Portland: What to do? (1 Viewer)

Trip confirmed.  Coming with my son and taking him to Mt Hood after which time I will be solo.  I'd love to play some golf assuming courses are open so any suggestions are much appreciated.
Oh yeah, courses are generally open all year.  Try to get on at Pumpkin Ridge.

There's about 50 breweries in the city that are worth your time.  Widmer is not one of them, IMO.

Voodoo Donuts is dumb.  Unless you're a sugar junkie, want to stand in a long line listening to blaring hard rock and deal with surly donut pushers, I'd avoid.  You're not 7.

McMenamin's places are cool (there's a really cool one not too far from Pumpkin Ridge) and the food is mediocre.  But I'll go to my grave insisting that Hammerhead is one of the better microbrews around.  Certainly better than any of the drek pumped out from Widmer.

Going to Ava Gene tomorrow and Fogo de Chao tonight.  Will try to go to Screen Door tomorrow am and then OMSI before dropping my son off at ski camp.

Going to try to get a tee time at Pumpkin Ridge.

Officially leaving Chicago on 4/25.  Plan on taking the I 90 to the north, getting in to Portland on Friday.  Please leave all welcome baskets outside the front door.

Why in the hell would you eat at Fogo in Portland when we have a perfectly good one here in Chicago?

how was the trip, overall?
The trip was great other than I got a pretty nasty bug on Wednesday morning which limited my activities for the rest of the week.  Great city and nice people.

My son loved the ski camp and learned a lot so he will be going back for sure.

Got back from my trip to Portland this weekend. Had a great time. Really enjoyed exploring the city. It rained a lot.

Friday: Old Town, Frank's Noodle House

Saturday: Cherry Blossoms along the river, Saturday Market, Bijou Cafe, went to hike Angel's Rest but all of the rain made the hike very muddy, so we trekked over to Multnomah Falls via the historic Hwy 30 (it was closed to cars due to a recent mudslide, so it was a nice hike), saw a show at Revolution Hall, Old Town Pizza

Sunday: VooDoo Doughnuts, SE Wine Collective, NE Portland, E-San Thai

Loved it. Lots of homeless people. People in Portland are very nice and polite. It rained A LOT!!!

The wife, kids and I were in Portland 8/5-8/8.  Stayed at the Embassy Suites in Downtown.  We brought a heat wave with us.

Sunday

Lunch and beers at Lardo Hawthorne.  Had the Banh Mi sandwich, absolutely wonderful.  Had some of my daughter's grilled cheese that was great, but my son wouldn't share any of his cheeseburger.  Had some great hazies as well (it was awesome that HenHouse had an IPA on tap too).  They hit the spot on that hot a## afternoon.  I don't know if it's normal, but they had 12 taps outside attached to two trailers.  You needed to purchase tokens to try the beers.  I bought a few.  Sat next to some nice guys that bought too many, and gave the wife and I their extras.

Then, we went to Powell's.  My kids, especially our oldest (13), loved it.  She bought so many books.

After Powell's, we walked up to Blue Star Donut.  I had the maple bacon.  I was expecting greatness.  It was good, but not what I was expecting.  Later, I found out that the dough is supposed to be brioche-like.  We were all getting tired after walking in that heat (had to be mid-90's), so we went back to the hotel.  Made it back for the complimentary happy hour.  Had a couple of hazy pints, some Pepperidge Farm Goldfish, cucumbers, carrots and ranch, then headed up to the room.  Hung out in the room the rest of the night (hosted another family from our town that was in Portland at the same time).  No need to go out to dinner.

Monday

Ate at the hotel.  Full breakfast.

My buddy from college got us passes to go to the Nike Company Store in Beaverton, where we got the 40% discount.  My son (10) absolutely loved it.  He tried on a ton of shoes, walked up and down every aisle.  He ended up getting some Lebron XIIs, some shirts and shorts.  The entire bill for my whole family was $964, $578.40 with the discount.  OUCH.  Other people there had way more than we did.  I can only imagine how much they spent.

Went to Beaverton Sub Station for lunch.  Decent subs.

Headed to Washington Park for the afternoon.  Rode the shuttle, walked around the rose garden.

Went to Wizbangbar which is in the Pine Street Market (it's a food hall), they don't serve booze, but instead offer Salt & Straw ice cream.

We did the Embassy Suites happy hour again.  Then, went to 10 Barrel for dinner, got a table up on the roof deck.  Got the kids some pizzas, and a brussel sprouts app for the wife and I.  Before we left, I ordered some Wings from Pok Pok NW, left the family at 10 Barrel to pick up the wings, picked up the family (bought a 6-pack of Joe IPA at 10 Barrel), and then headed back to the hotel.  Put the kids to bed, got busy with the wife... after we ate the wings of course.  Man! do they stink, but tasted delicious.

Tuesday

Hotel breakfast

Went to Multnomah Falls.  We were able to go on the bridge (I think it's called the Benson Bridge), but couldn't hike up to the top of the falls due to fire damage to the trail.  We were going to go to McMenamin's Edgefield for lunch, but we weren't hungry yet, so we got a recommendation for a place in Vancouver, WA to visit and eat lunch, Frenchman's Bar.  It was a cool place to hang out, but a horrible recommendation for lunch.  It's regional park with a beach area on the Columbia River, no concessions.  We stayed for an hour, let the kids wade in the water, headed back to Portland.

Met my buddy - that got us into Nike - for an afternoon drink at Deschutes Brew Co.  The wife and I did a beer flight, shared a wonderful crab roll, and fed the kids something.  My buddy works for a liquor distributor, and one of the distributor's offerings was on the menu.  It's the Black Butte Whiskey.  I guess they distill the whiskey in the barrels that Deschutes uses to make their Black Butte Porter.  The three adults shared two flights of whiskey that included the Black Butte Whiskey and two other whiskeys.  Good times everybody!!!  Spent a couple of hours there, then headed back towards the hotel.

We had some ramen at Afuri, and then finally went to Voodoo for dessert.

Wednesday

Hotel breakfast.

Then we drove to Sunriver.  If you want to know about there, let me know.

I was going to say on your next trip come on down to Central Oregon for the real deal.  ;)   But you did.  Hope you loved it.

Bend / Sunriver is one of my favorite places. Definitely on the list to retire to.
Unfortunately Bend's infrastructure and city planning are a fiasco, but most people put up with it because of the natural beauty/things to do/weather in this area.

I'm coming from Seattle which is also not great in the planning department.

The wife and I are starting to make annual weekends to Portland.  We just love it.  Went to Tillamook/De Garde brewery.  The drive was beautiful.

Blue Star is so overrated.  I mean so is Voodoo, but their base donut is so much better.  Pine St. Biscuits is where it's at for breakfast though. This is the first time we didn't go to Tasty and Alder.  Also the first time we didn't go to Powell's and I missed it.

I was gonna say, it ain't like the rest of Oregon is earning high marks for city planning...
Gotta love what they are doing with the I-5 bridge that crosses the Columbia

I don't follow it too closely since it's other side of the state but every time I read about it, it sounds like a cluster.
