Playoffs? The Lions? (1 Viewer)

Mathew Stafford will go down as the Lions best draft pick ever... Yes this includes Barry and even Calvin.

Love this kid

Let's slow down a bit on the better than Barry talk.Even if they keep this up for 5 years it's gonna be hard to get over that GB hump as long as they have Rodgers. I don't see them getting any home playoff games for a while.Go Lions!

Yes, Playoffs. Yes, the Lions. You can say those two words in the same sentence. :banned:  :excited: :excited: :excited: :excited: :excited: :excited: :excited:
this is the greatest thread in the history of the time ive been here.
:goodposting: times gazillionWhen Santa dropped off the kids presents last night, I told him I'm good, already got everything I wanted. This is my 45th season being Lions fan. Outside of the 1991 rout of the Cowboys in the Divisional Playoff game, I can't think of a single game I enjoyed more than yesterday. I watched the game with several family members who are equally long suffering, including my uncle who attended the 1957 NFL Title Game at Tigers Stadium (Lions 59, Browns 14, tyvm).Long time coming. Such a great way to clinch a spot - playing the hottest team in the league in a game their opponent desperately needed to stay alive, they dominated from the opening snap - 46 yard bomb to Calvin.Love me some John Matthew. Stays healthy, he is easily the best Lion ever. Because if he stays healthy, this team will finally go to their first Super Bowl.

Lifer here. Let's not get too excited yet. They still only have won ONE playoff game in franchise history. They need to rest some guys next week, get healthy, and get ready for the wildcard game. After they win that game I'll be giddy.

Barry could be considered the GOAT, and Calvin could at least enter that discussion at least at his position. Stafford is not even close to that level yet. Stafford probably is the GOAT for a Lion QB, but historically the Lions having even a decent QB is rare. Prior to now you would have to consider Layne, Mitchell, and Landry as the best Lions QB of all-time. A pretty sorry list.

Don't tell Bobby Layne that. He might think those pre-Super Bowl era championships did not count.

They have to treat every game as the playoffs... Win every one of them ! ! ! No matter the opponent !Merry Christmas

Not sure in any other Lion fans feel the same, but when I was watching the game yesterday it seemed like I was watching another team other than the Lions...just hard to accept and process a Lion team doing so well.

Lifer here. Let's not get too excited yet.
After being a fan for about 40 years, seeing only one playoff win, seeing the worst decade in the history of sports, it made yesterday's game even better than it already was. It's hard to believe they were 0-16 only 3 years ago. This team making the playoffs and leaving the "same old Lions" talk behind them is a really big deal. Because of their history, making the playoffs already makes this season a huge success. Because of the history, especially the last decade, I think yesterday's game was the biggest and most important win for this franchise in more than 50 years. It was made even more so by the way they won. They dominated a red-hot Chargers' team from start to finish and not only made the playoffs, but kicked the door down and barged their way in. It was the most impressive win by the Lions that I can ever recall, including their one playoff win. The recent history is why. This was not just winning a game and not just making the playoffs...this was putting the worst decade in sports history in the past. It would have been disastrous if they would have lost this game. Hopefully they can build on it. I think they could be a very dangerous team that could make some noise. But regardless of what they do in the playoffs, this has been an exceptional year for this team. As far as not getting too excited yet, it's too late. I'm already beyond excited. :excited: :excited: :excited:

I don't know about everyone else on here. When Cliff Avril snagged that int out of the air, that Rivers tried to lob over the top, then ran in for the score. I probably sounded like a little girl, I was giggling and tears were flowing!

Such a great day to wake up and read about the playoff bound Detroit Lions.

Let's not forget what wild card teams have done in the playoff the last few years!

Probably the best SuperBowl era team the Lions have ever had. The biggest difference between this team and some of the teams in the 90's which had a pretty high-powered offense is this team has a solid defense as well and a much better QB. The thing that those teams had going for them were Barry Sanders.

Congrats Lions.

If Lions wind up #5, they're going to beat the NFC East champ in the playoffs.

If that happens it'll be onto Lambeau (assuming the Falcons at #6 don't upset the Saints)

Final Four??

Lions at Packers

Saints at Niners

just like fantasy championships, all you have to do is get in and anything can happen.

I'd give the offense of the 1995 team a pretty big edge overall. Obvs Stafford is world's apart from Mitchell, especially in the leadership department. Megatron is awesome, but the gap between him and Herman Moore is smaller than most people realize. Johnny Morton and Brett Perriman vs. Burleson/Young is total mismatch, large enough that I don't think Pettigrew is enough of an offset. Then you get to O-line and Barry, and you can just forget about it being close. Defense got exposed in the playoffs (lost in Philly 58-37 - for fifteen years, the record for highest combined scoring in a playoff game). The 1970 Lions team is probably the best defense of the Super Bowl era. Larry Hand, Alex Karras and Jerry Rush up front (too old to remember the 4th), Mike Lucci in the middle was, pro bowler Paul Naumoff on the weak side, can't remember if Weaver (#59) was with that team. DBs were awesome: Lem Barney and **** Lebeau had 16 interceptions, Mike Weger and Wayne Rassmussen were rock solid. Played man to man most of the time, they were that good. Shut out in the play-offs 5-0 (lowest scoring game in playoff history). This team is good, def a top ten all-time Lions squad. And they're not done yet, so they might move up. But right now I think you'd have to say the four NFL Championship teams, the 1991 team (record 12 wins, and lone playoff win in the last 54 seasons), and the two above are all better. Now let's see what happens next week and beyond.

