He was promised e-mail access by an organization or two that backed out.  A more professional survey was going cost into the 4 digits.  While I'm sure the results will be skewed, I think he will be graded on the data analyzation techniques and presentation of results.  Besides, knowing the demographics should give some value to the results.

This is exactly it.  For the most part, for these research projects, you could write an excel sheet that random'd the answers for your "surveys".  All the professors care about is how you analyze/present the "findings".
