Some decency for the deceased should be shown. IMO it should be cancelled (give each team a tie) or at least play on Monday night.

Unlike the other 3 majors, whose seasons drag on and on and on ... and on ... the NFL has no wriggle room for "open dates", makeup games, etc

That being said, how can anyone have their total concentration tomorrow (if indeed played)?

I know they are professionals, but ...

Voted "reluctantly play." I think it depends upon how the event transpired. If Belcher shot himself in plain view of dozens of teammates, then perhaps a postponement is in order.

At least move the game to Monday... especially if the speculation this took place in front of some coaches and possibly teammates is true.

Even if it isn't... give them at least a day to process/grieve.

they can easily move the game to Mon or even Tue

... understood ... was referring to totally cancelling it ... there is no "TBD" date in the NFL

I would vote move to Monday. Though it's possible the Chiefs indicated a desire to play and if that is the case that should be respected.

I'm really not seeing the point of postponing.

This is a horrible tragedy. Particularly for this young woman and her family.

A lot of people, of course, are going to have a hard time processing this. But how much easier is it going to be on Monday or Tuesday? Is that extra day worth inconvenience for so many people? I just don't see how.

Why does the game have to played at all? Neither are even close to being playoff teams, and they could simply just be given a tie in the standings/history books.

Seriously, why not just cancel this thing?

I voted postpone, but in retrospect, is one day going to make people feel better about playing? Highly unlikely I think. In any business, there are going to be groups of people, depending on who he was really "close" to, that group or person is going to really have a difficult time with this. So no matter whether it is Monday or Friday, this game and probably the next several games are going to be very difficult for that person or group of people that he was really close to. Of course everyone is going to feel bad and be upset, I worked in an office with 500 employees, when we got an email that someone passed, if I knew the person or not I felt bad for them and their family, but could do my job. I had someone die in the group/department that I actually worked in, even though we were not best friend or anything, it still effected me much differently, I definitely lost focus on work.

Basically what I am saying is, they are not going to cancel their season, so most likely the NFL gives them until Monday or maybe they just make them play Sunday, but regardless, it is not going to make it easier for the guys Belcher was close to, healing takes a lot longer than 24 hours.

They will play, because its a "great story" in the making for the chiefs and the NFL never turned down a "great story". Heck I wouldn't be surprised if they made this a Sunday night game on the fly to try and get more people to watch.

No postponement yet in light of tragedy Brad Biggs

DECEMBER 01, 2012, 11:45 AM EST

The murder-suicide involving a Kansas City Chiefs player this morning has not postponed Sunday’s game with the Carolina Panthers at Arrowhead Stadium.

Not yet anyway.

Joe Person of the Charlotte Observer reports that interim Panthers general manager Brandon Beane said the NFL advised the club to travel to Kansas City as planned. The Panthers are schedule to depart at 1:15 EST, or in a little less than 90 minutes.

That doesn’t mean the game, scheduled for 1 p.m. EST, will not be pushed back. It’s possible it is moved to Monday night because of the tragedy involving the 25-year-old player. But no postponement has been made yet and at this point the Panthers are still scheduled to depart soon.

great story? the guy killed his GF

Note: I think it's a horrible and tragic story (hence the quotes). In the eyes of the NFL it has the makings of a "great story" especially if the chiefs win.

I think they should cancel the game, give the teams a tie, and give people time to grieve and process what happened. It's unlikely the NFL feels the same way. Lots of $ and sympathy on the line and they can create whatever narrative they want

I dont think he is saying great story as in uplifting or whatever just another angle that the NFL would use. And they certainly would use it.

I think the game should not be played or at least postponed but it does not matter what we think..the show must go on and will go on.

Presidents being killed or dying has not stopped the game, hurricanes, death and destruction have not stopped the game, muslim terrorists knocking down buildings and killing thousands have not stopped the game, and sadly this situation will not either.

The KC Chiefs and the NFL will offer up a minute of silence and the ball will be kicked off.

The show must go on
So you're saying that if he'd shown up and shot a teammate instead of his girlfriend that they'd still be playing this game?
what about if a meteorite hit the stadium?
C'mon. Really? Natural disasters move games... that's fine. He blasted his brains out in front of his coach and the GM. The game must go on? Why *must* it?
Because the NFL is above all else, a business. Once you think about the ticket sales and ad revenue lost by canceling the game you realize how unlikely that it will happen. Also, I don't think we should presume to know how these players want to grieve. Torrey Smith came out and had a fantastic game hours after his brother died. The distraction of the game might be exactly what they want.