The Championship teams were non-Super Bowl era, so I did exclude them. The 70's team were the best defensive teams the Lions had, but their offense was pretty poor. Conversely, the 90's teams could score points, but lacked a decent defense. This is the first time in my lifetime the Lions actually are solid on both sides of the ball. Team discipline and weaknesses in the offensive line are the only real weakness on this team. The 1991 team had Rodney Peete and Eric Krammer at QB, ouch. The 1995 team was really fun to watch. But both those teams were ultimately dominated in the playoffs. I guess we will see how this team does in the playoffs before making that call. This team looks like it might be putting its act together just in time for a decent playoff run. I am really hoping for that #5 seed.

Congratulations to the Lion fans that stuck through years of heartache, underachievement, and poor draft picks. Merry Christmas!

Now is not the time to debate Stafford v Sanders or match-ups in the second round of the postseason. Now is the time to bask in the glory of making the playoffs! Enjoy this moment and worry about that other stuff later.

Congrats again,

- Packer fans

Congrats. I targeted Stafford, Calvin, and Best and Lions D this year. With the help of Romo getting hurt, I am going to win 2 championships this year. I was an Oiler fan growing up, now that they are gone I jump on bandwagons, lots of times because of my fantasy players. I am on the Lion bandwagon this year, rooting for them in playoffs. Also rooting for Saints and Texans. I will probably be a Saints fan as long as Brees is there too. :drive:

So the only real question now is who do we have to petition to make sure the wild card game is played on Saturday and not Sunday? I would think many of us long-suffering Lions fans are going to need that Sunday to recover, win or lose.

It's been a great season and a lot of fun to watch. Going in I thought an 8-8 season would be a nice step in the right direction. The most exciting thing for me is the thought that this team could just be getting started. Merry Christmas, my fellow Lions fans, let's enjoy the ride! :banned:

Can't believe the job Kevin Smith has done since coming back. Hopefully he can stay long enough to win the big one.

Kevin Smith is the piece that the Lions have been missing on offense. When he is in there and healthy, he is the ideal back for this offense. I actually like him better than Best.

Congrats to the Lions and their fans. I do think they can make some noise if they dont have to many silly mistakes. This team can play with anyone when they dont beat themselves.

Quite a nice team the Lions have put together, and room to get better.

(I like the pieces in place, feel they'll grow better by a good amount to)

Defiantly the best all around team the Lions have fielded in this super

bowl era, Barry was a great back, but without a good QB you aint goin

nowhere, an Stafford is head n shoulders better then anything before.

Got some good stuff to build on Defense as well, as a fan I'm excited. :)

(yah been a fan and supporter for many many years, nice to see this)

I was born in Detroit and moved to Phoenix when I was 10 (I am now 45). So my whole life I have rooted for the Lions and Cardinals. It's been a tough road, but with the Cards having success a couple years ago, and now the Lions doing well, my football life has gotten much better. It is sooooo great to see the Lions doing well, and I wish I could go to a game. I told my wife that if they made it to the super bowl I was going. I have worn my Lions gear for 35 years out here in the desert, and it is so weird to finally have people give me kudos for wearing my Lions gear.

Go Lions :banned:

I am very excited for all the Lions' fans and the city of Detroit. I am also excited for your head coach, who in a very short time has completely turned the franchise momentum around.

As a fan of the NFL, I would absolutely be thrilled to see the Lions travel to San Francisco for a rematch!

yeah that would be a good sotry line.SFs front 7 is no joke.

Smith seems to be more of a complete RB than Best. Hopefully next year the Lions will have Smith and LaShoure healthy and be able to use Best as a third down back and try to keep him healthy. It is tough to come off your couch in mid-season and get 20 touches a game without pulling a muscle or getting some kind of sprain.

Congrats, Lions fans! I don't think of myself as a Lions fan, but they have always been one of the teams I've rooted for. I've been telling my neighbor (die hard Packer fan) since preseason that the Lions are on the come up, and while not as good as the Pack, were good enough to beat them any given Sunday. The drafting of Fairley to put next to Suh will be a very nice thing for this team, the addidion of the DEs have been a great compliment, and I agree with the above posters saying that Kevin Smith may have been the missing link to this offense and IMO could be an understatement. Calvin is the only player I could talk about as elite, and Stafford/Suh are very good, but Smith is the do-it-all RB that can make an offense click a la Thurman Thomas or Roger Craig if he can only stay healthy. NFC has some dangerous teams this year in the Pack, Saints, 9ers, Lions and Falcons. I think any of these teams could do what it takes to make it to the big dance and I'll be on the Detroit bandwagon until they are eliminated or play the Steelers.

