cardinals

Player Page Link: Larry Fitzgerald Player Page

Each article will include:

Detailed viewpoint from a Footballguys staff member
Highlighted member commentary from the message board threads
FBG Projections
Consensus Member ProjectionsThe Rules

In order for this thread to provide maximum value, we ask that you follow a few simple guidelines:

Focus commentary on the player in question, and your expectations for said player
Back up your expectations in whatever manner you deem appropriate; avoid posts that simply say "I hate him" or "He's the best"
To be included in the final synopsis and consensus outlook, you MUST provide projections for the playerProjections should include (at a minimum):

For QBs: Passing Yards, Passing TDs, Ints, Rush Yards, Rush TDs
For RBs: Rushes, Rushing Yards, Rush TDs, Receptions, Receiving Yards, Receiving TDs
For WRs & TEs: Receptions, Receiving Yards, Receiving TDsNow let's get on with the conversation! We look forward to your contributions and let me offer a personal thanks in anticipation of the great debate and analysis.

Yup. Every season where he wasn't a rookie or hurt he's been a monster. Best wide receiver in the NFL. Best wide receiver in Fantasy Football. 100 catches 1400 yards 10 touchdowns. Just awesome.

Fitzgerald has everything you look for in an elite Wideout except blazing speed. He makes up for that by using his size and route running ability to get separation, and is one of the best redzone threats in the game. The ascent to number one was quick for Fitzgerald, and he is primed to be there for years to come.

100 rec - 1425 yds - 12 TDs

More of the same from Fitzgerald. Recs: 95Yds: 1375TDs: 11
Yep.Unfortunately, this will be the last year he'll be the #1 WR, so enjoy it.
Why, is Boldin going to stay healthy all year?
I'm guessing here but I think it's because someone doesn't have too much faith in Matt Leinart and they are assuning that Kurt is done after this year.
See I was thinking he meant that Calvin Johnson was ascending to the throne, but the Leinart thing works too...

He's too good. Guy has some seriously incredible hands. For those that say he doesn't have blazing speed, who cares. I saw him split the safeties in the Super Bowl and gallop for a TD that he made look easy. Guy is a complete stud.

I'll go against the grain here. As much as I love Fitzgerald and believe he is the best receiver in the league, I don't love him in fantasy football this year. And to be honest, I don't have a real concrete reason as to why.

-Haley gone

-I don't think Warner will last another 16 games.

-Superbowl losers - the recent evidence is too overwhelming for me to look the other way.

Because of his awesome 2008 season and amazing playoff run, he is going off the board as the number 1 receiver. IMO, his potential for decreased numbers doesn't have much to do with his skill but more so his supporting cast. Also, Beanie Wells plays in as a wildcard - I'm sure Whisenhunt would love to be able to run the ball more, so we'll see how that plays out.

85 catches, 1232 yards, 10 TDs

This is one of the few guys that really don't need a spotlight for because he is that good. He will be that good even if Warner goes down. He will very likely be in the top WR five again. Finished 2, 24, 5, and 1 the last four years. His 24 finihs was when he missed three games.

Larry Fitzgerald 150 targets 100 receptions 66.7% 14.5 ypc 1450 yds and 10 TDs

Was Fitz really the consensus number one last year? In my league he was second to AJ and we run a standard PPR.

Not much to say about him that everyone doesnt already know. One of the safest picks in fantasy football, and my #2 WR this year. I would like him better if Bolidin left, but that doesnt seem likely at this point.

95 Rec.

1375 yards

11 TD's

Who's your number 1 and do you play in PPR?
Disclaimer: I want to make this very clear. Correlation does not imply causation. Any of the trends or patterns I point out do not make it certain that they will happen. Let's not turn this into a correlation vs. causation debate. The information below is strictly for informational/entertainment purposes only. The only thing I feel strongly about is the tendencies of carryover in the different positions. The rest should be used cautiously. TOP 5 WR, BY YEAR (1pt/10yd, 6 pts TD) 2000 - (Randy)Moss, Harrison, Owens, (Rod)Smith, Bruce2001 - Harrison, Owens, Boston, (Rod)Smith, (Jimmy)Smith2002 - Harrison, Owens, Ward, Moulds, Toomer2003 - (Randy)Moss, Holt, Ocho Cinco, Harrison, Boldin2004 - Muhammed, Walker, Horn, Owens, Harrison2005 - (Steve)Smith, (Santana)Moss, Fitzgerald, Ocho Cinco, Galloway2006 - Harrison, Owens, Wayne, Ocho Cinco, Holt2007 - Moss, Owens, Edwards, Wayne, Fitzgerald2008 - Fitzgerald, (Andre)Johnson, (Calvin)Johnson, Jennings, WhiteCOMMENTARYThere was carryover of 3 players only once during this span (00-01), 2 players twice (01-02, 06-07), 1 player four times (02-03, 03-04, 05-06, 07-08) and zero players once (04-05). Given this sample, about half the time there will be only one player to return to the top 5. Harrison had an impressive streak of 5 seasons from 00-04 with the second longest streak being TO at 3 seasons. Harrison was the only player to repeat as top FF WR. Harrison was the only player to make it back in the top 5 after being the top FF WR the year prior and did it twice.Given the above analysis, who on earth can possibly see Fitz as the #1? You're insane. 1 guy, EVER, has been #1 2 years in a row. He had Peyton Manning chucking him the ball. Warner, while great, is NOT Manning. Boldin, Warner's age/health, Leinart's potentially bust factor, Wells, chance of being up a lot in their crappy division........all risks that say Fitz may not even be top 5. I have at least these guys ranked ahead of him in projections:Steve Smith (CAR)Marques ColstonDwayne BoweWith Moss, Wayne, Andre, Megatron, all possible to finish higher. FITZ has value in his consistency. Look, he's worth that top WR pick because his bust factor is low overall. If you don;t expect WR #1 production, you won't be disappointed.90 catches1100-1200 yards7-9 TDs

Andre Johnson is my #1. I think he goes for 106 Rec. 1600 and 12 TD's. 3 of my 9 leagues are PPR.

I'm going to play wet blanket just so the message board consensus doesn't end up saying 200 catches, for 2,000 yards and 28 TDs.

Much love to Fitz (how can you not [heart] a guy who runs a special camp for his fellow WRs?) but fantasy is more up and down than up and up and up.

90 catches, 1250 yards and 9 TDs

The second half of Fitz's schedule has a lot of extremely good match ups that he could post huge numbers, particularly in the playoffs.

Starting WK8 they see CAR, CHI, SEA, STL, TEN, MIN

Starting WK 14 they see SF, DET, STL

How much does this affect his draft value in PPR? I'm considering taking him 4th overall since I'm not fond of LT and Forte schedules for Wks 14 - 16. I do have Slaton as a 6th round keeper so I won't hurt terribly at RB.
