I have a friend who went back to school at a later age. The kids liked him, wanted him to go out, and kept inviting him to functions. He finally replied, "We're not going to get stoned and listen to Moondance, are we?"

Most Americans are dull, sheeplike, lazy, uninformed, unrefined sacks of #### who consume mass quantities of whatever mediocre crap corporate America sells them, whether it's movies, music, food, political candidates, or household goods. The bar just keeps getting lower, and frankly it's embarrassing.

 
No Country For Old Men is an all-time worst movie and is only liked by people who think it makes them look smart for knowing the "hidden meaning." :X

Not the same, plus a gay person can conceal it when it is advantageous. There is a long history of discrimination against them and there are certainly millions of people that think no gays allowed establishments would be acceptable.

Agree 100%. I can even buy that they were a better band than Nirvana.

But I don't think scene politics really come into it. Nirvana had a debut single that struck a chord with the public, Mudhoney didn't (I don't even think "Suck You Dry" is that good at all). That's pretty much the whole story.

Maybe Nirvana's glossy production came into play too. Who knows. But the correlation between which bands are good and which hit it big is pretty weak.

I think you're right, now that I think about what you've said. The politics came after they hit it big. It was something to talk about, and was kind of new for mainstream America. Good point.

Popular, unpopular...whatever. It's true.

 
Metallica sucks.

Really, they suck. A couple of their songs are o.k. (One and Enter Sandman come to mind) but they have no special talent for music.

James Hetfield could pretty much be any guy off the street. He can't sing, his metal growl-singing (or whatever you call it) is nothing special. His lyrics are juvenile.

Kirk Hammett is excellent in terms of playing ability but there's a million guys out there like him. He plays fast and accurately but that's about it.

Lars Ulrich is alright as a drummer but he's also an arrogant ###.

I don't know anything about their bassists.

Last night I started watching the Some Kind of Monster documentary. I love music documentaries and people have said you don't have to like Metallica to enjoy it. Well I turned it off after about 30mins. During the recording of the song "Some Kind of Monster" it was pretty obvious their producer (Bob Rock) was practically writing the song for them. It was like a bunch of 15 year olds being taught what to do.

Marginally better than Spinal Tap

I loved Metallica while growing up and have been to see them a handful of times. They put on a great show, but I haven't kept up with them in over 10 years. I still listen to some of their old stuff. I've always been a big fan. :shrug:

 
Metallica was more about the triumph of a style of music than specific musical abilities (They are solid, though). They were the first wildly popular thrash metal/unapologetically metal band.

I'll defend Led Zep for a minute too. They borrowed a lot of stuff and maybe didn't give proper credit sometimes and they are, perhaps, vastly overrated, but, most modern music is not that original and borrows from the music that came before it. Those Blues guys that Zep copied, borrowed stuff from their predecessors too. Zep did play the blues well and gave a unique spin on it, as well as incorporating other influences.

Metallica kind of lost me after the whole Napster douchebaggery. Just seemed like a bunch of hypocrites. They basically died to me after And Justice for All.

Not to sidetrack too much but the argument they made on napster was that they didn't have control of their property. A song that wasn't even released to the public was being downloaded for free. They weren't even making a big deal about their existing music initially. They put their work in and made a song only for it to basically be stolen and given away by someone else before they could show it to the world.

I used to be mad as hell at them too but as I got older and understood the argument, I side with them more now.

Lars is still a dooche though.

Yes.

Furthermore, while there's evidence that Zepp stole songs without paying royalties, this isn't a bad blues band that just ripped off Muddy Waters. They're a singular rock band with a sound that had never been heard before.

I don't know anyone in Metallica, and for all I know, they're all complete jerks. But I can't help but notice that the public turned on Metallica because Metallica didn't want their music to be downloaded for free. What, the band should welcome that kind of illegal downloading as a good thing?

 
If you can't pull your car up close enough to an ATM to use it without opening your door, you should have to drive to the back of the line and start over. Three screwups and you have to use the walk-up.

 
I think March Madness should construct itself more like the Champions League -- minus the group stage -- and I don't care if it's not as fair.
