Possible 2009 destinations for Edgerrin James? (1 Viewer)

So, as I was researching for an actual reason as to why Edgerrin James fell off the face of the Earth (with the Earth being the top two spots on the Arizona Cardinals RB depth chart), I learned that there is a very good chance that they may cut him this off-season. Not that that should surprise anyone, but if you didn't really know about what happened with him and the team (he doesn't fit the offense), then it came as a slight surprise. Although, I guess we should have expected this. He used to be a great running back, and can certainly still play, but I'm sure something about him being a mortal lock to rush for 2 1/2 - 3 yards on every carry had something to do with the whole ordeal.

Okay, sorry -- that entire paragraph was entirely unnecessary -- but anyway, let's brainstorm some possible 2009 locations for Edge, shall we? No? Does anyone even care about him anymore? Here's what I came up with, and I tried to think outside of the box:

Cleveland - The Browns appear to like the slow but steady wins the race type running backs. Jamal Lewis isn't getting any younger, and would benefit from a solid spell RB such as Edge. Heck, even Edge would benefit from that because that's probably what he's become now: A solid spell/3rd down RB.

Cincinnati - If thinking Cedric Benson won't rush for 100 yards in the majority of the Bengals' upcoming games is wrong, than I don't want to be right.

Washington - Unless I'm in the minority here, I don't think the Redskins signed Shaun Alexander with plans for him to be a long-term (or even short-term!) solution.

Detroit - You can plug pretty much anybody who'll be a free agent this off-season and just say that the Lions need help at the <insert applicable position here>. It's like Mad-Libs! But seriously, it's up in the air on whether or not Rudi Johnson will be back next year for the Cowardly Lions.

That's about all I could realistically come up with. I suppose you could throw New England into the mix, since they apparently have no qualms about the limit of running backs on their depth chart/roster.

Let the predictions begin!

If he's even remotely bright....the golf course. He might be an adequate COP/backup for many teams, but he isn't a lead back any more, and he's been too good for too long to go out like that.

Edge is clearly an 'all about the money' type dude, or he would have stayed in Indy at a reduced price to be part of a winnerI doubt he'll go to Cleveland and be happy backing up Jamal Lewis, who he will more than likely feel he's better than, at a reduced price and I also seriously doubt he'd sign with Washington or any other team as a backup or change of pace back at this point in his career, based on all that he's done thusfar

Why would the Browns want him? They already have a 30 something RB, who is better than James at this point in their careers. I can see the Browns drafting a guy like Moreno, Wells, Spiller, James to replace Lewis in a year or 2.

Might he follow Dominic Rhodes lead and go back to Indy? Of course, Edge might be one of those guys with too much pride to be a backup(or get paid close to the league minimum.)

If I had to make a guess, I'd guess this is his final NFL season.

A backup in Indy is possible, but I expect him to head into retirement vs. a back up job.

He's perhaps a league average backup RB at this point. Maybe. It was a nice career, but I thought Emmitt showed more at the end in AZ than Edge has the last 1.5 years.

Colts will take him back in a heart beat. 3rd down back for sure and if Adaii goes down again he's gold.

Well then, I'll ask again.....
I'd say Edge is a borderline HOF player. I'd vote him in ahead of a guy like Bettis, but not ahead of a guy like Martin, and both those guys will take a backseat to Faulk and Emmitt. So if Edge does make it, I think he'll be waiting a while and for some reason, if skill position guys don't make it in right away they rarely make it at all, with Monk being an exception and I wouldn't have put him in either.

I haven't been watching cardinals games but it seems premature to say james is done. He's had a 3.5 ypc average this year. Sure, that's down from previous years but it is also .1 yards better than Hightower who has averaged 3.4 ypc. James averaged 3.4 his first year at Arizona. Edge has more carries than Hightower. Their yards per catch is similar (Edge is at 7.3 and Hightower at 8.1). The main place they differ is in TDs. Hightower has 7 to James' 3. Looking at the numbers from the past several years the YPC numbers for Cardinal running backs is pretty poor.

Tim Hightowers numbers for ypc are going to be low since he was used mostly at goal line situations where getting even one yard is hard. Everyone keeps going to the ypc, but check out the scenarios. You will see that Tim's ypc will definatly go up now that hes getting the touches without always facing a goal line defense.
