Post Your unpopular opinions (3 Viewers)

True libertarianism is a myth. You always have to somewhat subjectively draw a line where one person's rights stop and their neighbors' rights start.

-Libs believe that human nature is inherently evil, cons believe it to be inherently good
Could you elaborate? I've never considered this, but as soon as I read it, it just "felt" backwards. My gut tells me it's the other way around, but maybe I need to think about it more.
Based on the premise that conservatives believe that social services can be supplied in sufficient quantity via private charitable contributions, whereas libs believe that funding must be seized by government (force) and redistributed.
Seized? Nice choice of words there. Conservatives believe that the world is made up of parasites trying to suck the money out of the hard working man and itsa tool for teh rich. Also that the government is a lap dog for anyone to the left of their position.Left of the political spectrum it is believed that the world is made up of those who see the world differently than the one monolithic viewpoint - and this does not make them wrong. Language, art and even modern American culture itself has been saturated with ideology. They also believe that their fellow man has value the same as he has value, he believes that rights are not just for the privileged and wealthy, but all man - and yes, that also includes the man who he disagrees with.
Is the word "seized" inaccurate in some way?Your third paragraph is a load of crap. If anything, it's conservatives who believe in equality. That nearly everyone has the innate ability to achieve through their own effort and hard work, and should have the right to make that choice for themselves. It's the libs who believe that a certain subset of the population is inferior, and must be provided with a crutch to achieve even a modest existence. And that those who do achieve must be reviled and punished if they don't "give back" in sufficient quantity.*this isn't in the 'unpopular' thread for nothing, guy.

What the Fred Phelps chirch does isn't freedom of speech it's harassment. If they want to have a public march, it's one thing, but intentiaonally disrupting funerals is quite different. The family and friends have the freedom of speech (and religion) to express their grief over their loss and Phelps' tactics represent an infringement of that right. For that reason, Phelps group should be arrested.

I'm failing to see how this is an unpopular opinion.Do you think this board is Phelps' congregation posting under 300 aliases?

While most people detest him, they write it off as free speech. I'm saying that his tactics cross the line of free speech and are actually harassment and possible grounds for his incarceration.

This has turned into the "Strangely Attractive Women" thread where people started posting names like Adriana Lima because one person said that her eyes were too far apart. First several pages were pretty good, though.

The government should take no action with the intent of influencing the behavior of individuals or corporations with the only exceptions towards actions that violate criminal law or when dealing with those who cannot consent (minors, mentally incapable peoples).

Consequences: no regulating or licensing of property, no subsidies, no tax benefits or write-offs, etc.

Note: laws that are not designed to ensure health and well-being of citizens would be invalidated as a result of such an amendment.

Examples of laws that would be unaffected: murder, assault, rape, harassment, stalking, theft, trespass, etc.

Examples of laws that would be invalidated: gambling, prostitution, drug use, discrimination, etc.

If something along these lines were passed, I would also support a concurrent amendment strengthening criminal and civil punishments. It's about personal responsibility: you may do as you wish, unless you violate a law intended to safeguard life/liberty/etc., at which point you will accept the now-more-severe consequences of breaking the law.

It's too generalized. I'd say non-evangelical cons believe in inherent goodness of humanity. But Bible-believers believe humanity is inherently evil and needs redemption. I'd think it'd be the same on the lib side of politics. That's part of the reason our society is so screwed up, I think. We've encouraged people to self-actualize and do what feels right - when our selves and feelings are completely depraved. Sorry for the tangent. Now back to your regularly scheduled entertaining thread.

Sushi sucks.

The Princess Bride is not funny.

White tennis shoes with jeans is a horrible look.

Siena Miller isn't all that.

Miller High Life in bottles is a top 5 beer.

If you use the term "black ice" you are a collosal moron.

On The Road and Confederacy of Dunces are hugely overrated.

That "she likes pina coladas" song is a good tune.

Reality TV is awesome.

When Harry Met Sally is a great movie. So is Four Weddings and a Funeral.

People who say "our dogs are our kids" need their faces punched.

Mashed potatoes are better without gravy.

I find the the FFT code shtick funny.

Wal Mart is a decent place to shop.

Christo makes a lot of sense around here.

Poland Springs tastes better than other bottled waters. Maybe the container is higher quality and the water tastes less plasticky, I don't know. But I can absolutely tell which is which with the label ripped off the bottle.

Fancy pens are a complete waste of money.

I guess I kind of appreciate that there are people who buy their own reusable grocery bag and cart it around with them, but they still look like huge dorks.

High definition isn't really all that game changing. It's nice, but you didn't need it until you saw it. (Although if you don't have a big high definition TV, don't have people over for football, and definitely don't have a Superbowl party.)

Downloading music without paying for it should be illegal, but recording it off the radio or sharing a mix tape/CD with a friend should be completely legal, just like it's always been.

Dog racing should be illegal, not carved out as an exemption in the gambling laws.

Driving with a .08 BAC should not be a crime. Neither should driving with a cell phone, or driving without your seat belt.

What about a BAC of over .08?

...

Sure, although the edge pieces are vastly superior to the sucky middle pieces. And yes I have a baker's edge brownie pan.
I had to google it, and that is so cool!!!!!
It's really a brilliant invention. I was wondering if it could be used for baked macaroni and cheese or lasagna, where the edge pieces are also way better than the interior.
I want one of those. There is almost no food that the center, uncooked, gooey part is better than the crunchy border.

In the later seasons of 'Roseanne' Sara Gilbert aka 'Darlene' was freakin hot.

I'm ready to debate.

Fruit sucks (especially watermelon). I'd rather go hungry than eat it.

Minor League Baseball, including summer college and independent baseball, is more fun and entertaining than MLB.

You only need to poop once a day.

Reggae/Ska is only enjoyable on a beach during the summer.

Soy milk is better in coffee than cream or regular milk.

You should never have to use the air conditioner in a convertible unless it's raining outside. If it's hot enough to need it, the top should be down. I just shake my head when I see a convertible driving by me on a beautiful day with the top up.

The shark move is to use the air AND have the top down. Best of both worlds.

I like it when people blast their music with the car windows open. I'm always curious to listen in to what they're rockin' to.

I think the world needs more of this.

Rumor has it that Poland Springs factories are at the bottom of a series of lakes up in Maine and that the springs are at the top. People drive boats and swim in them (I have been.) The water actually tastes a little better when you get some in your mouth when you wipe out while swimming or water skiing and such.
