Post your interesting music trivia here (1 Viewer)

Many of the works published by Felix Mendelssohn were actually written by his sister. Due to social norms of the time, it wouldn't have been appropriate for a woman to write and publish music.

Victor Willis, lead singer for Village People, was married to.....

Steely Dan really wasn't named after a sex toy- the band had a roadie named Dan who preferred his Chardonnay unoaked..

The Phil Collins song "Calling in the Air Tonight" is about Collins watching his wife drown.
I don't think that's right, it was someone else's wife and she wasn't drowning, she was attacked by an army of fire ants and then he saw the fire ants in the crowd at a show 5 years later and recognized them as the same fire ants that attacked someone's wife.

Ran across this one a couple months ago regarding the origins of the title 'Sweet Home Alabama'

Seems like 'mobile homes' are actually named after the city they were invented in, James Sweet being the manufacturer. Sweet's Homes had a radio jingle they used in advertising.

Lynyrd Skynyrd incorporated that jingle into their song.

Per Snopes ( http://www.snopes.com/lost/mobile.asp ):

'The 1974 Lynyrd Skynyrd hit 'Sweet Home Alabama' was a reworking of the 1951 radio jingle 'Sweet's Homes, Alabama'"

"Don't You (Forget About Me) was originally offered to Billy Idol and then to Bryan Ferry (from Roxy Music) to perform, but both declined. Keith Forsey, who with Steve Chiff wrote "Don't You (Forget About Me), also wrote "Shakedown" for Beverly Hills Cop II and the title song to Flashdance... What a Feeling. Forsey had just become drummer of The Psychedelic Furs and produced their album Mirror Moves, which led to another John Hughes connection: Hughes found out about The Psychedelic Furs when he used "Don't You (Forget About Me)" in The Breakfast Club and discovered that Forsey wrote it. The next year, he used their song "Pretty In Pink" as the title to his next movie, which gave The Furs a huge career boost. Forsey was a big fan of Simple Minds, so he tried to get them to perform the song, which they did at the insistence of their record company.

Steely Dan: original drummer was...

Chevy Chase
Walter Becker and Donald Fagen were asked about this in an interview.

Phil: Is it true that Chevy Chase was once a drummer with Steely Dan?

Walter: No that's not true.

Donald: We went to college with Chevy and before we ever thought of the idea of Steely Dan we used to do pick up dates with Chevy on drums. He was a very good drummer. He was also one of the funniest drummers.

Donald: He maybe wasn't THE funniest drummer but one of the funniest.

OK, then he played drums with the two founding members of Steely Dan before the 'Steely Dan' line up was solidified.

Tom Petty joined the Traveling Wilburys because a night that George Harrison, Jeff Lynne, Roy Orbison were going to record a B-side for a Harrison record, "Harrison had left his guitar at Petty's house and Harrison went to get it and Petty came back with him."

Van Morrison was one of the founding members of The Traveling Wilburys but dropped out prior to recording a studio album due to creative differences with Roy Orbison

British singer Tony Burrows had 3 top ten hits in 3 months with 3 different groups:

"Love Grows (Where my Rosemary Goes)" -Feb. 1970 -Edison Lighthouse

"My Baby Loves Lovin'" - March 1970 - White Plains

"Gimme Dat Ding" - April 1970 - The Pipkins
