Possible New Job (1 Viewer)

Expecting an offer on a new job in the next day or so. I've had 6 interviews and things look promising.

Problem is... I'm not as "excited" about it as I was hoping I'd be. I think it's because it would be a bit out of my comfort zone.

Current position is as a "consultant" but it's basically an open ended contract... could be here as long as I want. It's about as laid back a "job" as I have ever had (evidenced by the time I spend at FBG). No pressure. No more than 40 hrs per week.

New position pays more, has more responsibility, would be managing a staff of 9 people (all out of state) and likely more (some local) in the near future. High expectations for performance/results. High likelihood of long work hours.

I realize I'm being a #####... but tell me why... fear of change?

In the words of Peyton Manning "trust yergut." How is the missus? Obviously they all want more money but has she started plans for it yet or is this something you are pursuing?

You're afraid of leaving a nice, secure place to go to a place where you may fail and wind up panhandling for change in 6-12 months.

Money motivates me more than anything else, typically.

Are you still hungry? Or are you fat and happy?

If you're fat and happy, then stick with what makes you happy.

If you want to climb up the chain a few more rungs financially, learn to be happy and go for it. I never buy into the stuff people say about doing what you love over making money personally. Making more money allows me to do the recreational things I love more (travel, etc).

Obviously, that's not the same for every one. If it will change your comfort of living significantly for the more money, go for it, I'd say and enjoy the extra cash with a nicer vacation or car.

6 interviews? Wow..I have never had more than 3, nor interviewed a potential candidate more than 3 times. Were a couple just casual get to know you types of interviews? Or all intense?

The last one with the CTIO was intense. The others were my boss, 2 guys at my bosses level and 2 guys at my level... not that intense. They all seem to love it. The CTIO maybe a little too much :D

Anyone ever manage people remotely before? Seems like a challenge.
If they're good at their job, you won't need to do much management. I've never worked from an office before so I know from experience.

If they aren't, you'll find out VERY quickly and either: A. manage them more closely or B. terminate them

Yeah, this is one of the reasons they want me in there. The remote employees are not doing well.

First order of business would be to check their phones and see how many message board and fantasy sport apps are on it. Delete those and usually production will rise.

you'll have to pry it from my cold dead hands.

Or maybe I can just invite them here... at least that way I know what they're doing...

Do you guys run Microsoft on your work computers?

Make sure everyone uses "Office Communicator"

Sell it as a tool to stay in touch more quickly - you can video conference and send files more easily internally.

And here's the benefit for management...when someone is idle (away from computer) for more than 15 minutes it shows that.

When you see someone consistently idle throughout the work day, there's a good chance they aren't doing much work. It's like a screen saver popping up because the mouse hasn't moved in 15 minutes. Granted it's not fool proof and there's guys lying around on their office couches using a crutch to reach up and move the mouse every 15 mins.

It sucks, but it works. I always know the guys who are around working late because I'm the first guy on the morning with a "Green Circle" next to my name and the last one to sign off. Granted I do surf FBGs throughout the day every 30 minutes or so, but I'm always at my desk, taking calls, answering emails, etc.

Significantly more money and opportunity?

I'm in a similar comfortable position where I might be able to get a little more money, but it wouldn't be worth leaving the comfort.

20% bump plus possible bonus. Way more opportunity in that it will be a perm position vs the contract position I'm in now, plus the ability to manage (which I can't do currently) and also stay technical, but I wouldn't aspire to take my future boss' job.

20% is kinda in that range where I feel I'd have to give strong consideration...

Also, WTF is with 6 interviews?

That is crazy!

Funny thing is, NOT ONE technical interview. I could have fabricated my whole resume.

ETA: to clarify, if it makes a difference, 4 of those 6 interviews were over the phone as the interviewers were all over the country.

You can change your idle time in communicator. Mine is currently set to 60 minutes. #RemoteEmployeeProblems

ETA: Office Talk app on droid allows me to sign in to communicator when I'm no where near the computer #3HourLunch

Would switching jobs decrease your retirement age or lifestyle enough to justify?
Age, probably. Lifestyle, not for the better at least.
I'm way too far away from retirement to have that impact any decision, but by 50 I would presume that would be a major influencer...

If the impact on lifestyle was anywhere above mild/moderate, I'd have to do some serious calculations on how much time I'm shaving off of retirement.

We use a VPN to be able to sign on.

Do you?

This might change everything.

Yes we do

If you love your current job, then no. If you're bored, then yes.

If the new job reduces the potential for nooners, then hell no!
Don't love my current job, I am at times bored, it's not at all challenging. But, it's easy and convenient and the people I work with/for are good people.

One other thing... being a consultant, I am not currently able to work from home, which sucks. But the ability to do so occasionally with the new job will likely be outweighed by the need to travel on occasion. Travel would, at least, be to California and Texas.

Neither job has nooner potential :kicksrock:

Weighing all the pros and cons, I say....

New Job!

The company I work for does several rounds for external hires. For any technical position, the last round is usually 5 interviews for an hour each. Internal hires have to do basically the same.

From what I can tell, it wouldn't take long before the new job seems easy to you Kee. I wouldn't doubt your ability to do it.

But if you are questioning the increased responsibility then you might want to consider more WHY you'd want the new job.

Thanks GBAD!

I want the new job because 1) it's more money and 2) I know it's what I should do. My current position is/was really just a stop-gap to get me to my next position after my previous company went out of business.

Guess I'm just a worrier :D

Look at it this way. If the 6 people that interviewed you think that you can either do the job or learn how to, and it's their job to determine such things, then you probably actually can do the job.
