Do you guys go into the draft with a strategy, such as targeting guys who get lots of targets early and often ? Do you also have a strategy of going by position , like WR / WR / RB / RB / WR / TE / QB ? Or do you just stick it the BPA approach ? Last year I waited until rd 4 for RB ( Rice ) and round 8 for QB ( Schaub ) and it paid off. I'm not sure if it was luck or a good strategy. I went something like this:

12 team PPR redraft

AJ

Wayne

Welker

Rice

Thomas

Daniels ( hurt after monster start ) then picked up Carlson and Zack Miller and played matchups

Lynch (yuck )

Schaub

Is this a good strategy, or was luck in my favor because Ray Rice blew up ? I had no depth at RB and was always picking last in my ww due to best record from beginning. Thoughts on all of this ?

I try to use the strategy of targeting guys who get lots of targets but I also try to incoprorate BPA approach too if that makes any sense. I keep going back and forth on taking a QB early (in league all TDs are 6pts) or wait. Ideally taking a QB early for me is 3rd round but every draft is different. Guys in my league begin drafting QBs mid to late 1st and by end of 2nd round at least 7-8 QBs will be off the board. I'm in a PPR league BTW.

Last year I took Brees in early 2nd round because no one had taken a QB yet (I had the 10th pick of a 12 man draft). I took Brees knowing QBs were gonna come flying off the board so my strategy was have those guys push value down to me in the 3rd. No tellign how the draft will flow this year for sure. We've got 4 new guys coming in so like in the draft every year I try to be flexible and not take anything for granted and take the BPA. But I do expect QBs again to fly off the board this year.

I think alot depends on league structure, roster size, whether it's a dynasty, etc.

PPR definetely makes WR's very valuable...but if I'm doing a re-draft league, I still value RB's very highly.

If it's a dynasty league though, I try to get as many WR's as possible in PPR.

I agree. PPR makes WRs valuable but I still can't help but lean more toward drafting those pass catching RBs. TEs can make an impact too as Dallas Clark really pushed my team over the top to winning my first championship last year.

In a PPR league, I've never been able to stay competitive without at least one solid RB on my roster who gives me decent numbers. If you agree with this, waiting to the 4th round to draft your first RB a big gamble (in my humble opinion).

You got lucky last year with Ray Rice.

All red-drafts are pretty much luck. Every year the guy that got some late round RB that nobody predicted wins typically.

I much prefer dynasty, as being able to predicted talented players over many transactions and decisions will eventually lead to the better owners rising to the top. Sometimes bad or lucky owners will be fine for a while, but if you've ever played in the same league for 5 years or more, it's evident that some people are much better at it.

i agree its mostly luck.....but there are more guys i like than others and im not afraid to reach

i also got Rice last year, but it was like round 8, he was my #4 rb, and i actually liked him going into the draft and was gonna take him way earlier

my new approach is my first 3 picks get a stud rb, stud wr and stud qb.....there is sooo much value at qb in the 3rd+ rds so my first 2 picks will always be wr/rb or rb/wr

it also depends where u pick....in our redraft we pick based off last years standings....so i usually always pick in the last 3-4 because i make the playoffs every year and boy i love those spots (12 teamer)

this year im at the 9 spot, im eye'n up Moss than maybe S-Jax because i know the ppl who pick behind me are not high on him ever...than hopefully Romo in the 3rd

I agree with the luck and the "stud philosophy" with positions that people traditionally wait on. Value-based drafting will get you into the play-offs in redraft nearly every year but in a single week, head-to-head contest you didn't want to have Zach Miller last year when you were squared off against the guy with Dallas Clarke.

I draft in a 3 keeper PPR league and the most highly targeted players in the 1st are usually RBs or WR. Then 2nd and 3rd rds are QBs or TEs but guys like P. Manning, Brady, Brees, etc usually go late 1st early second. Everyone keeps a pass catching RB such as Chris Johnson or MJD so if you want to get the premium guys you need to make a trade and give up a lot.

If find it useful to chart at least the first two rounds of your draft, making picks as you go as if you were making the pick for your team each time. This way, I can rank those guys that are in the range of my picks and I am rarely caught off guard on draft day in those crucial early rounds.

I always go for stud over position in the first two rounds. Propertly balanced PPR leagues (I play 10-team, 0.5 PPR w/2 RB, 3 WR) will allow you to do that.

Most years I look for a RB that will get 60+ catches in the first round but this year I may change my strategy. 100 catch WR's and WR depth in general is down. I may even go WR/WR this year but I have not finalized my projections and strategies.
