Zoo York
2007 Player Spotlight Series

Over the course of the offseason, we will be evaluating a multitude of players at every fantasy position. One such way we go about that is through the Player Spotlight series. Think of the Spotlights as a permanent record on some of the more intriguing players for the upcoming season. Each Spotlight will be featured in an article on the main website.

Thread Topic: Vernon Davis, TE, San Francisco 49ers

Player Page Link: Vernon Davis Player Page

Each article will include:

Detailed viewpoint from a Footballguys staff member
Highlighted member commentary from the message board threads
FBG Projections
Consensus Member ProjectionsThe Rules

In order for this thread to provide sustainable value, we ask that you follow a few simple guidelines:

Focus commentary on the player in question, and your expectations for said player
Back up your expectations in whatever manner you deem appropriate; avoid posts that simply say "I hate him" or "He's the best"
To be included in the final synopsis and consensus outlook, you MUST provide projections for the playerProjections should include (at a minimum):

For QBs: Passing Yards, Passing TDs, Ints, Rush Yards, Rush TDs
For RBs: Rushes, Rushing Yards, Rush TDs, Receptions, Receiving Yards, Receiving TDs
For WRs & TEs: Receptions, Receiving Yards, Receiving TDsBest of Luck and ENJOY!

55 Receptions, 700ish yards, 8 TDs

Adding DJax to the mix will be huge if he stays on the field. With a very strong running game and an improving QB, the future looks very bright for Davis. He, IMO, is the most physically gifted TE the NFL has ever seen and is now in a great situation also.

 I don't think that Alex Smith is going to progress quite as much as 49ers fans are hoping, but Vernon Davis is going to be the main target on that team.

I think Davis will put up top 5 TE #s this year. He will be Smith's main target but I will temper my #s a bit cuz Gore is still their main weapon.

70 rec, 900 yds, 6 tds

I think he'll be a top 3 TE this season. Only thing stopping everyone in FF land from having him on their radar is that he got hurt early during his rookie year and didn't get to show the improvement that will come this season.

80 rec, 1000 yards, 8 TD's.

He's gonna get fed that ball and Alex Smith will look for him in the redzone.

This is the boom or bust pick at TE I think this season. I think this is a VERY dangerous selection as many people are picking him top 5 in TE production this season. There is very little upside from there with this guy IMO, a guy who hasn't proven he can do it.

45 reception 680 yards and 5 td's

i just can't buy 70 - 80 receptions. he'd have to be targeted at least 160 times to get that total. has his hands improved that much in 1 offseason? hype is out of control on this dude. so far all i see is rickey dudley 2. i don't see him getting any looks on third downs, which will keep his totals modest.

46 650 14.1 5

Yes, he was out a bit last year, but looked confused at times, even at the end of season. I think he is a great physical talent but may not make the leap this year. I see 600-700 yards and 6TD.

Davis plays for a team with a horrendous passing offense (#29 in 2006), which is one thing that will limit his ability to produce big fantasy numbers. The other things are that his hands and his routes are not very good. Pretty much all he has is speed and size, which makes some folks salivate over him, but in reality will not be enough to lift him above the middle tier of TEs.

50 receptions, 600 yards, 4 TDs. Good for approximately TE#10.

(And I think that's being generous).

post of the thread . . .I have read in more than one place that he isn't very intelligent, and that explains the confusion . . . it may take another few years for him to reach elite level, if he even makes it to that level . . .

I thought I remembered something about him crying about not getting the ball after he came back from his injury last year, and then getting it in the following games. Not sure. I loves his potential though, and think he is in a great situation to be the #1 target in the passing game there even with Jackson.

Vernon Mamula I mean Davis is a moron. A big, fast moron, but a moron nontheless, and even talented morons don't have a great track record in the NFL.

I'd take a chance on him as a cheap TE2, no more.

50/650/5

Shows flashes, but doesn't develop into a fantasy stud as quickly as many people expect. The guy runs with the best of them, but he really needs to work on his concentration. He also needs an extra offseason working with the jugs machine.

Anyone who watched him last year noticed his stone hands and screw-ups running his routes at times. The guy is a physical freak, but I think it's fair to say he needs to apply that a LOT more before everyone annoints him as Gates jr. Tack onto that he has Alex Smith throwing him the ball and a pass anemic offense that features Frank Gore as it's running option and unless you expect him to be -the- passing game there's some good reasons to worry here.

58/640/4

Anyone posting over 6TD is making a huge leap. Only 6 TE over the last 2 years have hit 6 or more and in 04 only 8TE had 6 or more. Davis may become elite, it may even happen this year, but nothing has shown that's he going to make this huge leap yet.