There really are no "right" answers when it comes do dealing with death.I know I won't get uptight about whatever choice the league makes.

They postponed games after 9/11Pretty sure they didn't postpone the Redskins game after Sean Taylor was killed. I do remember they played the first play without a free safety. My guess is they play it tomorrow as scheduled.

If this happened in front of staff or players you absolutely postpone. I know 24 hours doesn't sound like much but the team has basically lost an entire day of prep today for tomorrow. Resume prep Sunday and play Monday night, which is precedent set for SD fire situation.

Those saying to cancel are being naive to the cold heart of the world which is run not with blood but straight cash.

SI.com writer Don Banks spoke to a league source who said the decision to have the Panthers fly to Kansas City today isn't that big of a deal."If the Panthers have to fly back from Kansas City without having played the game, it's not that big of an issue to deal with,'' the source told Banks. "We'd rather take the time to think through all the ramifications.''

The AFL also either postponed or cancelled their whole slate of games after Oswald killed Kennedy. As for hurricanes, the Saints were literally practicing in a parking lot. Our whole season was cancelled, they just moved it somewhere else.

This is a much smaller group. 55-60 players, staff of maybe 30 coaches, clerical, front office. Very close knit with spouses and SO's and it's possible many players knew the girlfriend/mother. The business is an emotion-based, unique atmosphere generally. And then there are the people actually involved. Crennel is supposed to have his head on straight tomorrow? He doesn't play he has to think and motivate, how's he supposed to do that after being involved and seeing what he saw today? And teams live out of the practice facility, not the stadium; it's not just tomorrow, it's all of today, no one's doing anything.Competitively, one team or another is at a disadvantage, etc. However, it's already been announced the Panthers are flying in this afternoon like usual. It sounds like they will play. There was a team meeting by the Chiefs and it's possible the league gave them the choice and maybe they voted to play. In situations like this sometimes people like to work, it helps.Minnesota had a Tuesday game if I remember correctly, they could even wait that long if they decide it's the best for everyone.

Yeah they played the game after Sean Taylor died. The Bills won 17-16 with 5 FGs and a safety. Joe Gibbs called back-to-back timeouts to ice Rian Lindell before a 51-yarder with just seconds on the clock, got a 15-yard penalty, and Lindell made the 36-yarder to win. I don't think I'd remember any of that if not for it being the Sean Taylor game. You are correct - they ran their first defensive play with only 10 players.Taylor's situation was a bit different though as he was an innocent victim, he didn't kill anyone else, didn't die potentially in front of players/coaches at the team facility. :(

Death is part of life. A close friend of mine died at my work (cancer) and guess what? They did not shut down. We did our jobs and mourned the loss.

Looks like the entire AFL schedule was postponed that week. Every team ended up playing a full 14 games so I don't think any games were actually canceled.

The NFL is not going to "cancel" the game. At the most I could see the NFL playing the game on Monday night.

If I was going on my gut with what will happen, I would say that the NFL will get input from the Chiefs, who will say that they want to go on and play the game as usual....much like the Redskins did with Taylor.

I think this game gets played at the normal time with a surreal feel and heavy hearts.

why can't they play a make-up game the same week as the wildcard round? Neither of these teams will be playing that week anyways.

Absurd to extend the regular season for a meaningless game though, right? Therefore, I say cancel it.

I think giving the Chiefs the option to move it back to Monday would be a good thing.

Some people might question whether a day will make much of a difference. I'd think definitely it can. No one is going to suddenly be over it entirely. But judging by my own reactions to losing someone close to me, my emotional state two days after was a lot better than it was just the day after when the shock is still lingering.

Not that I would expect any different. Call me cynical, but no one wants to lose the cash the game generates. It is truly sad that cash trumps everything, and I'm not naive enough to believe otherwise.

closest similar situation. The difference is that the Taylor shooting happened on Monday and he died on Tuesday, a full 5 days before the next game. It's a bit different for this to happen the day before - and especially for the face that the shooting occurred @ Arrowhead. That's got to factor in as well.

The hr guidelines of the nfl and kc business operations would probably allow anyone on the team to take an unpaid leave of absence to grieve. This includes the coaching staff. In theory the entire team could all independently choose to forfeit a game day check. If there were not enough players or coaches to field a team then KC would take an automatic loss of game. Wonder why this is not announced since the teammates would obviously all choose to honor their fallen comrade by choosing this route.

Edit: l meant that all the players and coaches probably have this as an option right now and would completely be justified in choosing this route.
