Possible knee surgery for Schilens (1 Viewer)

Coach Tom Cable indicated Monday that Chaz Schilens may need to undergo surgery to repair a knee injury.

The knee problem developed due to Schilens' overcompensating for the foot injury that has plagued him since last summer. Cable suggested that Schilens could return for the opener if it turns out to be just a scope, but that's overly optimistic. It's time to take Schilens off redraft cheat sheets. He won't help the Raiders early in the season. Louis Murphy, though, enters the picture as the late-round flier of choice in Oakland.

Even if he doesn't get the operation, how well will that injured foot hold up if he starts shifting his weight to compensate for the knee? My guess is he'll be gimpy all season and/or end up on IR.

So what can we expect from Louis Murphy now in terms of projections for the season, with Chaz possibly out for a while?

Old information but something to keep in mind, I wrote Shilens off long ago when I read this

Doing a bit of research, very little, it seems the severity and type of fracture matters quite a bit on this injury.

But I found this on BBC.com, a list of English athletes that had broken feet, and their recovery time:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/health_and...ess/4283136.stm

RECOVERY TIMES

Michael Owen (2006): Fifth metatarsal - predicted 6-8 weeks returned 17 weeks later

Wayne Rooney (2004): Fifth metatarsal - predicted 8 weeks returned 14 weeks later

David Beckham (2002): Second metatarsal - predicted 6 weeks returned 7 weeks later

Gary Neville (2002): Fifth metatarsal - predicted 6-8 weeks returned 21 weeks later

Ashley Cole (2005): Fifth metatarsal - predicted 6-8 weeks returned 12 weeks later

Scott Parker (2004): Second metatarsal - predicted 8 weeks returned 34 weeks later

Danny Murphy (2002): Second metatarsal - predicted 6 weeks returned 21 weeks later

Steven Gerrard (2004): Fifth metatarsal - predicted 6-8 weeks returned 10 weeks later

RECOVERY

It all depends on the damage and which metatarsal bone is involved. It is impossible to put a timescale on recovery from a stress injury.

After initial rest, the training techniques or body mechanics may need minor tweaking or a major haul to avoid a repeat injury.

With an impact fracture, after the plaster and protective boot is not needed (usually after 4-6 weeks), it will be a case of exercise and increasing weight-bearing activities.

Ice packs, strapping and even the use of oxygen tents can be used to assist recovery.

Full return to action can be anything from another four weeks and upwards - depending on the extent of initial damage. Young bones heal quicker.

One factor that also helps is if the broken bone is one of the three inner metatarsals. As was the case with Rooney.

This means that the fourth metatarsal is aided by the 'splint effect' of the bones on either side.

Preston's David Nugent broke his fifth metatarsal in March 2006 and returned to action after being sidelined for just six weeks.

His remedy? Drink plenty of milk.

Keyser Soze 2.0

Who is Chaz Shilens? He is supposed to be Turkish. Some say his father was German. Nobody believed he was real. Nobody ever saw him or knew anybody that ever worked directly for him, but to hear Kobayashi tell it, anybody could have worked for Shilens. You never knew. That was his power. The greatest trick the Devil ever pulled was convincing the world he didn't exist. And like that, poof. He's gone.

Ya-all are jumping to conclusions here. For all we know, it gets a scope cleanup and he could be back for week #1. Consider him fantasy irrelevant if you like. That's probably true. But he may come back and provide some valuable possesion receiver help.

Zack Miller gets another bump. He could be a top 5 TE this year as the team's only decent receiving option.

Miller will be top 5 TE anyway. Consider Cooley's production with Jason Campbell and Campbells general affinity with the TE position. If you want to bump anyone, bump Murphy way up. Ford could also emerge as a Santana Moss clone, but he is still raw.ETA: If Chaz is indeed done for the year, I'd project Murphy to get 60/1000/7