This team is quickly becoming one team I cannot stand. From mocking Rob Ryan, to their loser coaching chasing Harbaugh to Suh's on-going dirty shenanigans. Enjoy your early exit.

That bad karma you're are carrying just might kiss your Cowboys goodnight Sunday.

I won't ask you about choking on a 24 point lead at home or Romo's interceptions that keyed the Lions comeback - had to have been painful. From one loyal fan to another (albeit on opposite sides), that had to hurt. But I would like to know how you felt at the time about Rob Ryan stating Megatron was the third best WR in that game (behind Dez and Miles). I love the 'boys wideouts, when healthy they can be as good as it gets. But my question for you is, how did you feel about Rob Ryan trash talking Calvin Johnson? Let's face, Calvin is never going to be an instigator or retorter in that scenario. Let's his play do the talking - and he his play was plenty loud in that win, with two touchdowns. Schwartz knows his superstar is never gonna use the needle. So out of all the things you listed, I gotta say his presser was pretty sweet.

ASIDE - to refresh memories...Week 4 Rob Ryan said CJ was talented, but would be the 3rd best WR if he played for Dallas. Schwartz post game "mocking" (as Bankerguy would style it) was:

“I'm glad the third-best wide receiver on the Cowboys is on our team,” Schwartz said.

Fair question.

I'm not a fan of our DC's mouth and his inability to back it up with our pathetic defense. However, I think it's just as bush league to respond to an idiot like Ryan like the Lions did. (Stafford shoving the ball in his shirt to make himself look fat like Ryan).

Detroit was owned for the majority of the game and I would love a re-match.

Honestly though....the Schwartz thing was what set me off the most (especially after the Lions mocking Ryan). The opposing coach shakes his hand too hard are the pansy Schwartz is ready for a slap fight. Mmmmmm Kay.

Edit-On the pain question. Yes, this has been probably the most painful season to watch as a Cowboy that I can remember. We should have won all of our games except the 2 Philly games. We've either choked or couldnt finish an opponent.

Edit 2...My late father was a Lion fan too. Might be part of my hate.

The Harbaugh incident was a head scratcher. And nobody liked the fact that the whole team seemed out of control mid-season (Suh being the most publicized). Detroiters like to think of themselves as blue collar salt of the earth types, and we don't really cotton to arrogant braggarts. On the other hand, being the #### of the walk is part of the reason Schwartz is where he is. This is a pretty mediocre franchise historically. This current team is only the 8th time we've won 10 or more regular season games - in 78 seasons. So while we hate undisciplined penalties, I think a lot of Lions fans are willing to give them a little rope on the bull#### if they prove they really have changed from a culture of losing.

I asked how you felt about Rob Ryan because I hate that kind of talk from my team's players or coaches. Blows up in your face too much. Puts the pressure on you and motivates the other side. Just take care of business, then celebrate. Hate guys who fire up the other side.

I really loved the way they conducted themselves the week of the Chargers game. Big emotional win out in Oakland (4th comeback from 13 or more), and they just went about their business. They weren't making called shots, nor were they tight. Just focused. They were up against the hottest team in the NFL and they simply walked out and blew them off the field from play one.

Long time Lions fans know they have already given us so much this year. You felt a lot of pride on Saturday. That is weird feeling for your average Lions fan.

I know Ryan started it (I get it). However, what the Lions did after in response .....is exactly what you say you hate. They showed a lack of class after they were extremely lucky to come back and win.I'm happy for Lions fans, I am. However, I'm no fan of this team or their coach once my team is done. I will root for the Packers or Saints to represent the NFC.

Well I don't give a rip who is coming on board the bandwagon. This is a long time coming, and I'm enjoying every moment.

The Lions are young and immature and they're far from a finished product. But they're a lot of fun to watch and they have a lot of fun doing what they do. I love the exuberance.

I'm a fan of football team. I don't expect them to be perfect human beings. It's nice when they are good people, Detroit has a history of Al Kaline - Steve Yzerman types who were the beau ideal in representing their city. I think on the whole they have a lot of good guys on this team. That they pissed a few people off a long the way, I think most fans get a kick out of it. We've been doormats for so long, we're sick of the pity. It's much more fun to be hated.

Cheers.

It's what makes football great. We all can't like the same team's. What fun would that be?Cheers right back at you.

Reminds this old Cubs fan of that 1984 season. Live it up while you can.

I'm curious as to how they play it out the last week. Rest your starters and risk going to the Superdome to play the Saints? Didn't work out so well when you played Drew and Co. during the regular season. Risking your starters in an attempt to play either the Giants or Cowboys seems like the right play.

Play your studs, beat the Matt Flynn-led Pack in GB and go into the playoffs with momentum.

(I try so hard to root for the Lions, but they are filled with the lowest bunch of thugs I've ever seen on a football field. FTR, the Tiger Green / Charles Martin mid-80's Forrest Gregg Packer teams were a very distant second)

I hope the cowboys beat the g-men & Detroit beats Green Bay this week. Would set up a great re-match in the Jerry Dome.
