Porter returns to Raiders after suspension reduced

Associated Press

ALAMEDA, Calif. -- Jerry Porter returned to the Oakland Raiders on Wednesday after the NFL Players Association dropped its appeal of the receiver's four-game suspension and the team reduced the punishment to two games.

The Raiders announced the settlement Wednesday and said coach Art Shell would address it later in the day. The team did not know if Porter would report to the team Wednesday. Phone messages left with the NFLPA and Porter's agent were not immediately returned.

The ultimate revenge the Raiders could get on him would be to video him when he's wearing his stupid t-shirts or acting out, and then posting it on their web site. Raiders fans would take care of the rest.

I think Raider fans are on Jerry Porters side in this ordeal.

I don't think they would be if they saw his behavior (as reported anyway) first hand.

I haven't been following the Porter saga too closely. What's the deal with the T-shirts?

Its hard NOT to side with Porter.

This whole team is in a mess.

They traded away a WR, then bench their reception leader from last year lol.

Raiders = horrid franchise

I'm too lazy to look for it but I posted in a prior Raiders thread in September IIRC that he had been spotted wearing a t-shirt around their practice facility that had an expetive on it that was directed towards the team or Shell or whatever. It was a radio report, but I think it was confirmed by someone.

It's mentioned in this article.

What are the Raiders trying to prove with the handling of Porter?

He's one of the more talented players on the team, yet they make no attempt to get him on the field. They demand a ridiculous amount in return for a trade that they know nobody will give.

What's the point?

Does anybody have any idea how this will eventually get straightened out?

Well then I'm revising my projections for this week to:0-0=0 yards and 0 TD's.

I have to think the Raiders will play Porter at some point this year. He's a free agent in my league. Gonna stash him away.

File a writ of habeas corpus? This is just getting stupid, they need to cut him or let him play, he didn't do anything bad enough to deserve all this.

They suck this year and are playing for nothing other than to build for the future. He's in the last year of the contract which they're on the hook for anyway. I think they're perfectly happy to let him sit and make an example of him as part of their building process, and let him go off in FA this coming offseason.

It's probably a good time to try to trade for him in dynasty, but I'd say he's next to valueless in redraft leagues.

I think fan perception may have changed since then.

Based upon what? And BTW, in the interests of full disclosure, do you own Porter in any of your leagues?

 I just read he's in the 2nd year of a 5 year contract. Do they have an early out or something?

Now that you say that, I think you're right. I just read something that referred to him being in the last year of his contract though. Let me look that up and get it straight. :loco:

Near the end of this article.

Yup, according to the NFLPA site, he's signed through 2009:

Salary History 2000 266000.00 2001 332500.00 2002 399000.00 2003 465500.00 2004 557000.00 2005 1000000.00 2006 1000000.00 2007 1000000.00 2008 1000000.00 2009 1000000.00LinkMy bad. :bag:

with the ascension of the Clippers this year, and some signs of life from the Arizona Cardinals...the Raiders are now officially the worst run sports franchise in the US.

their playcalling, coaching, and ownership are all stuck in the past and won't let go. i'm no fan of Porter, but if you want to "Just win, baby" you GOTTA play your receptions leader. you have to find a real QB. you have to hire a coach that's been on the sidelines sometime in the last 10 years.

ownership and coaching staff were trying to make an example out of Porter by being tough and stubborn. now they look like the fools they are. now don't get me wrong, i'd like to see the Raiders win because they're one of the local teams. but i absolutely hate the attitude of everybody associated with that team so they don't deserve it.

Probably a good idea. You know, no matter HOW much of a jackass Porter is (and he is a huge one), you'd think that eventually, he will realize that it will be good for his career if he put his tail between his legs and walked into Shell's office for a man-to-man chat. "Coach, I'm honestly sorry for being such a pain in your balls. If we can put this crap behind us and start from scratch, I'll do whatever you say to help make this team better."How hard would that be?

But then another problem arises from a fantasy perspective. The guy is a mega-tease. He has all the talent in the world, but you never know when he's going to show up. (Sound like another Raiders receiver you know?) The one game I didn't start Porter last year, he rapes Pacman Jones and the Titans to the tune of about 900 yards and 2 scores. Every other week, I started him and he was invisible.

Don't have Porter in any league, think the guy's a punk. However, the Raiders seem to be the worst run organization in the league, possibly in all pro sports. That seems to be in evidence just about every week. The fact that Porter is getting into fights with the coaches isn't necessarily a horrible thing anymore - perhaps he's partially right. Heck, Randy Moss basically said the team sucks and would like to be traded. At some point you have to hold Art Shell responsible for not putting one of the best offensive players on the field. He's the coach, if the team fails, he gets the blame, deserved or not.
