I used to bet on point spreads in the NFL all of the time back in the 90's. Anyone who bets on NFL games is bound to have some stories of games that you got lucky as hell to win, as well as games where you were very unlucky and lost. I thought it would be fun to see everyone post their stories.

Here are mine:

3 luckiest:

-SD @ KC (-3 1/2) on a Monday night in the mid 90's. I had the Chiefs minus the 3 1/2. The Chargers are winning the entire game, but with a little over a minute left, and trailing 23-16, Steve Bono somehow takes the Chiefs down the field for the tying score. The games to overtime. In OT, the Chargers get the ball first and are driving for the win, when Stan Humphries gets injured. The drive stalls. The Chargers then punt the ball to Tamarick Vanover, who takes it to the distance for the winning score. KC wins 29-23. And I win the bet.

-Buff (-6 1/2) @ NJY the season where the Jets went 1-15. For some reason, I took the Jets and the points. I think the trends were all pointing their way. So, it is in the 4th quarter and the Bills are up 28-13. It is not looking good. The Jets make it 28-20, and then get the ball back with almost no time left. With seconds left, they throw a Hail Mary, which Wayne Chrebet catches at the 5. He then barely dives into the end zone for the TD! They miss the two-point conversion and lose 28-26, but I win the bet.

-Mia @ SD (-2) in an divisional round playoff game following the '94 season. The O/U is 45. I take Miami and the points, the under, AND also parlay Miami and the under. The Dolphins are up 21-6 at the half. I am praying for a low scoring second half. The Chargers get a safety early in the 3rd quarter to make it 21-8. They eventually take the lead late in the game 22-21, but Marino drives the Dolphins down into position for a possible winning FG. If Stoyanovich hits it, the Dolphins win, but the game goes over the total and I lose money on the day. He missed the kick. 22-21 final and I win all three bets! What was even luckier was the only reason I took Miami and the under was because it was the last game of the weekend and the first three games had all gone over with the favorites winning and covering. I put my money on the due factor and it paid off.

3 unluckiest:

-Det @ Was in a pick 'em game in '95 . I took the Lions on the road. I ignored the trend that said the Lions never win outside, not to mention my brother Tim telling me all week what a foolish bet it was. However, the Lions are leading late 30-27, but the Redskins hit a long FG at the buzzer to tie the game. In OT, Scott Mitchell throws a horrible INT inside his own 10, which is easily returned for the winning score. Redskins win 36-30. And I lose.

-Rams @ NO (-3 1/2) in '94, I think. I have the Saints minus the points. They kick the Rams ### the whole game and are leading by 24. The Rams then score the last 21 points of the game, 7 of which off a punt that hit at the back of the end zone and everyone thought was dead, but then the Rams returned grabbed it and ran it back all the way. 37-34 final. I lose.

And I saved the best, or should I say the worst, for last.

-Pitt @ Jax (-3 1/2) in the famous Monday nighter. I am sure most remember this game. I have the Steelers and the points. They are trailing 23-21 with seconds to go, but are about to attempt a FG for the win. I actually turn to my brother Tim and say, "This is great. If he makes it, I win. If he misses, I win. The only way I can lose is if Jacksonville blocks it and returns it for a touchdown." I think we all know what happened next. That was the last NFL game I ever bet.

I was in Vegas on my annual trip for this game. We went downtown to the Golden Nugget. We were flying out a couple of hours after the MNF game. The Nugget sportsbook was about even Steelers and Jags fans. It was a really fun game to watch because of that. Lots of trash talking on both sides. I bet Pitt +3.5 and Pitt ML +180.If Pitt misses the FG, I make a couple of bucks. If Pitt makes the FG, I win quite a bit and turn a small loss on the trip to a nice sized profit. The kick is blocked and bounces off to the left. It must have bounced 5 times before a Jag picked it up. This is the game where they showed Cowher almost coming off the sideline ala Woody Hayes and decking the Jag with the ball. I often wondered if Cowher had tackled him, what would they have done? The game was over. Obviously suspension to Cowher but would they award the Jags a TD? I dont think so. I believe someone had come off the sideline to make a tackle many years ago on a breakaway runner and it was just a penalty. It wouldnt have affected who won the game so would they have left the score 22-21?

One of the best I ever had was the Buffalo comeback from 35-3 in the playoffs against Houston. I had Buffalo -2.5 in that game.

I am not sure what they would have done in that situation.

I had Buffalo -3 1/2. Nothing like getting my hopes up and then yanking them away again.

Did they ever take more than a 3 pt lead in that game?

Luckiest win was Seattle vs. someone (can't even remember) in the mid-90s. Had Seattle +6.5 to complete a three team parlay I had already won the first two legs of. Hundreds on the line. Seattle is down something like 21-6 with 2 minutes left. They end up scoring a TD with about a minute and change to go and 2 timeouts left to cut it to 21-13. They squib kick it and end up pinning the opponent back at around the 15 yard line. Two runs, two timeouts. There are less than 45 seconds left. Opponent runs again, then lets the play clock run all the way out and takes the delay of game, stopping the game clock with about :05 left. I'm resigned to losing. They bring the punt team out and snap the ball, but rather than kicking it, the punter holds it for a couple of seconds to allow the clock to get to 0:00 and then steps out the back of the end zone. Safety for Seattle and they lose 21-15, giving me the cover by .5 points. My buddy had the same parlay - we went nuts after that, hugging and celebrating. It was the closest to gay sex I ever got.

I dont even remember what year (just looked it up, 1994 I believe) but it was many years ago. I had Minnesota at home over Chicago at like -3.5 The Bears are killing the Vikes at the half. I am over my buddies house reviewing his Tax information. He rarely bets but went in on this game with me. His end was $100. The Vikings make a great comeback and tie the game right before the end of regulation. My buddy is going nuts and wondering why I'm not. Well, being an experienced bettor I knew it was unlikely that Minnesota would win by more than 3 in OT. Well, Minnesota was around midfield and threw an out to Cris Carter down the right sideline. I believe the DBack went down and Carter turned it up but he was off balance. He had to tightrope the sideline. I swear he was going to fall out of bounds at least 3 times. He made it to the endzone. We went nuts.

late 90s. Broncos vs Bungles.

Bungles are 10 point dogs to the Terrel Davis/Elway Broncos and the Broncos are up by 8 or 9 with under a minute to go. Game is all but over. Cinci cant possibly win. Jeff Blake drops back to pass...fumble/sack picked up and returned for a TD. Broncos win by 15+ and cover. Anything other than defensive TD and I win. ugh! Kills me that it was completely meaningless to anyone outside the betting community. The Broncos had won the game. If they got teh ball back they would have jiust kneeled down.

2 Unlucky bets I can think of off hand

Few years ago, Monday night Titans v Chiefs. I had teased the Titans to I think +10-10.5. Last minute of the game, Chiefs up by 7 Titans have the ball in their own territroy. I am covering the spread. If they go on to score, OT happens I get the win. BUT, I think it was a screen pass that Eddie George? fumbles in the last 30 seconds, Chiefs pick up the ball and retun it for a TD. The only thing that could have happende for me to lose, happened.

This year Chargers at Bills I have Chargers -6. Last few minutes of the game, Bolts up by 10. Losman throws an INT to Clinto Hart who starts to run and FUMBLES. Bills recover and get a first down. Go on to score a meaningless TD in the last 30 second nd final score 24-21, I don' t cover the spread. Not only do I lose, but my Bolts obviously learn nothing about trying to return INTs as shown by what nhappens in the playoffs this year.

:bye: The Chargers did that twice this year? :lmao: That has to be a knife through the heart of every Chargers fan.
