Poverty Level (1 Viewer)

You think $70,000 is living in poverty?
For a family of four? Hell yes.
I wouldn't make statements like this if you want to be taken seriously.
In an area like NYC, I'd say the poverty level is prob around $35kish for a family of 4, so roughly 50% higher than the rest of the country.

Your taxes are prob low, IDK what they would be at that level, but we can call it 20% for sake of this scenario.

That gives you $2,333 a month.

$900 on rent - This puts you in a 2BR in a very shady neighborhood.

$600 food

$240 - This covers two metrocards, if you need 4 then you're ####ed

$80 - electric

$50 - internet

$100 - family phone plan

This would leave an NYC family living in piss poor conditions, with a balance of $363 a month for miscellaneous things. Insurance is a different conversation.
lol @ $600 a month for food. Not if they are eating healthy. More like double that.
Actually it is possible, even eating fairly healthy, you have to prepare everything from scratch though and your options are limited. You are looking at a lot of pasta, potatoes and eggs. Probably only apples and bananas for fruit.

I'll never forget the time Whole Foods ran out of live Maine lobster. My blood ran cold immediately and things got foggy after that, but my next recollection is telling my wife I got snow crab legs. She asked if they were previously frozen, and I just nodded. It was the most ashamed I've ever felt in my life. Somehow we got through dinner, and I just held my wife as she sobbed.

Yeah eating a lot of pasta isn't great for you. You could eat a lot of chicken, eggs, apples, bananas, and lots of veggies. Drink water only. Still going to be more than $600/month imo though.

I remember that day... Sad day to be an American :kicksrock:

They wouldnt have an option to spend any more so it can be made to work.

Yeah most people would eat poorly anyway but the cheaper diets people are eating isn't helping.

What do you mean by cheaper? Processed foods or limited options like I mentioned?

Yeah processed foods mostly but lots of pasta and potatoes are not exactly good for you. Plus it's tough to prepare food from scratch all the time when both parents are working full time. I've had this talk with my mom because she complains my wife and I don't cook enough. I work on average 60 hours a week and my wife works 40 plus is on call at home 4 nights a week. We don't have the same amount of time my mom had as a stay at home mom.

I'm not complaining either just explaining why. We are extremely fortunate to have the jobs we have and we're nowhere near the poverty level. I can't imagine trying to raise a family on even 50k/yr though.

I've been to a lot of third world countries, the poor people there that are fat are bloated due to malnutrition. In the U.S. it's because they are eating too many quarter pounders.

Eating quarter pounders will leave you malnourished too
Well played. :bowtie:
Many obese people are suffering from nutrient deficiency. All the salt, fat and carbs will make you a disgusting pile of mush who's body is still actually starving.

I was agreeing with you just then. :oldunsure:

It's not the same as starving, but it's also a salient point.

I know you were agreeing. I was explaining it so those fat bloated rhinos stuffing themselves with burgers and watching reality TV will understand.

If thy arent too lazy to click a mouse and come here.

I know it's anecdotal but this really hits home for me. I made many bad choices as a kid and then a young man. I matured later than some in life, dealt with issues lots of kids don't have to, and have had my fair share of battles with addiction that left me homeless and broke. I pulled my life together (with lots of help) and now own my home, provide for my family, and live a life many people dream about. The turn around in my life has a lot to do with getting a good paying job. If I had never had the opportunity to work my way out of my situation my life most likely would have turned out differently.

This is exactly what I am going through too.

Great story, shows that despite the odds people can make it, but what does it have to do with the poverty level?

Sorry I got off topic but less people would be in poverty here if there were more better paying jobs.

10% Flat tax across the board (corporate too) + dignified wage act = less people in poverty. You'd be surprised what a good paying job will do for people's self esteem.

At first blush I think this combination would be pretty likely to actually increase poverty. At a minimum it would make poverty even more tightly bound to the business cycle than it is today.

I'm assuming by dignified wage act you mean something like a big increase in the minimum wage, if not I'd have to rethink it.

Obviously. How do we create more quality jobs?

The education system needs to be more in tune with the evolution of our career opportunities. I feel like there is little guidance and little harmony. The only message I hear is, "go to college." We need to be more specific. We also need more alternative pathways. Being 18 and being able to solve a system of equations, discuss the social and historical significance of Chaucer or apply Hess's Law are not the end all and be all of education. They do nothing to improve the future outlook for a significant portion of the population.

Paid training provided by the government would help. If you told people you would pay them $15/hr to learn how to weld and that would put them in a great position to land a $25/hr job you'd have a line out the door.

The figure that was posted in the OP said there are 48 million people living in poverty. I'd think they put the cut off at 27k annually. That's a ridiculously low figure. Not sure where it needs to be but good chance we have close to 100 million people living in poverty in this country. We're doing something wrong.

Business should be good when everybody has discretionary funds no?
It's not as simple as that. What you are suggesting would likely create runaway inflation.
Yes inflation is a likely byproduct. Just print more money. I mean some economist have been predicting out of control inflation for a while. Yet inflation has been relatively mild and we keep printing money.

Yah, its gotta be a quarter pounder with cheese to get your dairy!

Let's end poverty.

Every 5 years we kill the richest person in the country and spread their money equally amongst every tax payer (or I guess just take all their money and assets and make them poor, I SUPPOSE they dont HAVE to die...............but if they are killed this would be a little more effective).

This works two fold. One, that's a hell of a lot of money to spread around, so everyone gets enough for some groceries a few times probably.

Also, this would kill some off the big time greed, and people won't be striving to be super duper rich anymore. The amount of money the richest people have will dwindle pretty quick after this cycles a few times, spreading more money out among us peeps. Higher wages, more donations.....................
