Last week, I was in tiny (pop. 7000), rural, economically disadvantaged Pahokee, Florida, and saw Edge, CJ, Devin Hester, Kendrick Mosely, JJ Arrington, and other NFLers play basketball in front of about 400 kids in a beat-up old gym. Tickets were $1 each -- the only press was local TV from Lakeland, Florida. There was nothing in it for these millionaires in hauling out to the middle of rural Florida except to inspire and show solidarity with a bunch of really underprivledged kids. Anquan Boldin, Pahokee native, organized the event. It was impressive. It even gave me warm feelings for Drew Rosenhaus, who was Master of Ceremonies.
Anyway, its worth saying that a lot of NFL players do work like this that is not wiedly covered by the press. From a fantasy perspective, its good to know who the solid citizens are -- CJ? really? -- as they are less likely to get suspended, moon the fans, etc. (BTW, Fred Taylor, who grew up in nearby Belle Glade, was a conspicuous no-show.)
