Points vs. H2H (1 Viewer)

I am playing another new league this year. The guys played together last year and played with a total points format. The guys liked it, claiming they did not want to be the victim of a bad beat. You know the one week Peyton throws for 5 TDs or Alexander runs for 5. I tried to explain to them that over the entire season H2H results typically in the most consistent team winning and this is usually the best team. But in a points league a team could catch fire the first month of the season and put up 100+, while everyone else is scoring in the 70s. Building a fairly big lead and over the remaining several months be either the worst team or average at best and still win the league. Could not convince them to change to H2H. Still want to crush them, so I agreed to play points. So with that, I have a question on how a points league may effect your draft strategy. With H2H you are trying to draft for consistency and while also paying attention to bye weeks and who a team plays during the fantasy playoffs. But this really does not have the same effect. Byes hurt you because you can not play a guy that week, but not as much if you were actually playing someone else. I have played points in baseball several years ago, but never football. Any info would help.

I saw you were online as I was reading this and tried to instant message you hopefully it works. I have been playing Points for over 15 years and can hopefully shed some light on it.......

An easy way to figure this is to calculate the records for each team as if they'd played every other team every week.

So in a 10-team league, your team "plays" nine games each week.

What you'll find is that a team's total head-to-head winning percentage can be 20% or more different from its winning percentage in the games actually scheduled each week.

i.e. it's a crapshoot because 16 games isn't long enough to favor the better teams.

Points rewards the best players.

All-play would actually be the better system if your goal is best system as opposed to more fun.

Total points gives no advantages at all for consistency. The distribution of your scoring from week-to-week becomes meaningless.

That is why more and more leagues are useing some sort of victory point systems. It combines head to head and points.

In it you get 2 points for a victory. 1 point for a tie, and 0 points for a lose. In a 12 team league the 4 teams scoreing the most points that week get 2 points. middle 4 teams in scoring get 1 point; and lowest scoring 4 teams gets 0 points. So between them you get between 0 and 4 points a week.
